    The TOOT00 Redshift Survey of Radio Sources

    We present first results from the study of the TOOT00 region consisting of 47 radio sources brighter than 100 mJy at 151 MHz. We have 81% spectroscopic redshift completeness. From the K-z diagram we deduce that the host galaxies are similar to ~3 L* passively evolved elliptical galaxies and thus estimate the redshifts of the 9 sources without a secure spectroscopic redshift yielding a median redshift of 1.287. Above the RLF break we have a quasar fraction f ~ 0.3 although the quasars appear reddened; below the RLF break f -> 0 if we exclude flat-spectrum radio sources. We present a histogram of the number of TOOT00 radio sources versus their redshift which looks broadly like the Willott et al. (2001) prediction for TOOT, although the observed ratio of high to low redshift objects is somewhat lower than the prediction.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, to be published in AN (proceedings of the Granada Workshop on High Redshift Radio Galaxies

    Implementation and impact of experiential learning in a graduate level teacher education program: An example from a Canadian university

    Teacher inquiry, in which teachers study their own professional practice, is currently a popular form of experiential learning that is considered a powerful tool to bring about effective change in teaching and learning. Little empirical evidence, however, exists to explain precisely if and how this pedagogical methodology moves teachers toward transformation of practice. Using grounded theory methodology, we examined twelve end of term graduate level learning portfolios and administered a survey to 336 in-service teachers enrolled in a two-year graduate diploma program in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University, Canada. We found powerful evidence that our programs were highly impactful, with 94% of teachers reporting transformative learning within the second year of the program. Using portfolio data we examined the process of the teacher transformations. Our findings revealed that teachersΓÇÖ abilities to interrogate their subjective-objective stance deepened their experiential learning. Using three case studies we exemplify how transformative pathways were formulated and conclude with a discussion of the implications of learning through experience, including the value of student-generated learning goals, continuous interfacing of theory and practice, seeing your ΓÇÿteachingΓÇÖ through the eyes of your students/colleagues or parents, and the power of living your research question in the context of your own classroom and school setting. We end the paper on a cautionary note pointing out the vulnerability of programs of this nature in an era of accountability, standardization, quality control, and risk management all of which eclipse approaches that focus on authentic practical problems and student generated solutions

    Charge and spin Hall conductivity in metallic graphene

    Graphene has an unusual low-energy band structure with four chiral bands and half-quantized and quantized Hall effects that have recently attracted theoretical and experimental attention. We study the Fermi energy and disorder dependence of its spin Hall conductivity. In the metallic regime we find that vertex corrections enhance the intrinsic spin Hall conductivity and that skew scattering can lead to its values that exceed the quantized ones expected when the chemical potential is inside the spin-orbit induced energy gap. We predict that large spin Hall conductivities will be observable in graphene even when the spin-orbit gap does not survive disorder.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    During 1976 - 1977, the Sabah Malaria Control Programme carried out an extended field trial com­paring the residual effects of Summithiona, DDT and Malathionb against the primary vector of Sabah, An. balabacensis balabacensis Baisas in Kuala Penyu district. In the courseof this work and continuiting into 1978, a study was made of the conditions of increased malaria transmission in 3 areas four month after residual applications of Sumithion, DDT and Malathion. Since the findings relate to the south­western part of Sabah which suffers annual anticipated seasonal outbreaks of malaria they are of parti­cular epidemiological interes

    Ultramafic xenoliths from the Bearpaw Mountains, Montana, USA: evidence for multiple metasomatic events in the lithospheric mantle beneath the Wyoming craton

    Ultramafic xenoliths in Eocene minettes of the Bearpaw Mountains volcanic field (Montana, USA), derived from the lower lithosphere of the Wyoming craton, can be divided based on textural criteria into tectonite and cumulate groups. The tectonites consist of strongly depleted spinel lherzolites, harzburgites and dunites. Although their mineralogical compositions are generally similar to those of spinel peridotites in off-craton settings, some contain pyroxenes and spinels that have unusually low Al2O3 contents more akin to those found in cratonic spinel peridotites. Furthermore, the tectonite peridotites have whole-rock major element compositions that tend to be significantly more depleted than non-cratonic mantle spinel peridotites (high MgO, low CaO, Al2O3 and TiO2) and resemble those of cratonic mantle. These compositions could have been generated by up to 30% partial melting of an undepleted mantle source. Petrographic evidence suggests that the mantle beneath the Wyoming craton was re-enriched in three ways: (1) by silicate melts that formed mica websterite and clinopyroxenite veins; (2) by growth of phlogopite from K-rich hydrous fluids; (3) by interaction with aqueous fluids to form orthopyroxene porphyroblasts and orthopyroxenite veins. In contrast to their depleted major element compositions, the tectonite peridotites are mostly light rare earth element (LREE)-enriched and show enrichment in fluid-mobile elements such as Cs, Rb, U and Pb on mantle-normalized diagrams. Lack of enrichment in high field strength elements (HFSE; e.g. Nb, Ta, Zr and Hf) suggests that the tectonite peridotites have been metasomatized by a subduction-related fluid. Clinopyroxenes from the tectonite peridotites have distinct U-shaped REE patterns with strong LREE enrichment. They have 143Nd/144Nd values that range from 0·5121 (close to the host minette values) to 0·5107, similar to those of xenoliths from the nearby Highwood Mountains. Foliated mica websterites also have low 143Nd/144Nd values (0·5113) and extremely high 87Sr/86Sr ratios in their constituent phlogopite, indicating an ancient (probably mid-Proterozoic) enrichment. This enriched mantle lithosphere later contributed to the formation of the high-K Eocene host magmas. The cumulate group ranges from clinopyroxene-rich mica peridotites (including abundant mica wehrlites) to mica clinopyroxenites. Most contain >30% phlogopite. Their mineral compositions are similar to those of phenocrysts in the host minettes. Their whole-rock compositions are generally poorer in MgO but richer in incompatible trace elements than those of the tectonite peridotites. Whole-rock trace element patterns are enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILE; Rb, Cs, U and Pb) and depleted in HFSE (Nb, Ta Zr and Hf) as in the host minettes, and their Sr–Nd isotopic compositions are also identical to those of the minettes. Their clinopyroxenes are LREE-enriched and formed in equilibrium with a LREE-enriched melt closely resembling the minettes. The cumulates therefore represent a much younger magmatic event, related to crystallization at mantle depths of minette magmas in Eocene times, that caused further metasomatic enrichment of the lithosphere

    Intrinsic and Rashba Spin-orbit Interactions in Graphene Sheets

    Starting from a microscopic tight-binding model and using second order perturbation theory, we derive explicit expressions for the intrinsic and Rashba spin-orbit interaction induced gaps in the Dirac-like low-energy band structure of an isolated graphene sheet. The Rashba interaction parameter is first order in the atomic carbon spin-orbit coupling strength ξ\xi and first order in the external electric field EE perpendicular to the graphene plane, whereas the intrinsic spin-orbit interaction which survives at E=0 is second order in ξ\xi. The spin-orbit terms in the low-energy effective Hamiltonian have the form proposed recently by Kane and Mele. \textit{Ab initio} electronic structure calculations were performed as a partial check on the validity of the tight-binding model.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures; typos corrected, references update

    The lithospheric mantle and lower crust-mantle relationships under Scotland: a xenolithic perspective

    In the British Isles the majority of volcanic rocks containing upper mantle and lower crustal xenoliths occur in Scotland. Most of the occurrences are of Carboniferous–Permian age. This paper presents new data on the mineral chemistry of spinel lherzolite xenoliths from the five principal Scottish tectonic terranes. Compositional variations among the minerals emphasize the broad lateral heterogeneity of the subcontinental lithospheric mantle across the region. The remarkable range of Al2O3 v. CaO exhibited by the clinopyroxenes compared with data from other ‘xenolith provinces' emphasizes the extremely complex tectonomagmatic history of the Scottish lithosphere. The generalized age increase from southern and central Scotland to the Northern Highland and Hebridean terranes of the north and NW, with concomitant complexity of geological history, is reflected also by trace element and isotopic studies. Reaction relationships in lherzolites from the Hebridean Terrane, owing to pervasive metasomatism, involve secondary growth of sodic feldspar. This, and light REE enrichment of clinopyroxenes, points to involvement of a natro-carbonatitic melt. Most pyroxenitic xenoliths are inferred to form a basal crustal layer with a generally sharp discontinuity above the underlying (dominantly lherzolitic) mantle. A second discontinuity is inferred to separate these ultramafic cumulates from overlying, broadly cognate metagabbroic cumulates

    Minimising ambient illumination via ambient subtraction: Smartphone assessment of jaundice in liver patients via sclera images

    Using smartphone images to quantify color presents a noninvasive way to assess jaundice and other color-related biomarkers of the human body. Here we focus on assessing jaundice through accurate bilirubin measurement in adult liver patients, the first time optical imaging has been applied to this cohort. These patients can suffer from very high levels of bilirubin, indicating their severity of liver disease. A smartphone assessment technique for jaundice based around the color of the sclera (white of the eye) extracted from images is being developed, as smartphone imaging enables cheap, non-invasive and quantitative readings. Variations in ambient light cause large changes to recorded pixel values so must be accounted for to ensure that any changes detected are due to changes in jaundice level. Here we suggest the use of an ambient subtraction approach to minimise the effects of ambient light. Pairs of flash/no-flash images are captured and the extracted values subtracted to yield data as though under a pure flash illumination. We present data demonstrating the technique with a group of healthy adult volunteers. We also present data from a patient study involving adults with liver disease. Images were captured and the bilirubin (jaundice) level predicted from these images before and after subtraction was compared to the ground truth value obtained via blood test. The linear correlation coefficient increased from 0.47 to 0.85 (p<0.001 in both cases) upon application of subtraction, demonstrating the effectiveness of the technique

    The Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) facility is a conventional neutrino beam which produces muon neutrinos by focusing a beam of mesons into a long evacuated decay volume. We have built four arrays of ionization chambers to monitor the position and intensity of the hadron and muon beams associated with neutrino production at locations downstream of the decay volume.
