The aim of this paper is to establish a relationship between the creation of the first collective “heteronym” of Portuguese literature (a fictitious poet with his own work and biography, behind whose name several empirical authors hide), Carlos Fradique Mendes, and the functioning of irony. On the one hand, I discuss the relationship of irony with Portuguese Romanticism and Eça de Queirós’s Realism. The aim is to show that, though Fradique Mendes was an inheritor of Romanticism, he was instrumental in the 70s Generation’s break-away from that movement. And also that the innovative aspects of this true literary phenomenon —which are obvious not only in the poetic issues he raised, but also in the poems he signed— filled the gap which used to exist in the Portuguese literary scene and which his creation aimed to make up for. The Portuguese literary scene lacked a Satanic poet and themes that would only be developed in the poetry of the late 19th century, such as the theme of the city or reflections on the poetic act itself rather than a mere repetition of topics. On the other hand, through an analysis and commentary of some poems important aspects of theoretical discussion can be seen.peerReviewe

Allergen profile of soluble protein fraction of pollen from Quercus rotundifolia

Grasses and olive are the most relevant allergenic species in the Alentejo region. However, aggravation of allergic symptoms has been reported in the early spring, before grass and olive pollen seasons. Quercus pollen is the most abundant pollen type in the early spring in Alentejo, nonetheless its allergen profile has not yet been evaluated. The aim of this work was to characterize the allergen profile of pollen from Quercus rotundifolia the most representative species showing pollination in April, prior to the main pollen season in Alentejo. Pollen from Quercus rotundifolia and Olea europaea was extracted with ammonium bicarbonate buffer, lyophilized and stored at -80ºC until analysis. Extract from Quercus ilex pollen was kindly offered by Bial. Protein content was determined by the Bradford method. SDS-PAGE followed by western blot, using allergic patient sera (obtained from the Hospital do Espírito Santo de Évora – HESE), were performed to evaluate the allergen profile of the pollen. Protein profile of Q. rotundifolia has shown several bands in the Mr 10-94 KDa, mostly overlapping with Q. ilex. Western blot have shown 9 immunoreactive bands, identified in the Mr (7.5, 11.7-12.6, 18.7-19.0 and 20.9-23.6, 29.2-33.3, 40.9, 51.7, 75.9 and 83.7 KDa). Protein profile according to the pI showed four immunoreactive bands in the pI range 4.0-6.1. Cross-reactivity between Q. rotundifolia and O. europaea was found. These results evidenced allergens found in Q. rotundifolia pollen. It also shows that protein profile of Q. rotundifolia and Q. ilex are mostly alike suggesting that similarities in allergen profile are expected. Moreover, cross–reactivity between Q. rotundifolia and O. europaea was found which probably contributes for aggravation of pollinosis in the early spring

Linear relationships between partition coefficients of different organic compounds and proteins in aqueous two-phase systems of various polymer and ionic compositions

Analysis of the partition coefficients of small organic compounds and proteins in different aqueous two-phase systems under widely varied ionic compositions shows that logarithms of partition coefficients for any three compounds or proteins or two organic compounds and one protein are linearly interrelated, although for protein(s) there are ionic compositions when the linear fit does not hold. It is suggested that the established interrelationships are due to cooperativity of different types of solute–solvent interactions in aqueous media. This assumption is confirmed by analysis of distribution coefficients of various drugs in octanol-buffer systems with varied ionic compositions of the buffer. Analysis of the partition coefficients characterizing distribution of variety of drugs between blood and different tissues of rats in vivo reported in the literature showed that the above assumption is correct and enabled us to identify the tissues with the components of which the drug(s) may engage in presumably direct interactions. It shows that the suggested assumption is valid for even complex biological systems.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Measuring societal awareness of the rural agrarian landscape: indicators and scale issues

    Get PDF
The work presented in this report is part of the effort to define the landscape state and diversity indicator in the frame of COM (2006) 508 “Development of agri-environmental indicators for monitoring the integration of environmental concerns into the common agricultural policy”. The Communication classifies the indicators according to their level of development, which, for the landscape indicator is “in need of substantial improvements in order to become fully operational”. For this reason a full re-definition of the indicator has been carried out, following the initial proposal presented in the frame of the IRENA operation (“Indicator Reporting on the Integration of Environmental Concerns into Agricultural Policy”). The new proposal for the landscape state and diversity indicator is structured in three components: the first concerns the degree of naturalness, the second landscape structure, the third the societal appreciation of the rural landscape. While the first two components rely on a strong bulk of existing literature, the development of the methodology has made evident the need for further analysis of the third component, which is based on a newly proposed top-down approach. This report presents an in-depth analysis of such component of the indicator, and the effort to include a social dimension in large scale landscape assessment.JRC.H.4-Monitoring Agricultural Resource

Hydrogen bond arrangement is shown to differ in coexisting phases of aqueous two-phase systems

    Get PDF
Analysis by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy shows that each coexisting phase in aqueous two-phase systems has a different arrangement of hydrogen bonds. Specific arrangements vary for systems formed by different solutes. The hydrogen bond arrangement is shown to correlate with differences in hydrophobic and electrostatic properties of the different phases of five specific systems, four formed by two polymers and one by a single polymer and salt. The results presented here suggest that the arrangement of hydrogen bonds may be an important factor in phase separation.P.P.M. acknowledges University of Aveiro, CICECO-Aveiro Institute of Materials for funding in the framework of the project UIDB/5011/2020 and UIDP/50011/2020, financed by national funds through the FCT/MEC contract foreseen in the numbers 4, 5, and 6 of the article 23, of the Decree-Law 57/2016, of August 29, changed by Law 57/2017, of July 19.publishe

It is estimated that about 10 million people are infected with Trypanosoma cruzi worldwide, mostly in Latin America and more than 25 million are at risk of acquiring this infection in endemic areas. Dogs are an important reservoir for this pathogen and thus, considered a risk factor for human populations. This report describes one case of Chagas disease in a dog from Cuiabá, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The diagnosis was obtained by direct examination of trypomastigote forms in blood smears. Amastigotes forms were visualized in microscopy of the bone marrow, lymph nodes, kidneys, liver and brain. The T. cruzi (ZIII) infection was confirmed by Polymerase Chain Reaction, and sequencing. The animal presented multisystemic failure and died. Although acute Chagas disease in humans is not reported in Cuiabá, this is the first report of a canine case in this region. This case represents a warning, to health professionals and authorities, to the possibility of transmission of this zoonosis in Cuiabá
