Key Aspects of Adolescents’ Environmental Attitudes with a View to Transformative Education

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to gauge the environmental attitudes of adolescents in order to improve environmental education plans. To this end, the Attitudes Towards the Environment validated survey was applied to 346 adolescents (51% boys and 49% girls, mean age = 15.05) at secondary schools in Cordoba (Spain). A factor analysis (FA) was carried out using the FACTOR program, obtaining three factors: emotional, cognitive, and behavioral. The results of the FA exhibit excellent internal consistency, with an Omega coefficient of 0.916 and Cronbach’s Alpha of 0.915, and adequate goodness of fit. The emotional factor results are good, as concern and responsibility towards the environment were notable. However, this did not translate into motivation to obtain further knowledge or to become involved in collective civic actions. The findings in this line give us information to review educational objectives and methodologies, for which emotional education is essential. Elements are proposed to encourage adolescents to adopt more proenvironmental attitudes so that the development of environmental awareness and concern in them is not undermined by frustration, and so that peer learning is present through dialogue and cooperative work, promoting an affinity for nature and the motivation to participate in collective civic activities

Installation of groups of stone columns in clay: 3D Coupled Eulerian Lagrangian analyses

    Get PDF
This paper describes the results of three-dimensional (3D) finite element analyses investigating the installation effects of groups of stone columns in purely cohesive soils. Installation of stone columns is simplified to the insertion of rigid cylindrical elements with conical tips in a single homogeneous soil layer (Tresca plasticity and a quasi-incompressible elastic law). Installation of a single column is simulated as the reference case and the installations of two columns and a group of nine columns are considered to study the interaction between the installation of several columns and the influence of the installation sequence. The process is simulated using a Coupled Eulerian Lagrangian formulation. Stone column installation alters the surrounding soil and the numerical results show the increase in horizontal stresses and pore pressures. The installation effects of several columns at common spacings overlap between each other and accumulate, producing higher horizontal stresses and pore pressures in a larger area. The installation sequence is mainly visible around the last column installed, where the radial stresses are lower

Improvement of the critical speed in high-speed ballasted railway tracks with stone columns: A numerical study on critical length

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT: The pressure to achieve a higher speed of train operation has increased in the last few years due to the development of high-speed railway lines. In the presence of soft soils, this speed increase is not possible without undertaking soil improvement measures, since the critical speed is lower than the desired speed of train operation. One of the most widely used soil improvement techniques is that of stone columns. In relation to these is the concept of critical length which, up to now, has only been studied for static cases. This research focuses, for the first time, on the enhancement of the critical speed in high-speed railways with stone columns and with special reference to critical length. Moreover, others parameters such as: maximum rail displacement and Dynamic Amplification Factor (DAF) are also studied. Analysing three profiles of ground representative of soft soils, it can be observed how the effect of the stone columns on critical speed is relevant, showing that critical length is different with respect to the three parameters above, the most restrictive one being that which corresponds to the critical speed. The influence of other parameters on the critical length and on the effectiveness of stone columns, such as the area replacement ratio, the dynamic pressure bulb and the existing soil stiffness is analysed and discussed

El uso de los itinerarios didácticos (SIG) en la educación ambiental

    Get PDF
They offer significant information about natural, social and cultural elements and so they become more and more indispensable when working on the environment. The aim of this paper is to consider Google Earth as an educational tool to teach the Environmental Education. Students of the Bachelor Degree in Primary Education of the University of Córdoba (Spain) have used this software to produce Educational Itineraries related to Environmental Education

Effect of drill speed on the strain distribution during drilling of bovine and human bones

    Get PDF
Drilling is an operation commonly required in orthopaedic surgery for insertion of screws and internal fixation of bone fractures. Induced damage is one of the undesired effects of drilling mainly due to the use of inadequate drilling parameters. During the recent years, scientists have been trying to describe the relationship between drilling parameters and bone injury. However, no studies have examined the level of strain generated in the bone during the drilling process. This paper focuses on the analysis of different drill speeds during drilling of fresh bovine femora and human cadaveric tibiae. The main contribution of this work is to determine how differences in applied drill speeds affect the strain of cortical tissue near the drilling site and the drill bit temperature. This research was supported by the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology under the research project UID/EMS/50022/2013. Storytelling as a tool for science teaching in bilingual primary education

    Get PDF
This paper underlines the use of storytelling as an effective didactic resource in Primary Science Teaching in English. In order to implement this tool, it is necessary to present an overview of the current situation regarding not only the most relevant issues in Science teaching and learning, but also the way that Bilingual Education has been implemented in the last years. In addition, the concept of storytelling will be defined to reach wide enough knowledge to understand its significance. Then, a storytelling proposal will be suggested, including a sort of activities that we can put into practice and some guidelines concerning different aspects that we need to take into consideration when telling a story
