    Databases Selection in a Systematic Review of the Association between Anthropometric Measurements and Dental Caries among Children in Asia

    A comprehensive search for primary studies using a sufficient number and relevant databases is critical to minimise bias and increase the validity of a systematic review. We examined the frequency and choices of databases commonly used to provide an efficient search of primary studies for a systematic review of anthropometric measurements and dental caries among children in Asia. Twelve previous systematic reviews on a similar topic were retrieved from six databases. The frequency and choice of databases used by reviewers were determined from the methods sections. We also identified the lists of other databases usually searched in other reviews. Eligibility criteria for final databases selection were the database’s scope, the topic of interest, design of the study, type of article, and the accessibility of the databases. Of the 77 databases identified, previous reviews on this topic used 21 databases, ranging from 2 to 12 databases in each review. Medline, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and PubMed were employed most frequently. Twenty-six databases were eligible and selected for the present review. Twelve were regional databases to provide comprehensive coverage of primary studies. A systematic approach in selecting appropriate databases for searching primary studies is paramount to reduce errors, ensure coverage, and increase the validity of systematic reviews’ conclusions

    Association between Harmful and Addictive Perceptions of E-Cigarettes and E-Cigarette Use among Adolescents and Youth—A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    Background: Recognising the association between the perceived risks of e-cigarettes and e-cigarette usage among youth is critical for planning effective prevention and intervention initiatives; thus, a systematic review and meta-analysis were performed. Methods: Fourteen databases were searched for eligible studies from the Inception of database until March 2022 to examine the effect estimates of the association between perceptions of harmfulness and addictiveness and overall e-cigarette usage among adolescents and youth. Results: The meta-analysis showed that in comparison to non-users, young people who were ever e-cigarette users were two times more likely to disagree that e-cigarettes are harmful (OR: 2.20, 95% CI: 1.41–3.43) and perceived e-cigarettes as less harmful than tobacco cigarettes (OR: 2.01, 95% CI 1.47–2.75). Youths who were ever e-cigarette users were also 2.3 and 1.8 times more likely to perceive e-cigarettes as less addictive (OR: 2.28, 95% CI: 1.81–2.88) or perceive e-cigarettes as more addictive (OR: 1.82, 95% CI: 1.22–2.73) than tobacco cigarettes, as compared with non-users. The subgroup analysis reported that adolescents were more likely to believe that e-cigarettes are less harmful than tobacco cigarettes, while youth users perceived otherwise. Conclusion: the risk perceptions of e-cigarettes are associated with e-cigarette use among adolescents and youth and could be the focus of health promotion to prevent and curb the uptake of e-cigarettes among young people

    Selecting Risk of Bias Tools for Observational Studies for a Systematic Review of Anthropometric Measurements and Dental Caries among Children

    In conducting a systematic review, assessing the risk of bias of the included studies is a vital step; thus, choosing the most pertinent risk of bias (ROB) tools is crucial. This paper determined the most appropriate ROB tools for assessing observational studies in a systematic review assessing the association between anthropometric measurements and dental caries among children. First, we determined the ROB tools used in previous reviews on a similar topic. Subsequently, we reviewed articles on ROB tools to identify the most recommended ROB tools for observational studies. Of the twelve ROB tools identified from the previous steps, three ROB tools that best fit the eight criteria of a good ROB tool were the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS) for cohort and case-control studies, and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP) for a cross-sectional study. We further assessed the inter-rater reliability for all three tools by analysing the percentage agreement, inter-class correlation coefficient (ICC) and kappa score. The overall percentage agreements and reliability scores of these tools ranged from good to excellent. Two ROB tools for the cross-sectional study were further evaluated qualitatively against nine of a tool’s advantages and disadvantages. Finally, the AHRQ and NOS were selected as the most appropriate ROB tool to assess cross-sectional and cohort studies in the present review

    Fructose-Drinking Water Induced Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Ultrastructural Alteration of Hepatocyte Mitochondria in Male Wistar Rat

    Background. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the complications of the metabolic syndrome. It encompasses a wide range of disease spectrum from simple steatosis to liver cirrhosis. Structural alteration of hepatic mitochondria might be involved in the pathogenesis of NAFLD. Aims. In the present study, we used a newly established model of fructose-induced metabolic syndrome in male Wistar rats in order to investigate the ultrastructural changes in hepatic mitochondria that occur with fructose consumption and their association with NAFLD pathogenesis. Methods. The concentration of fructose-drinking water (FDW) used in this study was 20%. Six male Wistar rats were supplemented with FDW 20% for eight weeks. Body composition and metabolic parameters were measured before and after 8 weeks of FDW 20%. Histomorphology of the liver was evaluated and ultrastructural changes of mitochondria were assessed with transmission electron micrograph. Results. After 8 weeks of fructose consumption, the animals developed several features of the metabolic syndrome. Moreover, fructose consumption led to the development of macrovesicular hepatic steatosis and mitochondrial ultrastructural changes, such as increase in mitochondrial size, disruption of the cristae, and reduction of matrix density. Conclusion. We conclude that in male Wistar rat 8-week consumption of FDW 20% leads to NAFLD likely via mitochondrial structural alteration

    The Establishment of Metabolic Syndrome Model by Induction of Fructose Drinking Water in Male Wistar Rats

    Background. Metabolic syndrome can be caused by modification of diet by means of consumption of high carbohydrate and high fat diet such as fructose. Aims. To develop a metabolic syndrome rat model by induction of fructose drinking water (FDW) in male Wistar rats. Methods. Eighteen male Wistar rats were fed with FDW 20% and FDW 25% for a duration of eight weeks. The physiological changes with regard to food and fluid intake, as well as calorie intake, were measured. The metabolic changes such as obesity, dyslipidaemia, hypertension, and hyperglycaemia were determined. Data was presented in mean ± SEM subjected to one-way ANOVA. Results. Male Wistar rats fed with FDW 20% for eight weeks developed significant higher obesity parameters compared to those fed with FDW 25%. There was hypertrophy of adipocytes in F20 and F25. There were also systolic hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia, and hyperglycemia in both groups. Conclusion. We conclude that the metabolic syndrome rat model is best established with the induction of FDW 20% for eight weeks. This was evident in the form of higher obesity parameter which caused the development of the metabolic syndrome

    Systemic Antibiotics as an Adjunct to Subgingival Debridement: A Network Meta-Analysis

    This review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of systemic antibiotics as adjunctive treatment to subgingival debridement in patients with periodontitis. Randomized controlled trials were included that assessed the effectiveness of systemic antibiotics in improving periodontal status, indicated by clinical attachment gain level, probable pocket depth reduction, and bleeding on probing reduction of patients with any form of periodontitis at any follow-up time. Network meta-analyses with a frequentist model using random effects was employed to synthesize the data. The relative effects were reported as mean difference with a 95% confidence interval. Subsequently, all treatments were ranked based on their P-scores. A total of 30 randomized controlled trials were included in this network meta-analyses. Minimally important clinical differences were observed following the adjunctive use of satranidazole, metronidazole, and clindamycin for clinical attachment gain level and probable pocket depth reduction. For bleeding on probing reduction, minimally important clinical differences were observed following the adjunctive use of metronidazole and a combination of amoxycillin and metronidazole. However, the network estimates were supported by evidence with certainty ranging from very low to high. Therefore, the findings of this network meta-analyses should be interpreted with caution. Moreover, the use of these antibiotics adjunct to subgingival debridement should be weighed against possible harm to avoid overuse and inappropriate use of these antibiotics in patients with periodontitis

    Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibition prevents cell death via extrinsic and intrinsic apoptotic pathways in rat pancreas with insulin resistance

    The study aims to evaluate the effect of saxagliptin, a specific inhibitor of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 enzymes, on body weight gain, lipid profiles, and cell death through apoptosis in rats with insulin resistance (IR). Male adult Sprague-Dawley rats (n=32) were divided into 4 groups: control (Ctrl), IR, saxagliptin control, and IR treated with saxagliptin(IR+S). Insulin resistance was induced by 10% fructose in the drinking water for 8weeks. Saxagliptin (10mg/kg/day) was administrated by oral gavage for 2weeks. Biochemical parameters were measured spectrophotometrically. Peptides were determined by the streptavidin-biotin-peroxidase method. Although the amount of food and liquid consumed are inversely proportional, the calories received are almost equal between both Ctrl and IR groups, as well as IR and IR+S groups. Increased homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance, HOMA-, triglycerides, and very low-density lipoprotein in the IR group were comparatively decreased by saxagliptin administration. The area percentage of caspase-3 and apoptotic peptidase activating factor-1 immunopositive cells in the IR+S group decreased compared with the IR group. Similarly, the percentages of caspase-8 and -9 immunopositive cells in the IR group were higher than the IR+S group. It was observed that the percentage of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 immunopositive cells was increased in the IR+S group compared with the IR group. Thus, saxagliptin may prevent IR-induced apoptotic cell death and regulate impaired homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance and serum lipid levels
