    Biosecurity and Vector Behaviour: Evaluating the Potential Threat Posed by Anglers and Canoeists as Pathways for the Spread of Invasive Non-Native Species and Pathogens

    Invasive non-native species (INNS) endanger native biodiversity and are a major economic problem. The management of pathways to prevent their introduction and establishment is a key target in the Convention on Biological Diversity's Aichi biodiversity targets for 2020. Freshwater environments are particularly susceptible to invasions as they are exposed to multiple introduction pathways, including non-native fish stocking and the release of boat ballast water. Since many freshwater INNS and aquatic pathogens can survive for several days in damp environments, there is potential for transport between water catchments on the equipment used by recreational anglers and canoeists. To quantify this biosecurity risk, we conducted an online questionnaire with 960 anglers and 599 canoeists to investigate their locations of activity, equipment used, and how frequently equipment was cleaned and/or dried after use. Anglers were also asked about their use and disposal of live bait. Our results indicate that 64% of anglers and 78.5% of canoeists use their equipment/boat in more than one catchment within a fortnight, the survival time of many of the INNS and pathogens considered in this study and that 12% of anglers and 50% of canoeists do so without either cleaning or drying their kit between uses. Furthermore, 8% of anglers and 28% of canoeists had used their equipment overseas without cleaning or drying it after each use which could facilitate both the introduction and secondary spread of INNS in the UK. Our results provide a baseline against which to evaluate the effectiveness of future biosecurity awareness campaigns, and identify groups to target with biosecurity awareness information. Our results also indicate that the biosecurity practices of these groups must improve to reduce the likelihood of inadvertently spreading INNS and pathogens through these activities

    The genetic legacy of extreme exploitation in a polar vertebrate

    Understanding the effects of human exploitation on the genetic composition of wild populations is important for predicting species persistence and adaptive potential. We therefore investigated the genetic legacy of large-scale commercial harvesting by reconstructing, on a global scale, the recent demographic history of the Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella), a species that was hunted to the brink of extinction by 18th and 19th century sealers. Molecular genetic data from over 2,000 individuals sampled from all eight major breeding locations across the species’ circumpolar geographic distribution, show that at least four relict populations around Antarctica survived commercial hunting. Coalescent simulations suggest that all of these populations experienced severe bottlenecks down to effective population sizes of around 150–200. Nevertheless, comparably high levels of neutral genetic variability were retained as these declines are unlikely to have been strong enough to deplete allelic richness by more than around 15%. These findings suggest that even dramatic short-term declines need not necessarily result in major losses of diversity, and explain the apparent contradiction between the high genetic diversity of this species and its extreme exploitation history

    Impact of a farmers’ market healthy food subsidy on the diet quality of adults with low incomes in British Columbia, Canada: a pragmatic randomized controlled trial

    Background: Adults with low incomes have lower diet quality than their higher income counterparts. In Canada, the British Columbia Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon Program (FMNCP) provides coupons to low-income households to purchase healthy foods in farmers’ markets. Objective: The objective of this study was to examine the impact of the FMNCP on the diet quality of adults with low incomes. Method: In a pragmatic randomized controlled trial conducted in 2019, adults with low incomes (≥18 y) were randomly assigned either to an FMNCP intervention (n = 143) or a no-intervention control group (n = 142). The FMNCP group received 16 coupon sheets valued at $21 per sheet over 10–15 wk to purchase healthy foods from farmers’ markets. Participants completed a questionnaire and 2 24-h dietary recalls at baseline (0 wk), immediately post-intervention (10–15 wk), and 16-wk post-intervention (26–31 wk). Diet quality was calculated using the Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015). Linear mixed-effects regression assessed differences in HEI-2015 total (primary outcome) and component scores (secondary outcomes) between the FMNCP and control groups at post-intervention and 16-wk post-intervention. Subgroup analyses examined program impacts by sex and age group (18–59 y, ≥60 y). Results: There were no significant differences in HEI-2015 total scores between the FMNCP and control groups at post-intervention (−0.07; 95% CI: −4.07, 3.93) or 16-wk post-intervention (1.22; 95% CI: −3.00, 5.44) overall or between subgroups. There were no significant between-group differences in HEI-2015 component scores at post-intervention, although there were significant differences in component scores for dairy and fatty acids at 16-wk post-intervention. Conclusion: The FMNCP did not significantly improve diet quality among adults with low incomes over the study period. Further research is needed to explore whether higher subsidy amounts or a longer intervention period is needed to meaningfully improve diet quality among adults with low incomes.
