Controlling anomalous stresses in soft field-responsive systems
We report a new phenomenon occurring in field-responsive suspensions:
shear-induced anomalous stresses. Competition between a rotating field and a
shear flow originates a multiplicity of anomalous stress behaviors in
suspensions of bounded dimers constituted by induced dipoles. The great variety
of stress regimes includes non-monotonous behaviors, multi-resonances, negative
viscosity effect and blockades. The reversibility of the transitions between
the different regimes and the self-similarity of the stresses make this
phenomenon controllable and therefore applicable to modify macroscopic
properties of soft condensed matter phasesComment: 5 pages, 6 figures, submitted to PR
Generalized Stirling Permutations and Forests: Higher-Order Eulerian and Ward Numbers
We define a new family of generalized Stirling permutations that can be interpreted in terms of ordered trees and forests. We prove that the number of generalized Stirling permutations with a fixed number of ascents is given by a natural three-parameter generalization of the well-known Eulerian numbers. We give the generating function for this new class of numbers and, in the simplest cases, we find closed formulas for them and the corresponding row polynomials. By using a non-trivial involution our generalized Eulerian numbers can be mapped onto a family of generalized Ward numbers, forming a Riordan inverse pair, for which we also provide a combinatorial interpretation. We are indebted to Alan Sokal for his participation in the early stages of this work, his encouragement, and useful suggestions later on. Bivariate generating functions for a class of linear recurrences: General structure
We consider Problem 6.94 posed in the book Concrete Mathematics by Graham, Knuth, and Patashnik, and solve it by using bivariate exponential generating functions. The family of recurrence relations considered in the problem contains many cases of combinatorial interest for particular choices of the six parameters that define it. We give a complete classification of the partial differential equations satisfied by the exponential generating functions, and solve them in all cases. We also show that the recurrence relations defining the combinatorial numbers appearing in this problem display an interesting degeneracy that we study in detail. Finally, we obtain for all cases the corresponding univariate row generating polynomials. We are indebted to Alan Sokal for his participation in the early stages of this work, and his encouragement and useful suggestions later on. A highly-collimated SiO jet in the HH212 protostellar outflow
We mapped the HH212 Class 0 outflow in SiO(2--1, 5--4) and continuum using
the PdBI in its extended configurations. The unprecedented angular resolution
(down to 0.34") allows accurate comparison with a new, deep H2 image obtained
at the VLT. The SiO emission is confined to a highly-collimated bipolar jet
(width 0.35") along the outflow axis. The jet can be traced down to within 500
AU of the protostar, in a region that is heavily obscured in H2 images. Where
both species are detected, SiO shows the same overall kinematics and structure
as H2, indicating that both molecules are tracing the same material. We find
that the high-velocity SiO gas near the protostar is not tracing a wide-angle
wind but is already confined to a flow inside a narrow cone of half-opening
angle < 6 deg.Comment: Astronomy and Astrophysics Letter, in pres
Rigged Hilbert Space Approach to the Schrodinger Equation
It is shown that the natural framework for the solutions of any Schrodinger
equation whose spectrum has a continuous part is the Rigged Hilbert Space
rather than just the Hilbert space. The difficulties of using only the Hilbert
space to handle unbounded Schrodinger Hamiltonians whose spectrum has a
continuous part are disclosed. Those difficulties are overcome by using an
appropriate Rigged Hilbert Space (RHS). The RHS is able to associate an
eigenket to each energy in the spectrum of the Hamiltonian, regardless of
whether the energy belongs to the discrete or to the continuous part of the
spectrum. The collection of eigenkets corresponding to both discrete and
continuous spectra forms a basis system that can be used to expand any physical
wave function. Thus the RHS treats discrete energies (discrete spectrum) and
scattering energies (continuous spectrum) on the same footing.Comment: 27 RevTex page
Molecular Mechanism and Potential Targets for Blocking HPV-Induced Lesion Development
Persistent infection with high-risk HPV is the etiologic agent associated with the development of cervical cancer (CC) development. However, environmental, social, epidemiological, genetic, and host factors may have a joint influence on the risk of disease progression. Cervical lesions caused by HPV infection can be removed naturally by the host immune response and only a small percentage may progress to cancer; thus, the immune response is essential for the control of precursor lesions and CC. We present a review of recent research on the molecular mechanisms that allow HPV-infected cells to evade immune surveillance and potential targets of molecular therapy to inhibit tumor immune escape
Hubble Space Telescope Near-Infrared Snapshot Survey of 3CR Radio Source Counterparts at Low Redshift
We present newly acquired images of the near-infrared counterpart of 3CR radio sources. All the sources were selected to have a redshift of less than 0.3 to allow us to obtain the highest spatial resolution. The observations were carried out as a snapshot program using the Near-Infrared Camera and Multiobject Spectrograph (NICMOS) on-board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). In this paper we describe 69 radio galaxies observed for the first time with NICMOS during HST cycle 13. All the objects presented here are elliptical galaxies. However, each of them has unique characteristics such as close companions, dust lanes, unresolved nuclei, arc-like features, globular clusters and jets clearly visible from the images or with basic galaxy subtraction
Baybayin Character Instance Detection
The Philippine Government recently passed the "National Writing System Act,"
which promotes using Baybayin in Philippine texts. In support of this effort to
promote the use of Baybayin, we present a computer vision system which can aid
individuals who cannot easily read Baybayin script. In this paper, we survey
the existing methods of identifying Baybayin scripts using computer vision and
machine learning techniques and discuss their capabilities and limitations.
Further, we propose a Baybayin Optical Character Instance Segmentation and
Classification model using state-of-the-art Convolutional Neural Networks
(CNNs) that detect Baybayin character instances in an image then outputs the
Latin alphabet counterparts of each character instance in the image. Most
existing systems are limited to character-level image classification and often
misclassify or not natively support characters with diacritics. In addition,
these existing models often have specific input requirements that limit it to
classifying Baybayin text in a controlled setting, such as limitations in
clarity and contrast, among others. To our knowledge, our proposed method is
the first end-to-end character instance detection model for Baybayin, achieving
a mAP50 score of 93.30%, mAP50-95 score of 80.50%, and F1-Score of 84.84%
The Hilbert space of Chern-Simons theory on the cylinder. A Loop Quantum Gravity approach
As a laboratory for loop quantum gravity, we consider the canonical
quantization of the three-dimensional Chern-Simons theory on a noncompact space
with the topology of a cylinder. Working within the loop quantization
formalism, we define at the quantum level the constraints appearing in the
canonical approach and completely solve them, thus constructing a gauge and
diffeomorphism invariant physical Hilbert space for the theory. This space
turns out to be infinite dimensional, but separable.Comment: Minor changes and some references added. Latex, 16 pages, 1 figur
