Interchannel coupling effects in the spin polarization of energetic photoelectrons
Effects of the interchannel coupling on the spin polarization of energetic
photoelectrons emitted from atomic Ne valence subshells are examined. Like
previously obtained results for cross sections and angular distributions, the
photoelectron spin polarization parameters too are found considerably
influenced by the coupling. The result completes a series of studies to finally
conclude that the independent particle description is inadequate for the {\em
entire} range of photoionization dynamics over the {\em full} spectral energy
domainComment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted in Phys. Rev.
Correlation structure in nondipole photoionization
The nondipole parameters that characterize the angular disribution of the
photoelectrons from the 3d subshell of Cs are found to be altered qualitatively
by the inclusion of correlation in the form of interchannel coupling between
the and photoionization channels. A prominent
characteristic maximum is predicted only in the parameters for
photoionization, while the effect for is rather weak. The results
are obtained within the framework of the Generalized Random Phase Approximation
with Exchange (GRPAE), which in addition to the RPAE effects takes into account
the rearrangement of all atomic electrons due to the creation of a 3d vacancy

Monthly mean climatology of the prevailing winds and tides in the Artic mesosphere/lower thermosphere
The Arctic MLT wind regime parameters measured at the ground-based network of MF and meteor radar stations (Andenes 69° N, Tromsø 70° N, Esrange 68° N, Dixon 73.5° N, Poker Flat 65° N and Resolute Bay 75° N) are discussed and compared with those observed in the mid-latitudes. The network of the ground-based MF and meteor radars for measuring winds in the Arctic upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere provides an excellent opportunity for study of the main global dynamical structures in this height region and their dependence from longitude. Preliminary estimates of the differences between the measured winds and tides from the different radar types, situated 125-273km apart (Tromsø, Andenes and Esrange), are provided. Despite some differences arising from using different types of radars it is possible to study the dynamical wind structures. It is revealed that most of the observed dynamical structures are persistent from year to year, thus permitting the analysis of the Arctic MLT dynamics in a climatological sense. The seasonal behaviour of the zonally averaged wind parameters is, to some extent, similar to that observed at the moderate latitudes. However, the strength of the winds (except the prevailing meridional wind and the diurnal tide amplitudes) in the Arctic MLT region is, in general, less than that detected at the moderate latitudes, decreasing toward the pole. There are also some features in the vertical structure and seasonal variations of the Arctic MLT winds which are different from the expectations of the well-known empirical wind models CIRA-86 and HWM-93. The tidal phases show a very definite longitudinal dependence that permits the determination of the corresponding zonal wave numbers. It is shown that the migrating tides play an important role in the dynamics of the Arctic MLT region. However, there are clear indications with the presence in some months of non-migrating tidal modes of significant appreciable amplitude
Should science educators deal with the science/religion issue?
I begin by examining the natures of science and religion before looking at the ways in which they relate to one another. I then look at a number of case studies that centre on the relationships between science and religion, including attempts to find mechanisms for divine action in quantum theory and chaos theory, creationism, genetic engineering and the writings of Richard Dawkins. Finally, I consider some of the pedagogical issues that would need to be considered if the science/religion issue is to be addressed in the classroom. I conclude that there are increasing arguments in favour of science educators teaching about the science/religion issue. The principal reason for this is to help students better to learn science. However, such teaching makes greater demands on science educators than has generally been the case. Certain of these demands are identified and some specific suggestions are made as to how a science educator might deal with the science/religion issue. © 2008 Taylor & Francis

Angle- and spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of the Hg 5d10 subshell
Schönhense G, Schäfers F, Heinzmann U, Kessler J. Angle- and spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of the Hg 5d10 subshell. Zeitschrift für Physik A: Hadrons and Nuclei. 1982;304(1):31-40.Parameters describing electron spin polarization in Hg 5d10 subshell photoionization have been measured at rare-gas resonance wavelengths between 73.59 nm and 30.38 nm. The spin parameters as well as asymmetry parameters beta of a recent measurement are discussed in comparison with both nonrelativistic and relativistic ab initio calculations of several authors. The importance of many-electron correlations and spin-orbit coupling effects is considered. We would like to express our thanks to F. Combet Farnoux, N. Cherepkov, W. Johnson and S. Experimental characterization of the Xe 5p photoionization by angle- and spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy
Heckenkamp C, Schäfers F, Schönhense G, Heinzmann U. Experimental characterization of the Xe 5p photoionization by angle- and spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. Zeitschrift für Physik D: Atoms, Molecules and Clusters. 1986;2(4):257-274.Spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with elliptically polarized radiation has been used to fully characterize the dynamics of photoelectron emission from free Xe atoms in the 5p-autoionization and continuum region. An advantageous reaction geometry and its experimental realization at the storage ring BESSY are discussed. The three independent experimental parameters which characterize the angular dependence of the photoelectron spin-polarization vector are reported for the wavelength range from 100nm to 40 nm. The results are compared with theoretical predictions based on RRPA-, RPAE- and semiempirical MQDT-calculations. The combination of existing data for the differential photoionization cross section with the spinpolarization parameters is used to completely decouple the photoionization channels: The transition matrix elements and their relative phases are determined separately for every single dissociation channel. The results are discussed in the context of the MQDT. Correlation effects and the influence of spin-orbit interaction on the continuum states most clearly show up when the Dill-Fano angular-momentum-transfer formalism is applied
