Purges of 1964 and anticorruption discourse in the caricature by mainstream press

This article addresses the visual and verbal discourses of mainstream press in the context of the 1964 Brazilian Coup, with an emphasis on the ‘secondary target’ of the purges undertaken by the new regime, namely, corruption. The study analyzes the role played by periodicals – especially caricatures – in building representations that provided the dictatorship with support, mainly regarding the fight against corruption. In order to adequately approach the object, we try to grasp the political aims and discursive manipulations of the players involved, who were often driven by reasons very far from fighting against corruption. Keywords: Caricature; Politics; Dictatorship;Brazil – History – 1964 - 1985

A FORMAÇÃO DO MDB E A INFLUÊNCIA DO QUADRO PARTIDÁRIO ANTERIOR

O objetivo do autor neste artigo é fazer uma análise da formação do “partido das oposições” no regime militar: o MDB. O autor pretende mostrar que o MDB incorporou, em sua constituição, a herança trabalhista e reformista oriundas principalmente do PTB e de parte do PSD — agremiações que pertenceram ao sistema partidário do período 1945-1965 —, dos quais vieram a maioria dos políticos que formaram o Movimento Democrático Brasileiro. A natureza dessa herança definiu o programa e a atuação deste partido e seu deslocamento num campo político que pode ser denominado de centro-esquerda

O artigo analisa a construção do mito da conspiração judaico-comunista, encarando-o como ponto de interseção entre os movimentos anti-semita e anti-comunista do século XX. A proposta é relacionar o fenômeno às tensões provocadas pelo processo de modernização e transformação revolucionária das sociedades contemporâneas.The article analyses the existence of a jewish-communist conspiration myth, faced as an intersection point between XX century's anti-semitism and anticommunism movements. The aim is to show the links between the myth and the processes of modernization and revolutionary transformation affecting contemporary societies

Political Violence in Republican Brazil: an Analysis of Repressive Laws and Institutions (1889-1988)

El trabajo presenta un balance analítico sobre la historia de la violencia de naturaleza política practicada por el Estado brasileño en un marco temporal que se inicia con la implantación de la República (1889) y finaliza con la aprobación de la última Constitución Nacional (1988). Esta periodización pretende mostrar los momentos más significativos de esa historia al poner el énfasis en el estudio de la legislación y de las instituciones represivas que marcaron la violencia política estatal en Brasil. El objetivo es dar cuenta de los desafíos que debió enfrentar la construcción de una sociedad democrática, ya que el Estado trató invariablemente como subversivas (apelando con frecuencia a un léxico anticomunista) y reprimió demandas políticas destinadas a distribuir riquezas y poder, así como cualquier tipo de manifestaciones sociales consideradas como amenazas al orden político y social.Taking as chronological landmarks the inauguration of the Republic (1889) and the approval of the last Constitution (1988), the article presents an analytical balance of the history of the political violence practiced by the Brazilian State. The periodization on which the text is based intends to show the most striking moments of this history emphasizing the analysis of the legislative and repressive institutions that oriented the State political violence. The objective is to perceive the challenges to the constitution of a democratic society in Brazil, since the State invariably treated as subversives (often using Anti-communist language) and repressed any political demands aimed at distributing wealth and power, as well as any social manifestations considered threatening to the political and social order
