    Hyperboloidal slicing approach to quasinormal mode expansions: The Reissner-Nordström case

    International audienceWe study quasinormal modes of black holes, with a focus on resonant (or quasinormal mode) expansions, in a geometric frame based on the use of conformal compactifications together with hyperboloidal foliations of spacetime. Specifically, this work extends the previous study of Schwarzschild in this geometric approach to spherically symmetric asymptotically flat black-hole spacetimes, in particular Reissner-Nordström. The discussion involves, first, the nontrivial technical developments needed to address the choice of appropriate hyperboloidal slices in the extended setting as well as the generalization of the algorithm determining the coefficients in the expansion of the solution in terms of the quasinormal modes. In a second stage, we discuss how the adopted framework provides a geometric insight into the origin of regularization factors needed in Leaver’s Cauchy-based foliations, as well as into the discussion of quasinormal modes in the extremal black-hole limit

    Third-generation cholecystectomy by natural orifices: transgastric and transvesical combined approach (with video)

    BACKGROUND:An isolated transgastric port has some limitations in performing transluminal endoscopic cholecystectomy. However, transvesical access to the peritoneal cavity has recently been reported to be feasible and safe.OBJECTIVE:To assess the feasibility and the technical benefits of transgastric and transvesical combined approach to overcome the limitations of isolated transgastric ports.DESIGN:We created a transgastric and transvesical combined approach to perform cholecystectomy in 7 consecutive anesthetized female pigs. The transgastric access was achieved after perforation and dilation of the gastric wall with a needle knife and with a balloon, respectively. Under cystoscopic control, an ureteral catheter, a guidewire, and a dilator of the ureteral sheath were used to place a transvesical 5-mm overtube into the peritoneal cavity. By using a gastroscope positioned transgastrically and a ureteroscope positioned transvesically, we carried out cholecystectomy in all animals.RESULTS:Establishment of transvesical and transgastric accesses took place without complications. Under a carbon dioxide pneumoperitoneum controlled by the transvesical port, gallbladder identification, cystic duct, and artery exposure were easily achieved in all cases. Transvesical gallbladder grasping and manipulation proved to be particularly valuable to enhance gastroscope-guided dissection. With the exclusion of 2 cases where mild liver-surface hemorrhage and bile leak secondary to the sliding of cystic clips occurred, all remaining cholecystectomies were carried out without incidents.LIMITATIONS:Once closure of the gastric hole proved to be unreliable when using endoclips, the animals were euthanized; necropsy was performed immediately after the surgical procedure.CONCLUSIONS:A transgastric and transvesical combined approach is feasible, and it was particularly useful to perform a cholecystectomy through exclusive natural orifices

    Economic History and History of Economics: Complementary Approaches to Portuguese Economic Development

    This chapter focuses on how the problems of economic development were addressed by the Portuguese historiography of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The ensuing discussion benefits from the simultaneous consideration of two historiographical domains that complement each other: economic history and the history of economics. On the one hand, there are the authors and texts of economic history that seek to describe the facts and circumstances related to the functioning and dynamics of economic reality, for a given period or succession of periods, in order to establish evolutionary trends. On the other hand, there are the authors and texts of the history of economics that seek to adopt analytical forms (principles and laws) and doctrinal and programmatic frameworks (visions and ideologies) aimed at providing explanatory meaning to the observed economic changes, phenomena and regularities. A true understanding of the important issues pertaining to Portuguese economic development is to be found, however, in the intersection of these distinct but complementary historiographical perspectives.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Three little pieces for computer and relativity

    Numerical relativity has made big strides over the last decade. A number of problems that have plagued the field for years have now been mostly solved. This progress has transformed numerical relativity into a powerful tool to explore fundamental problems in physics and astrophysics, and I present here three representative examples. These "three little pieces" reflect a personal choice and describe work that I am particularly familiar with. However, many more examples could be made.Comment: 42 pages, 11 figures.     Dynamical Boson Stars

    The idea of stable, localized bundles of energy has strong appeal as a model for particles. In the 1950s John Wheeler envisioned such bundles as smooth configurations of electromagnetic energy that he called {\em geons}, but none were found. Instead, particle-like solutions were found in the late 1960s with the addition of a scalar field, and these were given the name {\em boson stars}. Since then, boson stars find use in a wide variety of models as sources of dark matter, as black hole mimickers, in simple models of binary systems, and as a tool in finding black holes in higher dimensions with only a single killing vector.     Epidemiology of acute kidney injury in Hungarian intensive care units: a multicenter, prospective, observational study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Despite the substantial progress in the quality of critical care, the incidence and mortality of acute kidney injury (AKI) continues to rise during hospital admissions. We conducted a national, multicenter, prospective, epidemiological survey to evaluate the importance of AKI in intensive care units (ICUs) in Hungary. The objectives of this study were to determine the incidence of AKI in ICU patients; to characterize the differences in aetiology, illness severity and clinical practice; and to determine the influencing factors of the development of AKI and the patients' outcomes.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We analysed the demographic, morbidity, treatment modality and outcome data of patients (n = 459) admitted to ICUs between October 1<sup>st</sup>, 2009 and November 30<sup>th</sup>, 2009 using a prospectively filled in electronic survey form in 7 representative ICUs.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The major reason for ICU admission was surgical in 64.3% of patients and medical in the remaining 35.7%. One-hundred-twelve patients (24.4%) had AKI. By AKIN criteria 11.5% had Stage 1, 5.4% had Stage 2 and 7.4% had Stage 3. In 44.0% of patients, AKI was associated with septic shock. Vasopressor treatment, SAPS II score, serum creatinine on ICU admission and sepsis were the independent risk factors for development of any stage of AKI. Among the Stage 3 patients (34) 50% received renal replacement therapy. The overall utilization of intermittent renal replacement therapy was high (64.8%). The overall in-hospital mortality rate of AKI was 49% (55/112). The ICU mortality rate was 39.3% (44/112). The independent risk factors for ICU mortality were age, mechanical ventilation, SOFA score and AKI Stage 3.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>For the first time we have established the incidence of AKI using the AKIN criteria in Hungarian ICUs. Results of the present study confirm that AKI has a high incidence and is associated with high ICU and in-hospital mortality.</p

    Effect of chloroquine on gene expression of Plasmodium yoelii nigeriensis during its sporogonic development in the mosquito vector

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The anti-malarial chloroquine can modulate the outcome of infection during the <it>Plasmodium </it>sporogonic development, interfering with <it>Plasmodium </it>gene expression and subsequently, with transmission. The present study sets to identify <it>Plasmodium </it>genes that might be regulated by chloroquine in the mosquito vector.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Differential display RT-PCR (DDRT-PCR) was used to identify genes expressed during the sporogonic cycle that are regulated by exposure to chloroquine. <it>Anopheles stephensi </it>mosquitoes were fed on <it>Plasmodium yoelii nigeriensis</it>-infected mice. Three days post-infection, mosquitoes were fed a non-infectious blood meal from mice treated orally with 50 mg/kg chloroquine. Two differentially expressed <it>Plasmodium </it>transcripts (Pyn_chl091 and Pyn_chl055) were further characterized by DNA sequencing and real-time PCR analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Both transcripts were represented in <it>Plasmodium </it>EST databases, but displayed no homology with any known genes. Pyn_chl091 was upregulated by day 18 post infection when the mosquito had a second blood meal. However, when the effect of chloroquine on that transcript was investigated during the erythrocytic cycle, no significant differences were observed. Although slightly upregulated by chloroquine exposure the expression of Pyn_chl055 was more affected by development, increasing towards the end of the sporogonic cycle. Transcript abundance of Pyn_chl055 was reduced when erythrocytic stages were treated with chloroquine.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Chloroquine increased parasite load in mosquito salivary glands and interferes with the expression of at least two <it>Plasmodium </it>genes. The transcripts identified contain putative signal peptides and transmembrane domains suggesting that these proteins, due to their location, are targets of chloroquine (not as an antimalarial) probably through cell trafficking and recycling.</p
