Self-cleaned Solar Cells with Super-Hydrophobic Photonic Nano-structures
This work has investigated the light scattering effect and self-cleaning (i.e. water hydrophobicity) properties of various micro/nano-structured front coatings for solar energy applications. This was done through enhancement of surface texturing, following a colloidal lithography methodology, which comprised the reactive ion etching of the material with a pre-deposited mask of a self-assembled monolayer of polystyrene microspheres. This process culminated in the formation of a surface patterned with micro structures.
Experimentally, the maximum water contact angles obtained were 140° and 167°, for PET and parylene-C materials, respectively. The results of scanning electron microscopy suggest the wettability properties change due to variations in surface roughness at micro and nano scales. Then, through x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, that change was associated with variations in surface chemistry. Droplet state transition from Wenzel state to Cassie-Baxter state for parylene was analytically demonstrated through examination of water advancing and receding contact angles.
It was observed that increasing plasma exposure results in an increase of reflectance and in a slight decrease of total transmittance. However, diffuse transmittance increased from 5% and 2% to above 60% for PET and parylene, respectively, which reveals potential for light trapping (via optical path length amplification). These changes are directly related to surface roughness modification and they intensify with colloidal lithography.
For proof-of-concept, a-Si solar cells were fabricated in superstrate (p-i-n) and substrate (n-i-p) configurations to evaluate the performance of the textured parylene as a photonic-structured encapsulant. The measured devices showed a photocurrent ( ) enhancement up to 16%, in the substrate configuration, due to the light trapping effects of the photonic-structured parylene. In addition, the structured parylene layer also acted as a pronounced superhydrophobic surface which strengthens the device robustness in outdoor operation
LiDAR: reconfigurable hardware based data acquisition
Dissertação de mestrado integrado em Engenharia Eletrónica Industrial e Computadores (área de especialização em Sistemas Embebidos e Computadores)There is an expected increase in the demand for Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) over the next
decade, incited by regulatory and consumer interest in safety applications that protect drivers and reduce
accidents [1]. Even though ADAS applications are still beginning, both the OEMs and their suppliers are
realizing that they could become one of the essential characteristics differentiating the various automotive
brands, consequently, one of their most important revenue sources. Furthermore, the technologies used
in ADAS could be used in the future to create fully autonomous vehicles, which are now becoming a major
focus of research and development.
There are three main sensor solutions used in ADAS. Firstly, there are optical sensors and camera
based-solutions. These are the most versatile and cost-efficient solutions. However, they are easily affected
by poor weather and other environmental hazards. Furthermore, they require complex software algorithms
to recognize objects [1]. The second solution incorporates short and long range Radars for determining the
distance, speed, and direction of objects. These sensors work better than the others in adverse weather
conditions. Nonetheless there is typically a compromise between the measurement range and angle [1].
The last type of solution involves using LiDAR systems, which use laser pulses to scan the surroundings
and generate a complete and precise three-dimensional image of the environment. The LiDAR is less
sensitive to light and weather conditions than optical systems and provides the location of the surrounding
objects directly. Due to the ever-growing use of ADAS, there is a need to develop a more advanced LiDAR
sensor. To answer that need and to overcome some of the limitations of the current LiDAR sensors, the
Chassis Systems Control of the Bosch Group is developing an automotive LiDAR, and the current Master’s
thesis is integrated in the project.
In this Master’s thesis, an Acquisition System for Bosch’s LiDAR sensor was developed. For measuring
the Time-of-Flight of the laser pulses of the LiDAR, to do so multiple TDC Peripherals were developed in an
FPGA platform. The measurement precision of the developed Acquisition System varies between 232.17
Além disso, as tecnologias
Primeiro, existem as soluções baseadas
médio de 207.47 ps.This work is supported by European Structural and Investment Funds in the FEDER component,

Orohanditest: A new method for orofacial damage assessment
Background: Currently, orofacial sequelae are recognized as very influential on the quality-of-life for a victim of orofacial damage. Therefore, correct forensic assessment for indenisation purposes is mandatory. However, orofacial damage is frequently reduced to organic components, which results in a forensic assessment process, which are inadequate. This study aims to improve the orofacial damage assessment through the development of an auxiliary tool, the orohanditest.
Materials and Methods: A preliminary inventory was constructed, using relevant bibliographic elements and retrospective study of forensic examinations reports concerning orofacial trauma. This inventory was then utilized in the assessment of 265 orofacial trauma victims for validation. Validity was studied by analyzing the internal construct validity (exploring factorial validity and assessing internal consistency) and the external construct validity (assessing convergent validity and discriminant validity). The level of significance was defined as P < 0.05.
Results: The final inventory (orohanditest) was comprised of the three components of body (8 items), functions (10 items) and situations (24 items), which were found to be statistically reliable and valid for assessment. The final score (orofacial damage coefficient) reflects the orofacial damage severity.
Conclusion: Orohanditest provides a reliable, precise, and complete orofacial damage description and quantification. Therefore, this method can be useful as an auxiliary tool in the orofacial damage assessment process

A actual Denominação de Origem (DO) Trás-os-Montes, sub-região Planalto
impressa a marca desta dupla natureza” (Taborda 1932)
aquimaris e Aeromonas salmonicida.
Amphibian populations have declined over the past few years due to numerous
factors such as habitat loss, contamination / pollution and one of the most
important, diseases. These losses also result in the loss of genetic diversity of
the species, which may compromise their fitness and ability to adapt. Taking all
these factors into account, it is necessary to preserve amphibian populations,
regardless of being found in contaminated, pristine, rural or urban sites. Given
that urban amphibian populations can be an important source for genetic
diversity of the species and that they are exposed, such as populations of
natural areas, to pathogens, there is a need for assess and protect them
against pathogenic agents. Generally, this protection is conferred in an innate
way by skin structures, which are part of your immune system. These are
granular glands responsible for the production of peptidic compounds capable
of inhibiting the growth of pathogens. In addition, the microbiota in the skin
stimulates and complements the activity of these secretions. Based on these
facts, this work had as objectives: i) to evaluate how factors such as
seasonality (spring and autumn) and gender can influence the cultivable
microbiota of Pelophylax perezi skin in urban areas; ii) assess the ability of the
bacterial skin isolates to present antimicrobial activity and iii) evaluate the
potential of bacterial isolates with antimicrobial activity as potential probiotic
agents. The obtained results showed differences between sites at the level of
the isolated species, with few common species between sites. In addition, it
was evidenced that in a total of 120 isolates, 19 had antimicrobial activity
against Bacyllus aquimaris and Aeromonas salmonicida. There were also
differences in antimicrobial activity between seasons, with a higher number of
species with antimicrobial activity in the autumn. Of the isolates with
antimicrobial activity, the three with the highest activity, Pseudomonas
rhizosphaerae, Pseudomonas fluorescens and Bacillus mycoides were
selected for the second phase of the study, in which their potential action as
probiotic agents was evaluated. After in vivo exposure of the tadpoles to the
probiotics, along with A. salmonicida, these were found to decrease the
mortality of tadpoles as well as to decrease the peroxidative damage, when
compared to the values obtained from the exposure to the pathogen. From the
three probiotics B. mycoides revealed to be the one with the greatest capacity
to stimulate the antioxidant enzymes, being the probiotic agent with the lowest
values of peroxidative damage
