Role for TGF-beta superfamily signaling in telencephalic GABAergic neuron development.
Signaling mechanisms mediated by the Transforming Growth Factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily regulate a variety of developmental processes. Here we show that components of both bone morphogenetic protein/growth differentiation factor and TGF-beta/activin/Nodal branches of TGF-beta superfamily signaling are expressed in the developing subpallium. Furthermore, Smad proteins, transcriptional effectors of TGF-beta signaling, are co-expressed and physically interact in the basal ganglia with Dlx homeodomain transcription factors, which are critical regulators of the differentiation, migration and survival of telencephalic GABAergic neurons. We also show that Dlx and Smad proteins localize to promoters/enhancers of a number of common telencephalic genes in vivo and that Smad proteins co-activate transcription with Dlx family members, except with certain mutated human DLX proteins identified in autistic individuals. In agreement with these observations, expression of dominant-negative Smads in the developing basal ganglia phenocopies the cell migration defects observed in Dlx1/2-deficient mice. Together, these results suggest that TGF-beta superfamily signaling plays a role in telencephalic GABAergic neuron development through functional interactions with Dlx transcription factors. Smoking Status, Changes in Smoking Status and Health-Related Quality of Life: Findings from the SUN (“Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra”) Cohort
We aimed to evaluate the association between smoking, changes in smoking, and quality of life in a cohort of Spanish university graduates. Smoking habits were self-reported at baseline and four years later. Quality of life was assessed using the Short Form-36 (SF-36) at year 4. Statistical differences in SF-36 scores between groups were determined using ANCOVA with age and sex as covariates. Out of 5,234 eligible participants over 2000–2006, there were 2,639 non-smoker participants, 1,419 ex-smokers, and 1,048 smokers. Within the previous four years, 435 participants became recent quitters and 205 starters. Comparing smoking and health status in year 4, non-smokers showed better scores than the other categories of ever smoking in all dimensions except in the vitality scale value, which was similar in non-smokers and in those smoking less than 15 cigarettes/day. Comparing changes in smoking and health in year 4, continuing smokers had statistically significant worse scores than non-smokers in general health, social functioning, role-emotional and mental health, whereas recent quitters showed statistically significant improvements in role-emotional and mental health over those who had continued smoking or those who became smokers. Our findings support a dose-response relationship between cigarette consumption and a worse quality of life in general and mental health in particular. They also support that changes in smoking have an impact on health

The increasing use of psychoactive substances among young people, has led to generate a
public health problem in the country, where intermediate cities like Yopal present great
challenges for the care and rehabilitation of this population, not to have sufficient technical and
economic resources to articulate a model of efficient care.
Therefore, the present research is registered as an academic effort to demonstrate the
social effects arising from the dismantling and ineffectiveness of the institutions involved in the
implementation of the route of care for consumers SPA in the municipality of Yopal.
Now, to prove this route care SPA in Yopal consumption will be analyzed, identifying
economic, social and family problems in public policy related to children and adolescents (2013
2023), in order to establish the scope of management around institutional care processes.
In this research study, which will have an explanatory character; because it is aimed at
meeting the social effects caused by the ineffectiveness and inefficiency of the route of care for
consumers in Yopal SPA; It is expected to propose a route restructured attention to social
problems regarding the municipality.
Given the results of the survey and interview, it can be inferred that the scope of
institutional management front the attention of young consumers of psychoactive substances is
limited to promotional campaigns and prevention, that although they are valid, fall short when
forward a rehabilitation process, because each institution addresses the subject from its
institutional guideline, however, everyone agrees addressing cases to the EPS to which is
affiliated the consumer.
XI
Now these referrals can be understood by institutional articulation, under the disparity in
attention mechanisms of the actors involved, as with EPS, which depend on various
administrative procedures.
In short, the dismantling of the health service companies, those that protect the rights of
children, and local government, has caused the whole route of care for cases of psychoactive
substances not effective, much less manage to generate the scope is intended to give each
municipal planning committee

The paradoxical signals of two TrkC receptor isoforms supports a rationale for novel therapeutic strategies in ALS
Full length TrkC (TrkC-FL) is a receptor tyrosine kinase whose mRNA can be spliced to a truncated TrkC.T1 isoform lacking the kinase domain. Neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) activates TrkC-FL to maintain motor neuron health and function and TrkC.T1 to produce neurotoxic TNF-α; hence resulting in opposing pathways. In mouse and human ALS spinal cord, the reduction of miR-128 that destabilizes TrkC.T1 mRNA results in up-regulated TrkC.T1 and TNF-α in astrocytes. We exploited conformational differences to develop an agonistic mAb 2B7 that selectively activates TrkC-FL, to circumvent TrkC.T1 activation. In mouse ALS,2B7 activates spinal cord TrkC-FL signals, improves spinal cord motor neuron phenotype and function, and significantly prolongs life-span. Our results elucidate biological paradoxes of receptor isoforms and their role in disease progression, validate the concept of selectively targeting conformational epitopes in naturally occurring isoforms, and may guide the development of pro-neuroprotective (TrkC-FL) and anti-neurotoxic (TrkC.T1) therapeutic strategies.Fil: Brahimi, Fouad. Streptomyces polyketides mediate bacteria–fungi interactions across soil environments
Although the interaction between prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms is crucial for the functioning of ecosystems, information about the processes driving microbial interactions within communities remains scarce. Here we show that arginine-derived polyketides (arginoketides) produced by Streptomyces species mediate cross-kingdom microbial interactions with fungi of the genera Aspergillus and Penicillium, and trigger the production of natural products. Arginoketides can be cyclic or linear, and a prominent example is azalomycin F produced by Streptomyces iranensis, which induces the cryptic orsellinic acid gene cluster in Aspergillus nidulans. Bacteria that synthesize arginoketides and fungi that decode and respond to this signal were co-isolated from the same soil sample. Genome analyses and a literature search indicate that arginoketide producers are found worldwide. Because, in addition to their direct impact, arginoketides induce a secondary wave of fungal natural products, they probably contribute to the wider structure and functioning of entire soil microbial communities
ACADEMIC RESEARCH PRODUCTIVITY BY DEPARTMENTS, FACULTAD DE CIENCIAS DE LA SALUD, UNIVERSIDAD DEL CAUCA, 2010-2016
Introduction: It is necessary to know the academic production of the Facultad Ciencias de la Salud for generating processes of feed-back and institutional accreditation, this is achieved through bibliometrics. The bibliometrics uses the scientific method to quantify the academic production resulting of research process. Methods: Cross-sectional bibliometric investigation that used as population the whole scientific production represented in the published articles on journals (online and paper) in 2010 to 2016 in the Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud.
