New records of terrestrial bugs from the Maltese Islands with an updated list of Maltese Heteroptera (Insecta : Hemiptera)

    Get PDF
Thirty-four species of Heteroptera were found from the Maltese islands during a sampling period of a week in April of 2009. Of these, seven represent new records for this territory and include the seed bugs Artheneis foveolata, Emblethis duplicatus, Engistus boops boops and Oxycarenus hyalinipennis and the plant bugs Megalodactylus macularubra, Mimocoris sp. and Phytocoris sp. The integration of the records from the last Catalogue of Maltese Heteroptera, the Catalogue of the Heteroptera of the Palaeartic Region and the present data raised the heteroptera known from the Maltese islands to 223 species accommodated in 161 genera and 26 families.peer-reviewe

    Totalistarism and human rights

This essay is devoted to analyse the features which are common to totalitarian doctrines. Notwithstanding the differences between fascism, nazism and stalinism, they have certain shared elements focused in the denial of democracy and of human rights. Besides, the totalitarian regimes did to hesitate to employ terror and violence to further these aims

The main chapel and the sacristy of the convent church of la Merced de Baza

The main chapel and the sacristy of the church of La Merced de Baza, remarkable works of the conventual architecture of south-east Spain, follow the most usual solution in the stonework constructions of the XVI century in the north of the Kingdom of Granada, a synthesis between modern and ancient, a symbiosis between Renaissance architecture and the last throes of the Gothic. These buildings tell us about the importance of the architectural production of the five hundred in the granadian highlands and the prominent role of Rodrigo de Gibaja, and other stonemasons, at the Andalusian level

No Going Back: Policies for an Equitable and Inclusive Los Angeles

    Get PDF
Prior to the stay-at-home public health directive, civic boosters promoted Los Angeles as a metropolis that was confronting its problems and making progress. Local and state governments enjoyed budget surpluses, unprecedented investments were committed by Angelenos to respond to homelessness, and access to health care and high school graduation rates were at historically high levels, while unemployment and crime rates were at celebrated lows. But behind this glossy view of LA, a closer look at the data would have revealed a very different reality, where decades of structural and systemic racism resulted in significant social, economic, and racial inequality. Just a few months into a global pandemic, the cracks in the broken systems have become gaping holes, widening each day. Today, the calls for systemic change are loud, consequential and urgent.Early in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, ten foundations wisely convened a diverse group of community, civic, non-profit, labor and business leaders to identify the systemic issues emerging from the crisis and to offer up a blueprint for building a more equitable and inclusive LA. Their past philanthropic work had made it clear that Los Angeles was becoming increasingly inequitable, and they feared the acceleration of disparate impact centered on income and race. The Committee for Greater LA was formed, and for the past five months, it has steered the analytical work completed by two of LA's leading institutions, UCLA and USC, supported by a team of consultants. The report that follows reflects our discourse, analysis and discovery

Seedling Emergence from Seed Banks in Ludwigia hexapetala-Invaded Wetlands: Implications for Restoration

    Get PDF
Soil seed banks play a critical role in the maintenance of wetland plant communities and contribute to revegetation following disturbances. Analysis of the seed bank can therefore inform restoration planning and management. Emergence from seed banks may vary in response to hydrologic conditions and sediment disturbances. To assess the community-level impact of exotic Ludwigia hexapetala on soil seed banks, we compared differences in species composition of standing vegetation among invaded and non-invaded wetlands and the degree of similarity between vegetation and soil seed banks in northern California. To determine potential seed bank recruitment of L. hexapetala and associated plant species, we conducted a seedling emergence assay in response to inundation regime (drawdown vs. flooded) and sediment depth (surface vs. buried). Plant species richness, evenness, and Shannon’s H’ diversity were substantially lower in standing vegetation at L. hexapetala invaded sites as compared to non-invaded sites. Over 12 months, 69 plant taxa germinated from the seed banks, including L. hexapetala and several other exotic taxa. Seedling density varied among sites, being the highest (10,500 seedlings m−2) in surface sediments from non-invaded sites subjected to drawdown treatments. These results signal the need for invasive plant management strategies to deplete undesirable seed banks for restoration success
