Penitas Dam – In Situ Stress-Strain Characteristics of Materials

    Get PDF
The deformability properties of all the materials of Penitas Dam (43-m high) are estimated based upon the measurement of total stresses, pore pressures and strains by means of the instrumentation placed inside the embankment. The results of these measurements indicate that all the materials show octahedral stress-octahedral strain cuasilinear relationships as if they were elastic. The values of the deformability moduli E and the Poisson\u27s ratios v computed from these relationships are compared with the moduli E obtained by means of confined plate bearing tests made in situ during construction of the dam, and are also used to feed a bidimensional finite element model analysis by which the states of stress and strain within the dam are computed and compared with the real stresses and strains measured

    Processos de nasalização em lung’ie

This study describes and analyzes the vocalic nasality triggered by nasal elements in coda and onset in Lung’Ie, a Portuguese-based Creole spoken in São Tomé and Príncipe. We observed the language’s phonotactic behavior, investigating the occurrence of vocalic nasalization processes according to its segmental and suprasegmental aspects. In this regard, we took into account the lexical stress and the possibility of segmental resyllabification. We designed a perceptual test in order to identify the way by which the coda nasality was perceived by native speakers. Thus, by omitting a consonant in the onset position of the following syllable in relation to the syllable that has nasalization, speakers understood the nasal tail as a full consonant [n]. Nasal consonant in coda was therefore resyllabified into an onset position. This syllabic restructuration is an indication of a biphonemic interpretation of nasality in Lung’Ie (AGOSTINHO, 2015; BALDUINO et al., 2015; BANDEIRA, 2017). The phonotactic analysis indicates lexical stress as an essential factor for the realization of the nasalization process triggered by the onset. Nasalization processes by coda, on the other hand, are possible in stressed and unstressed syllables. The importance of stress in the application of this process supports a mixed suprasegmental system in Lung’Ie constituted by lexical stress and tones, whereas the stress is the main suprasegmental category (AGOSTINHO, 2015), and not a tonal system (MAURER, 2009).Este artigo descreve e analisa a nasalidade vocálica produzida por coda e onset nasal em lung’Ie, língua crioula falada em São Tomé e Príncipe.

The following are available online at https://www.mdpi.com/2218-273X/11/2/145/s1. Odorant molecules CAS identification are listed in Table S1. Statistical analysis on the comparison of odorant properties (described in Table 1 and Table 2) in Table S2. The Vina grid box in Figure S1, the X-ray and Uniprot hOBP sequences alignment are presented in Figure S2 and the RMSD and cartoon structural superposition in Figures S3 and S4, respectively. Standard scatter plots/linear correlation regression are presented as SM, in Figures S5–S9, evaluating the relation of ΔGbinding to the other properties separately. The docking binding energies against the 4RUN X-ray structure are shown in Table S3.The binding of known odorant molecules to the human odorant-binding protein (hOBP) was evaluated in silico. Docking experiments elucidate the preferable binding site and binding affinity of odorant molecules to hOBP. The physicochemical properties molecular weight (MW), vapor pressure (Vp), hydrophobicity level (logP), number of double bonds (NºDB), degree of unsaturation (DoU) and the chemical classification, were selected for the study of odorant modulation. Here, these properties were analyzed concerning 30 pleasant and 30 unpleasant odorants, chosen to represent a wide variety of compounds and to determine their influence on the binding energy to hOBP. Our findings indicate that MW, logP and Vp are the most important odorant variables, directly correlated to odorant-binding energies (ΔGbinding) towards hOBP. Understanding how the odorants behave when complexed with the OBP in human olfaction opens new possibilities for the development of future biotechnological applications, including sensory devices, medical diagnosis, among others. The following funding is acknowledged: the authors thank the support received from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through the strategic funding of UID/BIO/04469/2019 unit and BioTecNorte Operation (NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000004) funded by the European Regional Development Fund under the scope of Norte2020—Programa Operacional Regional do Norte

This article is based on my research with people, generally young, responsible for crimes against property over recent decades in Buenos Aires. The analysis emphasizes the different connections between crime, work, poverty and urban experience formed over this time period. I look to show that, far from being a "criminal underworld" with its own logic, the transformations in the illegalities under study are generally conditioned by two factors: transformations in the labour market and changes in the cultural experience of poverty, whose meaning is linked to the equally mutating place of consumption. Finally the city, the place where everything unfolds, is transformed at the same time as the urban experience of the subjects alters and interferes in the illegalities under study
