    Non-linear Dynamics in a Business-Cycle Model with Logistic Population Growth

    We consider a discrete-time growth model of the Solow type where workers and shareholders have different but constant saving rates and the population growth dynamics is described by the logistic equation able to exhibit complicated dynamics. We show conditions for the resulting system having a compact global attractor and we describe its structure. We also perform a mainly numerical analysis using the critical lines method able to describe the strange attractor and the absorbing area, in order to show how cyclical or complex fluctuations may be produced in a business-cycle model. We study the dynamic behaviour of the model under different ranges of the main parameters, i.e. the elasticity of substitution between the two production factors and the one in the logistic equation (namely m). We prove the existence of complex dynamics when the elasticity of substitution between production factors drops below one (so that capital income declines) or m increases (so that the amplitude of movements in the population growth rate increases)

    Local and Global Dynamics in a Neoclassical Growth Model with NonConcave Production Function and NonConstant Population Growth Rate

    In this paper we analyze the dynamics shown by the neoclassical one-sector growth model with differential savings as in Bohm and Kaas [J. Econom. Dynam. Control, 24 (2000), pp. 965--980] while assuming a sigmoidal production function as in [V. Capasso, R. Engbers, and D. La Torre, Nonlinear Anal., 11 (2010), pp. 3858--3876] and the labor force dynamics described by the Beverton--Holt equation (see [R. J. H. Beverton and S. J. Holt, Fishery Invest., 19 (1957), pp. 1--533]). We prove that complex features are exhibited, related both to the structure of the coexisting attractors (which can be periodic or chaotic) and to their basins (which can be simple or nonconnected). In particular we show that complexity emerges if the elasticity of substitution between production factors is low enough and shareholders save more than workers, confirming the results obtained with concave production functions. Anyway, in contrast to previous studies, the use of the S-shaped production function implies the existence of a poverty trap: by performing a global analysis we study the properties of the regions generating trajectories converging to it

    Determination and Analysis of Residual Stresses Induced by High Speed Milling Using a Micro-indent Method

    The purpose of this work is to determine and analyze residual stress normal components and anisotropy degrees introduced by high-speed milling in specimens of AA 6082-T6 and AA 7075-T6 aluminum alloys. At each machined sample, the climb and conventional cutting zones were evaluated and compared. This paper includes a comprehensive study of thermal and mechanical effects associated with the residual stress introduction. For normal components determination, an optimized micro-indent method was used. Each measurement sequence from this approach was performed using a high accuracy measuring machine and classified according to thermal deviations measured. The residual displacements were determined with an absolute error down to ±300 nm. The normal components analysis allowed to infer the strong influence of the rolling process previous to high-speed milling and besides, the stress levels associated with thermal effects (higher in AA 7075-T6). Finally, the lower residual stress anisotropy degrees in both materials observed in the conventional cutting zone would indicate more homogenous local plastic stretching in this region for all planar directions.Fil: Vottero, S..     Detection of prions in skin punch biopsies of Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease patients

    Prion real-time quaking-induced conversion (RT-QuIC) is an ultrasensitive assay detecting pathological aggregates of misfolded prion protein in biospecimens. We studied 71 punch biopsy skin samples of 35 patients with Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (CJD), including five assessed in vitam. The results confirmed the high value of skin prion RT-QuIC for CJD diagnosis (89% sensitivity and 100% specificity) and support its use in clinical practice. Preliminary data based on a limited number of cases suggest that prion-seeding activity in the skin varies according to the prion strain, being higher in sporadic CJD subtypes linked to the V2 strain (VV2 and MV2K) than in typical CJDMM1

    Dual-Beam Optical Linear Polarimetry from the Southern Skies : characterisation of CASPOL for high precision polarimetry

    We present a characterization of CasPol, a dual-beam polarimeter mounted at the 2.15-m Jorge Sahade Telescope, located at the Complejo Astronómico El Leoncito, Argentina. The telescope is one of the few available meter-sized optical telescopes located in the southern hemisphere hosting a polarimeter. To carry out this work, we collected photopolarimetric data along five observing campaigns, the first one during January 2014, and the remaining ones spread between August 2017 and March 2018. The data were taken through the Johnson?Cousins V, R, and I filters. Along the campaigns, we observed eight unpolarized and four polarized standard stars. Our analysis began characterizing the impact of seeing and aperture into the polarimetric measurements, defining an optimum aperture extraction and setting a clear limit for seeing conditions. Then, we used the unpolarized standard stars to characterize the level of instrumental polarization and to assess the presence of polarization dependent on the position across the charge-coupled device. Polarized standard stars were investigated to quantify the stability of the instrument with wavelength. Specifically, we find that the overall instrumental polarization of CasPol is ∼0.2  %   in the V, R, and I bands, with a negligible polarization dependence on the position of the stars on the detector. The stability of the half-wave plate retarder is about 0.35 deg, making CasPol comparable to already existing instruments. We also provide measurements in the three photometric bands for both the unpolarized and polarized standard stars.     In questo lavoro si presenta un modulo didattico dal titolo La Lingua Matematica, rivolto a studenti del primo anno di scuola secondaria di secondo grado.Il modulo è stato presentato in classi di Liceo Matematico, ma può essere proposto anche in altri contesti. Esso ha un duplice obiettivo: introdurre questioni relative a matematica e linguaggio da un lato e introdurre i concetti di teorema e dimostrazione dall'altro. Il percorso ha permesso di introdurre nozioni di aritmetica modulare e ha condotto gli studenti a confrontarsi, elaborare ipotesi, produrre argomentazioni e generare nuovi teoremi

    Diagnostic value of plasma p-tau181, NfL, and GFAP in a clinical setting cohort of prevalent neurodegenerative dementias

    Background: Increasing evidence supports the use of plasma biomarkers of neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation to screen and diagnose patients with dementia. However, confirmatory studies are required to demonstrate their usefulness in the clinical setting. Methods: We evaluated plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from consecutive patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) (n = 59), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) (n = 31), corticobasal syndrome (CBS) (n = 29), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) (n = 49), Alzheimer disease (AD) (n = 97), and suspected non-AD physiopathology (n = 51), as well as plasma samples from 60 healthy controls (HC). We measured neurofilament light chain (NfL), phospho-tau181 (p-tau181), and glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP) using Simoa (all plasma biomarkers and CSF GFAP), CLEIA (CSF p-tau181), and ELISA (CSF NfL) assays. Additionally, we stratified patients according to the A/T/N classification scheme and the CSF α-synuclein real-time quaking-induced conversion assay (RT-QuIC) results. Results: We found good correlations between CSF and plasma biomarkers for NfL (rho = 0.668, p < 0.001) and p-tau181 (rho = 0.619, p < 0.001). Plasma NfL was significantly higher in disease groups than in HC and showed a greater increase in FTD than in AD [44.9 (28.1–68.6) vs. 21.9 (17.0–27.9) pg/ml, p < 0.001]. Conversely, plasma p-tau181 and GFAP levels were significantly higher in AD than in FTD [3.2 (2.4–4.3) vs. 1.1 (0.7–1.6) pg/ml, p < 0.001; 404.7 (279.7–503.0) vs. 198.2 (143.9–316.8) pg/ml, p < 0.001]. GFAP also allowed discriminating disease groups from HC. In the distinction between FTD and AD, plasma p-tau181 showed better accuracy (AUC 0.964) than NfL (AUC 0.791) and GFAP (AUC 0.818). In DLB and CBS, CSF amyloid positive (A+) subjects had higher plasma p-tau181 and GFAP levels than A− individuals. CSF RT-QuIC showed positive α-synuclein seeding activity in 96% DLB and 15% AD patients with no differences in plasma biomarker levels in those stratified by RT-QuIC result. Conclusions: In a single-center clinical cohort, we confirm the high diagnostic value of plasma p-tau181 for distinguishing FTD from AD and plasma NfL for discriminating degenerative dementias from HC. Plasma GFAP alone differentiates AD from FTD and neurodegenerative dementias from HC but with lower accuracy than p-tau181 and NfL. In CBS and DLB, plasma p-tau181 and GFAP levels are significantly influenced by beta-amyloid pathology

    The first observed stellar occultations by the irregular satellite Phoebe (Saturn IX) and improved rotational period

    peer reviewedWe report six stellar occultations by Phoebe (Saturn IX), an irregular satellite of Saturn, obtained between mid-2017 and mid-2019. The 2017 July 6 event was the first stellar occultation by an irregular satellite ever observed. The occultation chords were compared to a 3D shape model of the satellite obtained from Cassini observations. The rotation period available in the literature led to a sub-observer point at the moment of the observed occultations where the chords could not fit the 3D model. A procedure was developed to identify the correct sub-observer longitude. It allowed us to obtain the rotation period with improved precision compared to the currently known value from literature. We show that the difference between the observed and the predicted sub-observer longitude suggests two possible solutions for the rotation period. By comparing these values with recently observed rotational light curves and single- chord stellar occultations, we can identify the best solution for Phoebe's rotational period as 9.27365 ± 0.00002 h. From the stellar occultations, we also obtained six geocentric astrometric positions in the ICRS as realized by the Gaia DR2 with uncertainties at the 1-mas level

    Association between CSF alpha-synuclein seeding activity and genetic status in Parkinson’s disease and dementia with Lewy bodies

    The clinicopathological heterogeneity in Lewy-body diseases (LBD) highlights the need for pathology-driven biomarkers in-vivo. Misfolded alpha-synuclein (α-Syn) is a lead candidate based on its crucial role in disease pathophysiology. Real-time quaking-induced conversion (RT-QuIC) analysis of CSF has recently shown high sensitivity and specificity for the detection of misfolded α-Syn in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). In this study we performed the CSF RT-QuIC assay in 236 PD and 49 DLB patients enriched for different genetic forms with mutations in GBA, parkin, PINK1, DJ1, and LRRK2. A subgroup of 100 PD patients was also analysed longitudinally. We correlated kinetic seeding parameters of RT-QuIC with genetic status and CSF protein levels of molecular pathways linked to α-Syn proteostasis. Overall, 85% of PD and 86% of DLB patients showed positive RT-QuIC α-Syn seeding activity. Seeding profiles were significantly associated with mutation status across the spectrum of genetic LBD. In PD patients, we detected positive α-Syn seeding in 93% of patients carrying severe GBA mutations, in 78% with LRRK2 mutations, in 59% carrying heterozygous mutations in recessive genes, and in none of those with bi-allelic mutations in recessive genes. Among PD patients, those with severe GBA mutations showed the highest seeding activity based on RT-QuIC kinetic parameters and the highest proportion of samples with 4 out of 4 positive replicates. In DLB patients, 100% with GBA mutations showed positive α-Syn seeding compared to 79% of wildtype DLB. Moreover, we found an association between α-Syn seeding activity and reduced CSF levels of proteins linked to α-Syn proteostasis, specifically lysosome-associated membrane glycoprotein 2 and neurosecretory protein VGF. These findings highlight the value of α-Syn seeding activity as an in-vivo marker of Lewy-body pathology and support its use for patient stratification in clinical trials targeting α-Syn
