Identifying Variability in Process Performance Indicators
The performance perspective of business processes is concerned
with the definition of performance requirements usually specified
as a set of Process Performance Indicators (PPIs). Like other business
process perspectives such as control-flow or data, there are cases in which
PPIs are subject to variability. However, although the modelling of business
process variability (BPV) has evolved significantly, there are very
few contributions addressing the variability in the performance perspective
of business processes. Modelling PPI variants with tools and techniques
non-suitable for variability may generate redundant models, thus
making it difficult its maintenance and future adaptations, also increasing
possibility of errors in its managing. In this paper we present different
cases of PPI variability detected as result of the analysis of several
processes where BPV is present. Based on an existent metamodel used
for defining PPIs over BPs, we propose its formal extension that allows
the definition of PPI variability according to the cases identified.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2015-70560-RJunta de Andalucía P12-TIC-1867Junta de Andalucía P10-TIC-590
Influence of climatic variables on crown condition in pine forests of Northern Spain
Producción CientíficaThe aim of this study was to find relationships between crown condition and
some climatic parameters to identify which are those having a main influence on
crown condition, and how this influence is shown in the tree (crown transparency),
and to contribute to the understanding of how these parameters will affect under
future climate change scenarios
Error determination in the photogrammetric assessment of shoreline changes
The evaluation of error or uncertainty in shoreline change studies is an issue of
prime importance for providing an adequate framework for calculated rates of change and to allow the establishment of threshold values above which the rates would be significant. In this note, a practical, easy-to-use method is presented to estimate error involved in the calculation of shoreline changes on aerial photographs, including the three most used types of shoreline indicators: high water line, dune/cliff toe and cliff top. This approach takes into account the specific characteristics of each shoreline proxy, such as relief in the case of
the cliff top or tidal oscillations in the case of the high water line. At the same time it includes the error components that are independent from the proxy, basically related to the technical aspects of the process such as photo scanning and georeferencing. A practical example of application of the method is provided for several types of data inputs, based on shoreline changes around the Bay of Cádiz (SW Spain)
Assessing the trophic ecology of three sympatric squid in the marine ecosystem off the Patagonian Shelf by combining stomach content and stable isotopic analyses
Squid species are important components of the Southern Atlantic Ocean ecosystems, as they
prey on a wide range of crustaceans, fish and cephalopods. As a result of this trophic
interaction and their high abundance, they are considered reliable indicators of energy
transfer and biomass in the food web. We identified Illex argentinus, Doryteuthis gahi and
Onykia ingens as the most important squid species interacting on the Patagonian shelf, and
used isotope analysis and stomach content identification to assess the feeding ecology and
interaction of these squids in the ecosystem. Our results describe trophic interactions by
direct predation of O. ingens and I. argentinus on D. gahi, and a trophic overlap of the three
squid, and indicate a higher trophic level and differences in the foraging areas for mature
and maturing D. gahi inferred through δ15N and δ13C concentrations. These differences were
related to the segregation and different habitat of large mature D. gahi and suggest a food
enrichment of C and N based on feeding sources other than those used by small maturing

Electrospray Ionization with High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry as a Tool for Lignomics: Lignin Mass Spectrum Deconvolution
Capability to characterize lignin, lignocellulose, and their degradation products is essential for development of new renewable feedstocks. Electrospray ionization high-resolution time-offlight mass spectrometry (ESI HR TOF MS) method was developed expanding the lignomics toolkit while targeting the simultaneous detection of low and high molecular weight (MW) lignin species. The effect of a broad range of electrolytes and various ionization conditions on ion formation and ionization effectiveness was studied using a suite of mono-, di- and triarene lignin model compounds as well as intact lignin. Contrary to the previous studies, the positive ionization mode was found to be more effective for methoxy-substituted arenes and polyphenols, i.e., species of a broadly varied MW structurally similar to the native lignin. For the first time, we report an effective formation of multiply charged species of lignin with the subsequent mass spectrum deconvolution in the presence of 100 mmol·L-1 formic acid in the positive ESI mode. The developed method enabled the detection of lignin species with an MW between 150 and 9,000 Da or higher, depending on the mass analyzer. The obtained Mn and Mw values of 1,500 and 2,500 Da, respectively, were in good agreement with those determined by gel permeation chromatography. Furthermore, the deconvoluted ESI mass spectrum was similar to that obtained with matrixassisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) TOF MS, yet featuring a higher signal-to-noise ratio. The formation of multiply charged species was confirmed with ESI ion mobility HR Q-TOF MS
Enzymatic hydrophobic modification of jute fibers via grafting to reinforce composites
Horseradish peroxidase (HRP)/H2O2 system catalyzes the free-radical polymerization of aromatic compounds such as lignins and gallate esters. In this work, dodecyl gallate (DG) was grafted onto the surfaces of lignin-rich jute fabrics by HRP-mediated oxidative polymerization with an aim to enhance the hydrophobicity of the fibers. The DG-grafted jute fibers and reaction products of their model compounds were characterized by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results clearly indicated the grafting of DG to the jute fiber by HRP. Furthermore, the hydrophobicity of jute fabrics was determined by measuring the wetting time and static contact angle. Compared to the control sample, the wetting time and static contact angle of the grated fabrics changed from ~1 s to 1 h and from ~0° to 123.68°, respectively. This clearly proved that the hydrophobicity of jute fabrics improved considerably. Conditions of the HRP-catalyzed DG-grafting reactions were optimized in terms of the DG content of modified jute fabrics. Moreover, the results of breaking strength and elongation of DG-grafted jute/ polypropylene (PP) composites demonstrated improved reinforcement of the composite due to enzymatic hydrophobic modification of jute fibers. This work was financially supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (51173071), the Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University (NCET-12-0883), Program for Changjiang Scholars and Innovative Research Team in University (No. IRT_15R26) the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities (JUSRP51312B, JUSRP51505), and the Graduate Student Innovation Plan of Jiangsu Province of China (SJLX_0527)
Genomic Characterization of Haemophilus parasuis SH0165, a Highly Virulent Strain of Serovar 5 Prevalent in China
Haemophilus parasuis can be either a commensal bacterium of the porcine respiratory tract or an opportunistic pathogen causing Glässer's disease, a severe systemic disease that has led to significant economical losses in the pig industry worldwide. We determined the complete genomic sequence of H. parasuis SH0165, a highly virulent strain of serovar 5, which was isolated from a hog pen in North China. The single circular chromosome was 2,269,156 base pairs in length and contained 2,031 protein-coding genes. Together with the full spectrum of genes detected by the analysis of metabolic pathways, we confirmed that H. parasuis generates ATP via both fermentation and respiration, and possesses an intact TCA cycle for anabolism. In addition to possessing the complete pathway essential for the biosynthesis of heme, this pathogen was also found to be well-equipped with different iron acquisition systems, such as the TonB system and ABC-type transport complexes, to overcome iron limitation during infection and persistence. We identified a number of genes encoding potential virulence factors, such as type IV fimbriae and surface polysaccharides. Analysis of the genome confirmed that H. parasuis is naturally competent, as genes related to DNA uptake are present. A nine-mer DNA uptake signal sequence (ACAAGCGGT), identical to that found in Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae and Mannheimia haemolytica, followed by similar downstream motifs, was identified in the SH0165 genome. Genomic and phylogenetic comparisons with other Pasteurellaceae species further indicated that H. parasuis was closely related to another swine pathogenic bacteria A. pleuropneumoniae. The comprehensive genetic analysis presented here provides a foundation for future research on the metabolism, natural competence and virulence of H. parasuis
Transcriptomics of Haemophilus (Glässerella) parasuis serovar 5 subjected to culture conditions partially mimetic to natural infection for the search of new vaccine antigens
11 p.Haemophilus (Glässerella) parasuis is the etiological agent of Glässer’s disease in pigs. Control of this disorder has been traditionally based on bacterins. The search for alternative vaccines has focused mainly on the study of outer membrane proteins. This study investigates the transcriptome of H. (G.) parasuis serovar 5 subjected to in vitro conditions mimicking to those existing during an infection (high temperature and iron-restriction), with the aim of detecting the overexpression of genes coding proteins exposed on bacterial surface, which could represent good targets as vaccine candidates.
The transcriptomic approach identified 13 upregulated genes coding surface proteins: TbpA, TbpB, HxuA, HxuB, HxuC, FhuA, FimD, TolC, an autotransporter, a protein with immunoglobulin folding domains, another large protein with a tetratricopeptide repeat and two small proteins that did not contain any known domains. Of these, the first six genes coded proteins being related to iron extraction.
Six of the proteins have already been tested as vaccine antigens in murine and/or porcine infection models and showed protection against H. (G.) parasuis. However, the remaining seven have not yet been tested and, consequently, they could become useful as putative antigens in the prevention of Glässer’s disease. Anyway, the expression of this seven novel vaccine candidates should be shown in other serovars different from serovar 5.S
Characterization of crop residues from false banana/Ensete ventricosum/in Ethiopia in view of a full-resource valorization
Research ArticleFalse banana /Ensete ventricosum [Welw.] Cheesman/ is exploited as a food crop in
Ethiopia where it represents an important staple food. The plant is harvested and large
amounts of biomass residues are originated, mainly from the pseudo stem (i.e., fiber bundles
obtained from the leaf sheaths after being scrapped to produce starchy food) and the
inflorescence stalk. These materials were studied in relation to their summative chemical
composition, composition of lignin, lipophilic and polar extracts. Moreover, their structural
characteristics, in view of their valorization, were scrutinized. The analytical studies were
performed with the aid of FTIR, GC/MS, Py-GC/MS and SEM. The fiber bundles are aggregates
of mainly long and slender fibers with low ash, extractives and lignin contents (3.8%.
4.4% and 10.5% respectively) and high holocellulose and α-cellulose contents (87.5% and
59.6% respectively). The hemicelluloses in the fibers are mostly highly acetylated xylans
and the lignin is of the H-type (H:G:S, 1:0.7:0.8). This lignin composition is in line with the
FTIR peaks at 1670 cm-1 and 1250 cm-1.The inflorescence stalk has high ash content
(12.3% in the main stalk and 24.6% in fines) with a major proportion of potassium, high
extractives (25.9%), and low lignin and α-cellulose contents (5.8% and 17.9% respectively).
The stalk includes numerous starch granules in the cellular structure with the predominant
presence of parenchyma. The potential valorization routes for these materials are clearly different.
The fiber bundles could be used as a fiber source for paper pulp production with the
possibility of a prior hemicelluloses removal while the inflorescence stalk has nutritional
value for food and fodder. Furthermore, it can also be used for sugar fermentation productsinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Perinatal outcomes among immigrant mothers over two periods in a region of central Italy
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The number of immigrants has increased in Italy in the last twenty years (7.2% of the Italian population), as have infants of foreign-born parents, but scanty evidence on perinatal outcomes is available. The aim of this study was to investigate whether infants of foreign-born mothers living in Italy have different odds of adverse perinatal outcomes compared to those of native-born mothers, and if such measures changed over two periods.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The source of this area-based study was the regional hospital discharge database that records perinatal information on all births in the Lazio region. We analysed 296,739 singleton births born between 1996-1998 and 2006-2008. The exposure variable was the mother's region of birth. We considered five outcomes of perinatal health. We estimated crude and adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to evaluate the association between mother's region of birth and perinatal outcomes.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Perinatal outcomes were worse among infants of immigrant compared to Italian mothers, especially for sub-Saharan and west Africans, with the following crude ORs (in 1996-1998 and 2006-2008 respectively): 1.80 (95%CI:1.44-2.28) and 1.95 (95%CI:1.72-2.21) for very preterm births, and 1.32 (95%CI:1.16-1.50) and 1.32 (95%CI:1.25-1.39) for preterm births; 1.18 (95%CI:0.99-1.40) and 1.17 (95%CI:1.03-1.34) for a low Apgar score; 1.22 (95%CI:1.15-1.31) and 1.24 (95%CI:1.17-1.32) for the presence of respiratory diseases; 1.47 (95%CI:1.30-1.66) and 1.45 (95%CI:1.34-1.57) for the need for special or intensive neonatal care/in-hospital deaths; and 1.03 (95%CI:0.93-1.15) and 1.07 (95%CI:1.00-1.15) for congenital malformations. Overall, time did not affect the odds of outcomes differently between immigrant and Italian mothers and most outcomes improved over time among all infants. None of the risk factors considered confounded the associations.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our findings suggest that migrant status is a risk factor for adverse perinatal health. Moreover, they suggest that perinatal outcomes improved over time in some immigrant women. This could be due to a general improvement in immigrants' health in the past decade, or it may indicate successful application of policies that increase accessibility to mother-child health services during the periconception and prenatal periods for legal and illegal immigrant women in Italy.</p
