Electromagnetic Forming of Longitudinal Strengthening Ribs in Roll Formed Automotive Profiles
In the automotive industry, increasing ecological concerns and demands for higher performance have become lightweight construction a key aspect. Due to the gradual introduction of high strength materials on the one side, and greater consideration with regard to continuous manufacturing technologies on the other side, it is possible nowadays to address the demands that structural and complex automotive parts have to face, from the standpoint of lightweight manufacturing. Thickness, shape and impact conditions constitute the main aspects to consider for such parts and shape conditions in particular require from complex, costly and lengthy procedures, especially when discontinuous forming operations such as stamping and hydro forming procedures are selected. However, continuous forming operations like Roll Forming (RF) can prove to be advantageous and suited for scalable parts (e.g in length) and at the same time be economically reasonable. RF lines as well generally incorporate additional installations to perform multiple forming operations destined to imprint strengthening ribs perform punching operations or weld certain parts. It is in this context where the usefulness of the electromagnetic forming technology for completion of auxiliary operations can be proven, given its flexibility and reasonable investment costs. Electromagnetic forming (EMF) is a contact-free technique where large forces can be imparted to a conductive metallic workpiece by a pure electromagnetic interaction. The produced electromagnetic pressure can produce stresses in the workpiece that are several times larger than the material flow stress. Ultimately this can cause the workpiece to deform plastically and to be accelerated achieving high velocities. Once the velocity is imparted to the workpiece, the shape can be developed either by free or die forming. The work described in this paper explores the potential of the EMF process to adequately form shallow longitudinal ribs or stiffeners in components previously formed utilizing an innovative concept called Flexible Roll Forming, developed at The Technical University of Darmstadt in Germany, by means of magnetic pulse forming, maintaining the integrity of the workpiece while trying to meet industry standard tolerances. Profiles exhibiting hat-like cross sections made of AHSS steels were subjected to localized impulses in order to achieve strengthening features in the roll formed part. ZStE340 steel alloy profiles were first roll formed and then inserted in the EM forming installation designed for the occasion. A high strength copper alloy (Cr-Zr-Cu) was used as a conductor for the single turn coil, placed opposite to the sidewall in the moment of the energy delivery. Formed specimens were subsequently measured to account for existing dimensional deviations
Characterisation of apple cider cultivars by chemometric techniques using data from high-performance liquid chromatography and flow-injection analysis
Analytical techniques (HPLC and flow-injection analysis) for determining sugars, organic acids, polyphenols and pectins in apples, were employed along with chemometrics in the ripening and classification studies of cider apples. The use of principal component analysis allowed the authors to reduce the dimensionality of the data matrix; three new variables were obtained that accounted for 76% of variance. The projection of the apple cultivars in the reduced space allowed us to visualize the data structure on the basis of the degree of ripening and technological characteristics of the cider apple varieties monitored. Linear discriminant analysis computed a canonical variable with a prediction capacity of 93%, using three groups for cancellation in order to validate the method. The use of modelling techniques, such as SIMCA and partial least squares made an adequate grouping of apple cultivars feasible on the basis of their degree of ripening
Comparison of methods for the enumeration of coliphages in 100 mL water samples
In the last decade coliphages have been included in many water quality regulations as viral faecal indicators. However, the standardised methods used to detect and quantify coliphages differ in bacterial host strains, culture media and techniques. In this comparative study, 100 mL samples of mineral drinking water, river water and wastewater were analysed with International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard methods, with United States-Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) based methods as well as commercial kits combining a single agar layer (SAL) assay with ISO bacterial host strains. The three methods gave similar counts (p-value>0.05) for somatic and total coliphages in the matrices with less than 100 PFU/100 mL, whereas for F-specific coliphages, the U.S. EPA method provided statistically significant lower numbers (p-value<0.05) than the other two protocols, possibly because it uses a different bacterial host strain (Escherichia coli HS (pFamp) R vs. the ISO strain Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium WG49). In samples with more than 100 PFU/100 mL, the ISO method yielded higher counts of somatic coliphages than the other two protocols (p-value<0.05). As the three methods provided similar results in clean water, the approach combining a SAL assay with the ISO bacterial host strain could be a useful option for coliphage analysis in this type of sample, as it does not require a concentration step

Las cerámicas aborígenes de Gran Canaria (Islas Canarias) a través del yacimiento de La Cerera: materias primas, tecnología y función
[spa] Se analizan los materiales cerámicos prehispánicos del yacimiento de La Cerera en Gran Canaria (siglos VII-XIII D.C.). Se integra la clasificación morfotécnica y funcional, y la caracterización instrumental mediante fluorescencia de rayos X (FRX), difracción de rayos X (DRX), petrografía óptica (PO) y microscopía electrónica de barrido (MEB) relacionando cada nivel de estudio aplicado. Comoresultado se detectaron diferentes cadenas operativas, conectadas con la función de los vasos y su cronología. Además se observaron importantes cambios diacrónicos en las características del material. Estos parecen coincidir con otros identificados en el registro del propio yacimiento y en otros sitios de la isla. También se discuten los posibles efectos de la intensificación de la producción sobre la homogeneidad de las fábricas cerámicas. [eng] Pre-Hispanic ceramics from the site of La Cerera at Gran Canaria are studied in this paper (7th century cal AD - 13th century cal AD). An integrated approach combining various levels of analysis has been carried out, employing morphological, technical and functional analysis of the pots, as well as instrumental characterization: X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, optical petrography and scanning electron microscopy. As result, different operative chains have been detected, linked to pots function and chronology. Other differences were observed, as important changes in the characteristics of the archaeological materials through time. Those transformations seem to coincide with others changes already observed for different elements of the aboriginal material culture at the site, as well as at other parts of the island. Effects of production intensification over the homogeneity of ceramic fabrics are also discussed

Establishment of a human cell-based in vitro battery to assess developmental neurotoxicity hazard of chemicals
Developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) is a major safety concern for all chemicals of the human exposome. However, DNT data from animal studies are available for only a small percentage of manufactured compounds. Test methods with a higher throughput than current regulatory guideline methods, and with improved human relevance are urgently needed. We therefore explored the feasibility of DNT hazard assessment based on new approach methods (NAMs). An in vitro battery (IVB) was assembled from ten individual NAMs that had been developed during the past years to probe effects of chemicals on various fundamental neurodevelopmental processes. All assays used human neural cells at different developmental stages. This allowed us to assess disturbances of: (i) proliferation of neural progenitor cells (NPC); (ii) migration of neural crest cells, radial glia cells, neurons and oligodendrocytes; (iii) differentiation of NPC into neurons and oligodendrocytes; and (iv) neurite outgrowth of peripheral and central neurons. In parallel, cytotoxicity measures were obtained. The feasibility of concentration-dependent screening and of a reliable biostatistical processing of the complex multi-dimensional data was explored with a set of 120 test compounds, containing subsets of pre-defined positive and negative DNT compounds. The battery provided alerts (hit or borderline) for 24 of 28 known toxicants (82% sensitivity), and for none of the 17 negative controls.
