    The Educational Function of Caricature and its Effect on the Students’ Educational Motivation and Satisfaction

    Preserving the students’ educational motivation and satisfaction of teaching methods has a considerable influence on their educational success. Therefore, finding effective strategies to enhance students’ educational motivation and satisfaction of teaching methods is considered as one of the most important educational priorities. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of utilizing the capabilities of caricature on the students’ educational motivation and satisfaction of the teaching methods. The participants were the students of Yazd Payame Noor University. Nineteen students participated in the learning program utilizing caricature through textbook and PowerPoint slides and 18 students took part in the instructional program based on the lecture. The course of “consistency” with the subject of “strength of the metal structures” was taught using the two mentioned approaches. The classes were randomly assigned to these educational programs. The data were collected in the two stages of pretest and posttest using the summarized version of Mac Innerni and Sinclaire standard questionnaire of educational motivation. Moreover, after the treatment, the students were asked several direct questions about their overall satisfaction from the educational programs. The data were analyzed using t-test, Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney statistical tests. The findings indicated that comparing the two approaches, teaching with utilization of caricature can enhance the students’ educational motivation and satisfaction of the teaching methods

    Evaluating the effect of a mixture of alcohol and acetic acid for otomycosis therapy

    Introduction and objective: Otomycosis is a fungal infection of external auditory meatus. The acute form of the disease causes secretion and pruritus. The usual prescribed medicines for otomycosis are topical clotrimazole 1, amphotericin B and otosporin. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of treatment with isopropyl alcohol and acetic acid for otomycosis. Materials and methods: In the present study 910 patients examined and those suspected to have otomycosis referred to medical mycology laboratory of Golabchi, Kashan. A questionnaire was also filled for each patient. Both direct and culture examinations were used to confirm otomycosis in the patients. Then the patients were treated with the mixture of isopropyl alcohol+acetic acid. Results: Out of 910 examined patients, 60 patients were suspected to have otomycosis and referred to medical mycology lab. Mycological examinations confirmed otomycosis in 52 patients (86.7). Most of the patients (78.8) were cured perfectly after therapy with the mixture of alcohol and acetic acid. After three weeks, in addition to elimination of clinical signs further smear showed no sign of disease. However in four patients there was a relapse of the disease. Conclusion: Due to therapeutic effect of the mixture of isopropyl alcohol and acetic acid for otomycosis, its low side effects and low rate of relapse, it is recommended to use this mixture for the treatment of otomycosis

    ESDA2010-24782 EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF CORRUGATED TUBES UNDER LATERAL LOADING

    ABSTRACT The protection of structures under impact loading often necessitates the need for energy absorbers; devices designed to absorb the impact energy in a controlled manner and hence, protect the structure under consideration. Thinwalled tubes are widely used as energy absorbers in various vehicles and moving parts. The objective of the present study is to investigate the energy absorption characteristic of tubes with corrugations in different geometries, in lateral direction. In order to produce corrugations, an innovative solution is introduced. Corrugations can be very easily generated on the surface of cylindrical aluminum tubes by stamping method. Corrugations with different wavelengths and amplitudes can be produced by this method. Experimental tests are conducted to study the effect of changing corrugation geometry (type and amplitude). Quasi-static tests are carried out whose results for lateral compression show that tubes with corrugation have a higher mean crushing force and this force is directly proportional to number of corrugations and their amplitude. Moreover, it is observed that corrugated tubes can absorb approximately four times more energy than tubes without corrugations, in the same size and weight. Finally, considering the experimental tests, corrugated tubes are shown to be more effective in lateral direction as an energy absorber, and they also exhibit desirable force-deflection responses which are important in the design of energy absorbing devices

    The epidemiology of Candida species isolated from urinary tract infections

    Candida spp. are members of a genus, including closely related fungal species that cause a variety of infections. Objectives: The aim of this study was the isolation of various Candida species from vulvovaginitis and urethra of patients in Neyshabur, Northeast Iran from 2013 to 2015. Methods: This descriptive-analytical and cross-sectional study was performed to identify Candida spp. causing vulvovaginitis and Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) at a referral laboratory in Neyshabur district, Khorasan Razavi Province. A total of 451 vaginal and midstream urine samples were collected. Ten micro-liters of each specimen was cultured on CHROM agar plates and then incubated at 37°C for 24 to 48 hours, aerobically. Candida species were identified based on colony morphology, germ tube production and micro-morphology on corn meal agar including 1% Tween 80. Results: The mean age of the patients was 34.7_16.3. Candida albicans was the predominant species isolated. Moreover, age groups of 21 to 30 and 0 to 1 years were the most and the least infected individuals. Moreover, Candida spp. were significantly morecommon in females compared to males (P value 103. Conclusions: In this study, C. albicans was the most common species isolated from patients with vulvovaginitis and UTI, and significantly more common amongst females compared to males. The prevalence of candida spp. had significantly declined from 2013 to 2015. Moreover, the candida spp. counts were mostly higher than 103cfu/mL

    The benefits of folic acid-modified gold nanoparticles in CT-based molecular imaging: radiation dose reduction and image contrast enhancement

    X-ray computed tomography (CT) requires an optimal compromise between image quality and patient dose. While high image quality is an important requirement in CT, the radiation dose must be kept minimal to protect the patients from ionizing radiation-associated risks. The use of probes based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) along with active targeting ligands for specific recognition of cancer cells may be one of the balanced solutions. Herein, we report the effect of folic acid (FA)-modified AuNP as a targeted nanoprobe on the contrast enhancement of CT images as well as its potential for patient dose reduction. For this purpose, nasopharyngeal KB cancer cells overexpressing FA receptors were incubated with AuNPs with and without FA modification and imaged in a CT scanner with the following X-ray tube parameters: peak tube voltage of 130�KVp, and tube current�time products of 60, 90, 120, 160 and 250�mAs. Moreover, in order to estimate the radiation dose to which the patient was exposed during a head CT protocol, the CT dose index (CTDI) value was measured by an X-ray electrometer by changing the tube current�time product. Raising the tube current�time product from 60 to 250�mAs significantly increased the absorbed dose from 18�mGy to 75�mGy. This increase was not associated with a significant enhancement of the image quality of the KB cells. However, an obvious increase in image brightness and CT signal intensity (quantified by Hounsfield units HU) were observed in cells exposed to nanoparticles without any increase in the mAs product or radiation dose. Under the same Au concentration, KB cells exposed to FA-modified AuNPs had significantly higher HU and brighter CT images than those of the cells exposed to AuNPs without FA modification. In conclusion, FA-modified AuNP can be considered as a targeted CT nanoprobe with the potential for dose reduction by keeping the required mAs product as low as possible while enhancing image contrast. © 2017 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Grou

    Cardiac abnormalities due to multisystem inflammatory syndrome temporally associated with Covid-19 among children: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    Background: Cardiac defects due to multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) have been abundantly reported leading high morbidity among children affected by Covid-19. We aimed to systematically assess the incidence of such cardiac abnormalities due to MIS-C in children suffering Covid-19. Methods: The manuscript databases including Medline, Web of knowledge, Google scholar, Scopus, and Cochrane were deeply searched by the two blinded investigators for all eligible studies based on the relevant keywords. The risk of bias for each study was assessed according to QUADAS-2 tool. Statistical analysis was performed using the Comprehensive Meta Analysis (CMA) software. Results: In final, 21 articles (including 916 children) were eligible for the final analysis that all yielded good quality and none of the citation was determined to have high risk of bias. Considering studies focusing different cardiac abnormalities related to MIS-C yielded a pooled prevalence of 38.0 for significant left ventricular dysfunction, 20.0 for coronary aneurism or dilatation, 28.1 for ECG abnormalities or cardiac arrhythmias, 33.3 for raised serum troponin level and 43.6 for raised proBNP/BNP level. Conclusion: Although cardiac abnormalities among children suffering Covid-19 are uncommon, in the context of the MIS-C can be common and therefore potentially serious and life threatening. © 202

    Energy limitation of cyanophage development : implications for marine carbon cycling

It is thought that abundant co-occurring viruses play an important role in regulating population dynamics of cyanobacteria and thus the cycling of carbon in the oceans. Despite this, little is known about how viral infections ‘play-out’ in the environment, particularly whether infections are resource or energy limited. Photoautotrophic organisms represent an ideal model to test this since available energy is modulated by the incoming light intensity through photophosphorylation. Therefore, we exploited phototrophy of the environmentally relevant marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus and monitored growth of a cyanobacterial virus (cyanophage). We found that light intensity has a marked effect on cyanophage infection dynamics, but that this is not manifest by a change in DNA synthesis. Instead, cyanophage development appears energy limited for the synthesis of proteins required during late infection. We posit that acquisition of auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs) involved in light-dependent photosynthetic reactions acts to overcome this limitation. We show that cyanophages actively modulate expression of these AMGs in response to light intensity and provide evidence that such regulation may be facilitated by a novel mechanism involving light-dependent splicing of a group I intron in a photosynthetic AMG. Altogether, our data offers a mechanistic link between diurnal changes in irradiance and observed community level responses in metabolism, i.e., through an irradiance-dependent, viral-induced release of dissolved organic matter (DOM).Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
