    Lithium carbonate accelerates the healing of apical periodontitis

    Apical periodontitis is a disease caused by bacterial invasions through the root canals. Our previous study reported that lithium chloride (LiCl) had a healing effect on apical periodontitis. The aim of this report is to investigate the healing properties and mechanism of lithium ion (Li+) for apical periodontitis using rat root canal treatment model. 10-week-old male Wistar rat’s mandibular first molars with experimentally induced apical periodontitis underwent root canal treatment and were applied lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) containing intracanal medicament. Base material of the medicament was used as a control. Subject teeth were scanned by micro-CT every week and the periapical lesion volume was evaluated. The lesion volume of Li2CO3 group was significantly smaller than that of the control group. Histological analysis showed that in Li2CO3 group, M2 macrophages and regulatory T cells were induced in the periapical lesion. In situ hybridization experiments revealed a greater expression of Col1a1 in Li2CO3 group compared with the control group. At 24 h after application of intracanal medicament, Axin2-positive cells were distributed in Li2CO3 group. In conclusion, Li2CO3 stimulates Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway and accelerate the healing process of apical periodontitis, modulating the immune system and the bone metabolism.Kagioka T., Itoh S., Hue M.T., et al.     Synchronous improvement in strength and ductility of biomedical Co–Cr–Mo alloys by unique low-temperature heat treatment

    The microstructure and tensile properties of Co–27Cr–6Mo (mass%) alloys heat-treated at 673–1373 K were studied. Lower elongation was observed after heat treatment at 1073 K due to formation of carbonitride precipitates. In contrast, when low-temperature heat treatment (LTHT) was applied at 673–873 K, both the ultimate tensile strength and elongation synchronously improved compared with the solution-treated alloy. Electron backscatter diffraction analysis for plastic-strained alloys and in situ X-ray diffraction analysis under stress-induced conditions revealed that the strain-induced martensitic transformation (SIMT) of the γ(fcc)-phase to ε(hcp)-phase during plastic deformation was suppressed by the LTHT. Stacking faults (thin ε-phase) were observed to collide in the LTHT alloys. The following mechanisms for the synchronous improvement in the tensile strength and elongation after LHTH are proposed. First, stacking faults with multiple variants were formed during LTHT. Then, the ε-phase of a single variant formed by SIMT during plastic deformation collides with preexisting multi-variant stacking faults formed during LTHT, increasing the tensile strength. In addition, the SIMT during plastic deformation is suppressed in the high-plastic-strain region by the collision. This decreases the total amount of ε-phase formed during plastic deformation, which improves the ductility. We demonstrated that LTHT of Co–Cr–Mo alloys effectively improves the performance and mechanical safety of spinal fixation implants, which often fracture because of fatigue cracking.Ueki K., Abe M., Ueda K., et al.     Cellular function of osteocytes in normal and αklotho-deficient mice

    During the last decade, osteocyte-derived factors i.e., sclerostin, dentin matrix protein-1, fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) that reduces serum phosphate concentration by mediating FGF receptor 1c/αklotho in the kidney, have been highlighted for osteocytes’ fine-turned regulation on bone remodeling and phosphate homeostasis. Osteocytes are interconnected through gap junctions between their cytoplasmic processes, and thereby, build upon the functional syncytia, referred to as the osteocytic lacunar-canalicular system (OLCS). Osteocytes appear to communicate surrounding osteocytes and osteoblasts by means of two possible pathways of molecular transport throughout the OLCS : One is a passageway of their cytoplasmic processes, and the other is a pericellular space in the osteocytic canaliculi. The regularly-oriented OLCS in mature compact bone appears to efficiently serve for molecular transport, mechanosensing and targeted bone remodeling that would erase microdamages in bone. In a disrupted signaling state of FGF23/αklotho, serum concentration of phosphate would be markedly-elevated. Despite highly-elevated serum phosphate, αklotho -deficient mice revealed defective mineralization in bone matrix. OLCS in αklotho -deficient mice were irregularly-distributed and the connectivity of cytoplasmic processes of osteocytes was very poor, so that osteocytes did not seem to form functional syncytia. Therefore, osteocytes’function cooperated with other bone cells, rather than serum concentration of calcium/phosphate, and this seems to play a central role in maintaining bone mineralization.     A Mobile, Multichannel, UWB Radar for Potential Ice Core Drill Site Identification in East Antarctica: Development and First Results

    We developed a high-performance, multichannel, ultra-wideband radar system for measurements of the base and interior of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. We designed the radar to be of high power (4000-W peak) yet portable and to be able to operate with 60-MHz bandwidth at a center frequency of 200 MHz, providing high sensitivity and fine vertical resolution relative to current technology. We used the radar to perform extensive measurements as a part of a multinational collaboration. We collected data onboard a tracked vehicle outfitted with an array of high-gain antennas. We sounded 2- to 3-km thick ice near Dome Fuji. Preliminary ice thickness data match those obtained via semicoincident measurements performed with a different surface-based pulse-modulated radar system operated during the same field campaign, as well as previous airborne measurements. In addition, we mapped internal reflection horizons with fine vertical resolution from 300 m below the ice surface to ~100 m above the bed. In this article, we provide a detailed overview of the radar instrument design, implementation, and field measurement setup. We present sample data to illustrate its capabilities and discuss how the data collected with it will be valuable for the assessment of promising drilling sites to recover ice cores that are 0.9-1.5 million years old

    Surrounding Gastric Mucosa Findings Facilitate Diagnosis of Gastric Neoplasm as Gastric Adenoma or Early Gastric Cancer

    Background and Aim. It is difficult to master the skill of discriminating gastric adenoma from early gastric cancer by conventional endoscopy or magnifying endoscopy combined with narrow-band imaging, because the colors and morphologies of these neoplasms are occasionally similar. We focused on the surrounding gastric mucosa findings in order to determine how to discriminate between early gastric cancer and gastric adenoma by analyzing the characteristics of the gastric background mucosa. Methods. We retrospectively examined 146 patients who underwent endoscopic submucosal dissection for gastric neoplasm between October 2009 and January 2015. The boundary of atrophic gastritis was classified endoscopically according to the Kimura-Takemoto classification system. Of 146 lesions, 63 early gastric cancers and 21 gastric adenomas were ultimately evaluated and assessed. Results. Almost all gastric adenomas were accompanied by open-type gastritis, whereas 47 and 16 early gastric cancers were accompanied by open-type and closed-type gastritis, respectively (p = 0.037). Conclusions. The evaluation of the boundary of atrophic gastritis associated with gastric neoplasms appears to be useful for discrimination between early gastric cancer and gastric adenoma. When gastric neoplasm is present in the context of surrounding localized gastric atrophy, gastric cancer is probable but not certain

    Objective : To examine diagnostic performance of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) test combined with baseline dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) in patients with a suspect of central adrenal insufficiency. Methods : Patients (n=215) requiring daily or intermittent hydrocortisone replacement, or no replacement were retrospectively checked with their peak cortisol after CRH test and baseline DHEA-S. Results : None of 106 patients with the peak cortisol ≥ 17.5 μg / dL after CRH test required replacement, and all 64 patients with the peak cortisol < 10.0 μg / dL required daily replacement. Among 8 patients with 10.0 μg / dL ≤ the peak cortisol < 17.5 μg / dL and baseline DHEA-S below the reference range, 6 patients required daily replacement and 1 patient was under intermittent replacement. Among 37 patients with 10.0 μg / dL ≤ the peak cortisol < 17.5 μg / dL and baseline DHEA-S within the reference range, 10 and 6 patients were under intermittent and daily replacement, respectively. Conclusions : No patients with the peak cortisol ≥ 17.5 μg / dL required hydrocortisone replacement, and all patients with the peak cortisol below 10.0 μg / dL required daily replacement. Careful clinical evaluation was required to determine requirement for replacement in patients with 10.0 μg / dL ≤ the peak cortisol < 17.5 μg / dL even in combination with baseline DHEA-S

    AbstractObjectivesThis study sought to examine left atrial (LA) mechanics and the prognostic impact of patients with echocardiographic findings of E/A ratio ≤0.75, deceleration time (DcT) of mitral E-wave >140 ms, but E/ε′ ≥10.BackgroundTraditional diastolic dysfunction (DD) grading system could not classify every patient into a specific group. We considered the group of patients with E/A ≤0.75, DcT >140 ms, but E/ε′ ≥10 (proposed new DD grade) as a new group in the DD grading system.MethodsA total of 1,362 consecutive patients were stratified according to the new DD grading system, and the LA volumes, strain, and strain rates were measured by 2-dimensional speckle-tracking analysis. All patients were followed up to determine cardiac death and major adverse cardiac events.ResultsAn E/A ≤0.75, DcT >140 ms, but E/ε′ ≥10 was observed in 227 patients (17%). LA volumes in patients with the new DD grade were between those of the impaired relaxation group and the pseudonormal group. LA strain of the new DD grade was similar to that of the pseudonormal group, whereas LA booster function was preserved as in the impaired relaxation group. During a mean follow-up of 3.0 ± 1.1 years, 25 patients had cardiac death and 61 had major adverse cardiac events. Event-free survival for major adverse cardiac events of the new DD grade was worse than that of the impaired relaxation group but similar to that of the pseudonormal group.ConclusionsThe new DD grade is frequently observed and has a prognosis similar to that of the pseudonormal group but significantly worse than that of the impaired relaxation group. However, LA booster function was maintained at the expense of LA volume enlargement. Thus, the new grade should be a distinct entity for routine DD grading

    The effect of slip variability on earthquake slip-length scaling

    There has been debate on whether average slip D in long ruptures should scale with rupture length L, or with rupture width W. This scaling discussion is equivalent to asking whether average stress drop Δσ, which is sometimes considered an intrinsic frictional property of a fault, is approximately constant over a wide range of earthquake sizes. In this paper, we examine slip-length scaling relations using a simplified 1-D model of spatially heterogeneous slip. The spatially heterogeneous slip is characterized by a stochastic function with a Fourier spectrum that decays as k^(−α), where k is the wavenumber and α is a parameter that describes the spatial smoothness of slip. We adopt the simple rule that an individual earthquake rupture consists of only one spatially continuous segment of slip (i.e. earthquakes are not generally separable into multiple disconnected segments of slip). In this model, the slip-length scaling relation is intimately related to the spatial heterogeneity of the slip; linear scaling of average slip with rupture length only occurs when α is about 1.5, which is a relatively smooth spatial distribution of slip. We investigate suites of simulated ruptures with different smoothness, and we show that faults with large slip heterogeneity tend to have higher D/L ratios than those with spatially smooth slip. The model also predicts that rougher faults tend to generate larger numbers of small earthquakes, whereas smooth faults may have a uniform size distribution of earthquakes. This simple 1-D fault model suggests that some aspects of stress drop scaling are a consequence of whatever is responsible for the spatial heterogeneity of slip in earthquakes

    We synthesized calothrixin B using our developed biomimetic method and derived N-alkyl-calothrixins A and B. The in vitro antimalarial activity of the calothrixin derivatives, including calothrixins A and B, against the Plasmodium falciparum FCR-3 strain was evaluated.
