One of the most outstanding changes is the spread of the photogrammetric systems based on algorithms referred to as Structure from Motion (SfM) in contrast with the traditional stereoscopic pairs. Nevertheless, the availability of important collections of stereoscopic registers collected during past decades invites us to explore the possibilities for re-using these photographs in order to generate new multimedia products, especially due to the fact that many of the documented elements have been largely altered or even disappeared. This article analyses an example of application to the re-use of a collection of photographs from the palaeontological site of Ambrona (Soria, Spain). More specifically, different pieces of software based on Structure from Motion (SfM) algorithms for the generation of 3D models with photographic textures are tested and some derived products such as orthoimages, video or applications of Augmented Reality (AR) are presented.[ES] Las herramientas de modelado 3D a partir de imágenes fotográficas han experimentado avances muy significativos en los últimos años.

Can statistical methods optimize complex multicomponent mixtures for sintering ceramic granular materials? A case of success with synthetic aggregates

The relationship between the proportions of multicomponent mixtures with the technological properties of ceramic granular materials (synthetic aggregates) has been studied using statistical methods. The four phases involved in the formulations have been: kaolin (K) as aluminosilicate source; cork powder (C) as organic carbon source; sodium carbonate (N) as flux and pyrite (P) as source of iron and sulfur. The Mixture Experiments - Design of Experiments (ME-DOE) has been the statistical methodology applied from the initial configuration of the 36 starting formulations to the final validation of the models and optimums. After granulation, artificial aggregates have been obtained by sintering in a rotary kiln, and their main technological properties have been determined. Bloating index (BI), particle density (ρrd), water absorption (WA24) and crushing strength (S) were selected as the four key characteristics to be modeled and optimized, using response surface and effect plots to assess the effect of K, C, N and P on such properties. 32 out of 36 starting varieties met the density criteria for lightweight aggregates. In the optimum formulations obtained, the minimum percentage of K was 83 wt%, so that the variations in the percentages of P, C and N were the critical variables for determining the final properties of the aggregate. The contrast between experimental and estimated data has shown that the models fit adequately, indicating that this type of approach may have enormous potential for future research on artificial aggregates and other ceramic materialsThis research was conducted as a part of the ECO-MET-AL Project, PID2019-109520RB-I00 / AEI / 10.13039/501100011033, “Can industrial and mining metalliferous wastes produce green lightweight aggregates? Impact of COVID-19 Confinement on Mental Health in Youth and Vulnerable Populations: An Extensive Narrative Review

    No full text
The objective of this narrative review is to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on the mental health of particularly vulnerable groups. This information will allow a better understanding of the determining factors that influence the appearance and/or maintenance of mood disorders. To achieve the main objective of this study, a critical review was carried out in which primary sources such as scientific articles, secondary sources such as databases, and other appropriate reference indexes were considered. The results indicated that there was an increase in the diagnosis of mood disorders and the use of medication associated with these disorders, mainly during the period of reclusion that was declared worldwide in March 2020. In addition, risk factors such as loneliness, a lack of resilience, and a lack of adequate coping strategies negatively impacted these groups. The future consequences of this may be reflected over many years thereafter, and it is important that all data obtained from this point forward be considered by mental health professionals and the general population. This review can be a starting point for looking directly at the most vulnerable populations and considering both the resources available to them and the possible aftermath of a traumatic period in everyone’s lives

Solution structure and stability against digestion of rproBnIb, a recombinant 2S albumin from rapeseed: Relationship to its allergenic properties

    No full text
NMR spectroscopy has been used to determine the solution structure of the precursor form of the recombinant napin BnIb, rproBnIb, a 2S albumin, 109-residue protein from the seeds of Brassica napus. More than 90% of the side-chain proton resonances were unambiguously assigned from the analysis of two-dimensional correlation (COSY), total correlation (TOCSY), and nuclear Overhauser effect (NOESY) spectra. The final structures were computed by using restrained molecular dynamics on the basis of 1316 upper-limit distance constraints derived from NOE cross-correlation intensities. The computed structures exhibited a root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) radius of 0.66 Å for the backbone and 1.16 Å for the side-chain heavy atoms of the structural core. The resulting structure consists of five amphipathic helices arranged in a right-handed super helix, a folding motif found in other proteins of the prolamin superfamily. As in the case of the mature protein, the recombinant precursor behaves as a plant food allergen. To trace out the origin and characteristics of its allergenic properties, rproBnIb was assayed against simulated gastric fluid and found to be very resistant to proteolysis. Also, heat treatment of the protein followed up to 85 °C by circular dichroism showed a very limited unfolding, which was recovered after cooling to 20 °C, indicating a high thermal stability. These results suggest that rproBnIb, as other 2S albumins, may be able to reach the gut immune system intact. A comparison of the putative epitopes against IgE antibodies of the three members of the prolamine family [2S albumins, nonspecific lipid transfer proteins (nsLTPs), and α-amylase/trypsin inhibitors] indicates that there are not common surfaces of interaction with IgE. Though the epitopes appear to be located in different regions of the proteins, they do comply with the requirements of being solvent-exposed and flexible. This work was supported by Projects BIO2002-00720 and SAF2002- 02711 of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology granted to J.S. and R.R., respectively.
