Low-temperature formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Titanās atmosphere
The detection of benzene in Titanās atmosphere led to the emergence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as potential nucleation agents triggering the growth of Titanās orange-brownish haze layers. However, the fundamental mechanisms leading to the formation of PAHs in Titanās low-temperature atmosphere have remained elusive. We provide persuasive evidence through laboratory experiments and computations that prototype PAHs like anthracene and phenanthrene (C14H10) are synthesized via barrierless reactions involving naphthyl radicals (C10H7ā¢) with vinylacetylene (CH2=CHāCā”CH) in low-temperature environments. These elementary reactions are rapid, have no entrance barriers, and synthesize anthracene and phenanthrene via van der Waals complexes and submerged barriers. This facile route to anthracene and phenanthreneāpotential building blocks to complex PAHs and aerosols in Titanāsignifies a critical shift in the perception that PAHs can only be formed under high-temperature conditions, providing a detailed understanding of the chemistry of Titanās atmosphere by untangling elementary reactions on the most fundamental level
Diagnostic accuracy of dual-source computed tomography in the detection of coronary chronic total occlusion: Comparison with invasive angiography
The present study is designed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of dual-source computed tomography (CT) in the detection of coronary chronic total occlusion (CTO). Dual-source CT diagnosed 149 patients with 258 significant coronary artery lesions including CTOs. The diagnosis was redecided by subsequent invasive coronary angiography (ICA). Eighty seven CTOs were finally identified by ICA. Dual-source CT correctly detected 84 of these 87 occlusions, but falsely diagnosed 9 severe stenosis lesions as CTOs. Calcification had an influence on the accuracy of CTO detection. Our findings indicated that dual-source CT had a good ability to detect CTOs, in spite of a slight bias towards overestimating the stenosis degree, especially when there was severe calcification.Key words: Dual-source computed tomography, invasive coronary angiography, coronary chronic total occlusion

Realization of a Tunable Artificial Atom at a Supercritically Charged Vacancy in Graphene
The remarkable electronic properties of graphene have fueled the vision of a
graphene-based platform for lighter, faster and smarter electronics and
computing applications. One of the challenges is to devise ways to tailor its
electronic properties and to control its charge carriers. Here we show that a
single atom vacancy in graphene can stably host a local charge and that this
charge can be gradually built up by applying voltage pulses with the tip of a
scanning tunneling microscope (STM). The response of the conduction electrons
in graphene to the local charge is monitored with scanning tunneling and Landau
level spectroscopy, and compared to numerical simulations. As the charge is
increased, its interaction with the conduction electrons undergoes a transition
into a supercritical regime 6-11 where itinerant electrons are trapped in a
sequence of quasi-bound states which resemble an artificial atom. The
quasi-bound electron states are detected by a strong enhancement of the density
of states (DOS) within a disc centered on the vacancy site which is surrounded
by halo of hole states. We further show that the quasi-bound states at the
vacancy site are gate tunable and that the trapping mechanism can be turned on
and off, providing a new mechanism to control and guide electrons in grapheneComment: 18 pages and 5 figures plus 14 pages and 15 figures of supplementary

Transport of Live Cells under Sterile Conditions Using a Chemotactic Droplet
Ā© 2018 The Author(s). 1-Decanol droplets, formed in an aqueous medium containing decanoate at high pH, become chemotactic when a chemical gradient is placed in the external aqueous environment. We investigated if such droplets can be used as transporters for living cells. We developed a partially hydrophobic alginate capsule as a protective unit that can be precisely placed in a droplet and transported along chemical gradients. Once the droplets with cargo reached a defined final destination, the association of the alginate capsule and decanol droplet was disrupted and cargo deposited. Both Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis cells survived and proliferated after transport even though transport occurred under harsh and sterile conditions
Similarities between structural distortions under pressure and chemical doping in superconducting BaFe2As2
The discovery of a new family of high Tc materials, the iron arsenides
(FeAs), has led to a resurgence of interest in superconductivity. Several
important traits of these materials are now apparent, for example, layers of
iron tetrahedrally coordinated by arsenic are crucial structural ingredients.
It is also now well established that the parent non-superconducting phases are
itinerant magnets, and that superconductivity can be induced by either chemical
substitution or application of pressure, in sharp contrast to the cuprate
family of materials. The structure and properties of chemically substituted
samples are known to be intimately linked, however, remarkably little is known
about this relationship when high pressure is used to induce superconductivity
in undoped compounds. Here we show that the key structural features in
BaFe2As2, namely suppression of the tetragonal to orthorhombic phase transition
and reduction in the As-Fe-As bond angle and Fe-Fe distance, show the same
behavior under pressure as found in chemically substituted samples. Using
experimentally derived structural data, we show that the electronic structure
evolves similarly in both cases. These results suggest that modification of the
Fermi surface by structural distortions is more important than charge doping
for inducing superconductivity in BaFe2As2
Kinetic frustration and the nature of the magnetic and paramagnetic states in iron pnictides and iron chalcogenides
The iron pnictide and chalcogenide compounds are a subject of intensive
investigations due to their high temperature superconductivity.\cite{a-LaFeAsO}
They all share the same structure, but there is significant variation in their
physical properties, such as magnetic ordered moments, effective masses,
superconducting gaps and T. Many theoretical techniques have been applied
to individual compounds but no consistent description of the trends is
available \cite{np-review}. We carry out a comparative theoretical study of a
large number of iron-based compounds in both their magnetic and paramagnetic
states. We show that the nature of both states is well described by our method
and the trends in all the calculated physical properties such as the ordered
moments, effective masses and Fermi surfaces are in good agreement with
experiments across the compounds. The variation of these properties can be
traced to variations in the key structural parameters, rather than changes in
the screening of the Coulomb interactions. Our results provide a natural
explanation of the strongly Fermi surface dependent superconducting gaps
observed in experiments\cite{Ding}. We propose a specific optimization of the
crystal structure to look for higher T superconductors.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures with a 5-page supplementary materia
Small RNA Profile in Moso Bamboo Root and Leaf Obtained by High Definition Adapters
Moso bamboo (Phyllostachy heterocycla cv. pubescens L.) is an economically important fast-growing tree. In order to gain better understanding of gene expression regulation in this important species we used next generation sequencing to profile small RNAs in leaf and roots of young seedlings. Since standard kits to produce cDNA of small RNAs are biased for certain small RNAs, we used High Definition adapters that reduce ligation bias. We identified and experimentally validated five new microRNAs and a few other small non-coding RNAs that were not microRNAs. The biological implication of microRNA expression levels and targets of microRNAs are discussed
