Singularities of improper affine spheres and surfaces of constant Gaussian curvature

    Get PDF
We study the equation for improper (parabolic) affine spheres from the view point of contact geometry and provide the generic classification of singularities appearing in geometric solutions to the equation as well as their duals. We also show the results for surfaces of constant Gaussian curvatureand for developable surfaces. In particular we confirm that generic singularities appearing in such a surface are just cuspidal edges and swallowtails.Comment: 20 pages, 1 figure

Stationary Josephson effect in a weak-link between nonunitary triplet superconductors

    Get PDF
A stationary Josephson effect in a weak-link between misorientated nonunitary triplet superconductors is investigated theoretically. The non-self-consistent quasiclassical Eilenberger equation for this system has been solved analytically. As an application of this analytical calculation, the current-phase diagrams are plotted for the junction between two nonunitary bipolar ff-wave superconducting banks. A spontaneous current parallel to the interface between superconductors has been observed. Also, the effect of misorientation between crystals on the Josephson and spontaneous currents is studied. Such experimental investigations of the current-phase diagrams can be used to test the pairing symmetry in the above-mentioned superconductors.Comment: 6 pages and 6 figure

Nonvanishing Local Moment in Triplet Superconductors

The Kondo effect in a px+ipyp_x + {\rm i} p_y-wave superconductor is studied by applying the Wilson's numerical renormalization group method. In this type of superconductor with a full energy gap like a s-wave one, the ground state is always a spin doublet, while a local spin is shrunk by the Kondo effect. The calculated magnetic susceptibility indicates that the spin of the ground state is generated by the orbital effect of the px+ipyp_x + {\rm i} p_y-wave Cooper pairs. The effect of spin polarization of the triplet superconductor is also discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to be published in J. Phys. Soc. Jp

Variable Accretion Rates and Fluffy First Stars

We combine the output of hydrodynamical simulations of Population III star cluster formation with stellar evolution models, and calculate the evolution of protostars experiencing variable mass accretion rates due to interactions within a massive disk. We find that the primordial protostars are extended 'fluffy' objects for the bulk of their pre-main-sequence lifetimes. Accretion luminosity feedback from such objects is high, but as shown in previous work, has a minimal effect on the star cluster. The extended radii of the protostars, combined with the observation of close encounters in the simulations, suggests that mergers will occur in such systems. Furthermore, mass transfer between close protostellar binaries with extended radii could lead to massive tight binaries, which are a possible progenitor of gamma ray bursts.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. Bacterial contamination of anesthesia machines’ internal breathing-circuit-systems

    Get PDF
Background: Bacterial contamination of anesthesia breathing machines and their potential hazard for pulmonary infection and cross-infection among anesthetized patients has been an infection control issue since the 1950s. Disposable equipment and bacterial filters have been introduced to minimize this risk. However, the machines’ internal breathing-circuit-system has been considered to be free of micro-organisms without providing adequate data supporting this view. The aim of the study was to investigate if any micro-organisms can be yielded from used internal machines’ breathing-circuit-system. Based on such results objective reprocessing intervals could be defined

Spin and orbital effects of Cooper pairs coupled to a single magnetic impurity

The Kondo effect strongly depends on spin and orbital degrees of freedom of unconventional superconductivity. We focus on the Kondo effect in the px+ipyp_x + i p_y-wave and dx2y2+idxyd_{x^2 - y^2} + i d_{xy}-wave superconductors to compare the magnetic properties of the spin-triplet and spin-singlet Cooper pairs. The difference appears when both of the paired electrons couple to a local spin directly. For the px+ipyp_x + i p_y-wave, the ground state is always a spin doublet for a Simp=1/2S_{\rm imp} = 1/2 local spin, and it is always a spin singlet for Simp=1S_{\rm imp} = 1. The latter is due to uniaxial spin anisotropy of the triplet Cooper pair. For the dx2y2+idxyd_{x^2 - y^2} + i d_{xy}-wave, the interchange of ground states occurs, which resembles a competition between the Kondo effect and the superconducting energy gap in s-wave superconductors. Thus the internal degrees of freedom of Cooper pairs give a variety to the Kondo effect.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, RevTex, to be published in Phys. Rev.

Phase diagram of UPt3_3 in the E1gE_{1g} model

The phase diagram of the unconventional superconductor UPt3_3 is explained under the long-standing hypothesis that the pair wavefunction belongs to the E1gE_{1g} representation of the point group. The main objection to this theory has been that it disagrees with the experimental phase diagram when a field is applied along the c-axis. By a careful analysis of the free energy this objection is shown to be incorrect. This singlet theory also explains the unusual anisotropy in the upper critical field curves, often thought to indicate a triplet pair function.Comment: 11 pages, Revtex, 2 figures (uuencoded, gzip'ed Postscript

Bound states at the interface between antiferromagnets and superconductors

We present a detailed theoretical investigation of interfaces and junctions involving itinerant antiferromagnets. By solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations with a tight-binding model on a square lattice, we study both the self-consistent order parameter fields proximate to interfaces between antiferromagnets (AF) and s-wave (sSC) or d-wave (dSC) superconductors, the dispersion of quasiparticle subgap states at interfaces and interlayers, and the local density of states (LDOS) as a function of distance from the interface. In addition, we present the quasiclassical approach to interfaces and junctions involving itinerant antiferromagnets developed in an earlier paper. Analytical results are in excellent agreement with what we obtain numerically. Strong effects of pair breaking in the presence of low-energy interface Andreev states are found in particular for AF/sSC interfaces when interface potentials are not too high. Potential barriers induce additional extrema in the dispersive quasiparticle spectra with corresponding peaks in the LDOS. Discrete quasiparticle dispersive levels in AF - normal metal (N) - AF systems are found to strongly depend on the misorientation angle of the magnetizations in the two antiferromagnets.Comment: 21 pp, 21 postscript figures, submitted to Phys. Comparative electron temperature measurements of Thomson scattering and electron cyclotron emission diagnostics in TCABR plasmas

    Get PDF
We present the first simultaneous measurements of the Thomson scattering and electron cyclotron emission radiometer diagnostics performed at TCABR tokamak with Alfven wave heating. The Thomson scattering diagnostic is an upgraded version of the one previously installed at the ISTTOK tokamak, while the electron cyclotron emission radiometer employs a heterodyne sweeping radiometer. For purely Ohmic discharges, the electron temperature measurements from both diagnostics are in good agreement. Additional Alfven wave heating does not affect the capability of the Thomson scattering diagnostic to measure the instantaneous electron temperature, whereas measurements from the electron cyclotron emission radiometer become underestimates of the actual temperature values.
