Are direct photons a clean signal of a thermalized quark gluon plasma?
Direct photon production from a quark gluon plasma (QGP) in thermal
equilibrium is studied directly in real time. In contrast to the usual S-matrix
calculations, the real time approach is valid for a QGP that formed and reached
LTE a short time after a collision and of finite lifetime ( as expected at RHIC or LHC). We point out that during such
finite QGP lifetime the spectrum of emitted photons carries information on the
initial state. There is an inherent ambiguity in separating the virtual from
the observable photons during the transient evolution of the QGP. We propose a
real time formulation to extract the photon yield which includes the initial
stage of formation of the QGP parametrized by an effective time scale of
formation . This formulation coincides with the S-matrix approach
in the infinite lifetime limit. It allows to separate the virtual cloud as well
as the observable photons emitted during the pre- equilibrium stage from the
yield during the QGP lifetime. We find that the lowest order contribution
which does \emph{not} contribute to the S-matrix
approach, is of the same order of or larger than the S-matrix contribution
during the lifetime of the QGP for a typical formation time . The yield for momenta features a
power law fall-off and is larger than that obtained
with the S-matrix for momenta . We provide a
comprehensive numerical comparison between the real time and S-matrix yields
and study the dynamics of the build-up of the photon cloud and the different
contributions to the radiative energy loss. The reliability of the current

Scalar-isoscalar excitation in dense quark matter
We study the spectrum of scalar-isoscalar excitations in the color-flavor
locked phase of dense quark matter. The sigma meson in this phase appears as a
four-quark state (of diquark and anti-diquark) with a well-defined mass and
extremely small width, as a consequence of it's small coupling to two pions.
The quark particle/hole degrees of freedom also contribute significantly to the
correlator just above the threshold 2\Delta where \Delta is the superconducting

Long-term trends in tropical cyclone tracks around Korea and Japan in late summer and early fall
This study investigates long-term trends in tropical cyclones (TCs) over the extratropical western North Pacific (WNP) over a period of 35 years (1982-2016). The area analyzed extended across 30-45 degrees N and 120-150 degrees E, including the regions of Korea and Japan that were seriously affected by TCs. The northward migration of TCs over the WNP to the mid-latitudes showed a sharp increase in early fall. In addition, the duration of TCs over the WNP that migrated northwards showed an increase, specifically in early to mid-September. Therefore, more recently, TC tracks have been observed to significantly extend into the mid-latitudes. The recent northward extension of TC tracks over the WNP in early fall was observed to be associated with changes in environmental conditions that were favorable for TC activities, including an increase in sea surface temperature (SST), decrease in vertical wind shear, expansion of subtropical highs, strong easterly steering winds, and an increase in relative vorticity. In contrast, northward migrations of TCs to Korea and Japan showed a decline in late August, because of the presence of unfavorable environmental conditions for TC activities. These changes in environmental conditions, such as SST and vertical wind shear, can be partially associated with the Pacific decadal oscillation
Multicolour interphase cytogenetics: 24 chromosome probes, 6 colours, 4 layers
From the late 1980s onwards, the use of DNA probes to visualise sequences on individual chromosomes (fluorescent in-situ hybridisation - FISH) revolutionised the study of cytogenetics. Following single colour experiments, more fluorochromes were added, culminating in a 24 colour assay that could distinguish all human chromosomes. Interphase cytogenetics (the detection of chromosome copy number in interphase nuclei) soon followed, however 24 colour experiments are hampered for this application as mixing fluorochromes to produce secondary colours produces images that are not easily distinguishable from overlapping signals. This study reports the development and use of a novel protocol, new fast hybridising FISH probes, and a bespoke image capture system for the assessment of chromosome copy number in interphase nuclei. The multicolour probe sets can be used individually or in sequential hybridisation layers to assess ploidy of all 24 human chromosomes in the same nucleus. Applications of this technique are in the investigation of chromosome copy number and the assessment of nuclear organisation for a range of different cell types including human sperm, cancer cells and preimplantation embryos
Dynamical Chiral Symmetry Breaking on the Light Front I. DLCQ Approach
Dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in the DLCQ method is investigated in
detail using a chiral Yukawa model closely related to the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio
model. By classically solving three constraints characteristic of the
light-front formalism, we show that the chiral transformation defined on the
light front is equivalent to the usual one when bare mass is absent. A quantum
analysis demonstrates that a nonperturbative mean-field solution to the
``zero-mode constraint'' for a scalar boson (sigma) can develop a nonzero
condensate while a perturbative solution cannot. This description is due to our
identification of the ``zero-mode constraint'' with the gap equation. The
mean-field calculation clarifies unusual chiral transformation properties of
fermionic field, which resolves a seemingly inconsistency between triviality of
the null-plane chiral charge Q_5|0>=0 and nonzero condensate. We also calculate
masses of scalar and pseudoscalar bosons for both symmetric and broken phases,
and eventually derive the PCAC relation and nonconservation of Q_5 in the

Conserved Quasilocal Quantities and General Covariant Theories in Two Dimensions
General matterless--theories in 1+1 dimensions include dilaton gravity,
Yang--Mills theory as well as non--Einsteinian gravity with dynamical torsion
and higher power gravity, and even models of spherically symmetric d = 4
General Relativity. Their recent identification as special cases of
'Poisson--sigma--models' with simple general solution in an arbitrary gauge,
allows a comprehensive discussion of the relation between the known absolutely
conserved quantities in all those cases and Noether charges, resp. notions of
quasilocal 'energy--momentum'. In contrast to Noether like quantities,
quasilocal energy definitions require some sort of 'asymptotics' to allow an
interpretation as a (gauge--independent) observable. Dilaton gravitation,
although a little different in detail, shares this property with the other
cases. We also present a simple generalization of the absolute conservation law

Signatures of Thermal Dilepton Radiation at RHIC
The properties of thermal dilepton production from heavy-ion collisions in
the RHIC energy regime are evaluated for invariant masses ranging from 0.5 to 3
GeV. Using an expanding thermal fireball to model the evolution through both
quark-gluon and hadronic phases various features of the spectra are addressed.
In the low-mass region, due to an expected large background, the focus is on
possible medium modifications of the narrow resonance structures from
and mesons, whereas in the intermediate-mass region the old idea of
identifying QGP radiation is reiterated including effects of chemical
under-saturation in the early stages of central Au+Au collisions.Comment: 17 pages ReVTeX including 16 figure
