On the Riemann Tensor in Double Field Theory
Double field theory provides T-duality covariant generalized tensors that are
natural extensions of the scalar and Ricci curvatures of Riemannian geometry.
We search for a similar extension of the Riemann curvature tensor by developing
a geometry based on the generalized metric and the dilaton. We find a duality
covariant Riemann tensor whose contractions give the Ricci and scalar
curvatures, but that is not fully determined in terms of the physical fields.
This suggests that \alpha' corrections to the effective action require \alpha'
corrections to T-duality transformations and/or generalized diffeomorphisms.
Further evidence to this effect is found by an additional computation that
shows that there is no T-duality invariant four-derivative object built from
the generalized metric and the dilaton that reduces to the square of the
Riemann tensor.Comment: 36 pages, v2: minor changes, ref. added, v3: appendix on frame

Classification of non-Riemannian doubled-yet-gauged spacetime
Assuming covariant fields as the `fundamental' variables,
Double Field Theory can accommodate novel geometries where a Riemannian metric
cannot be defined, even locally. Here we present a complete classification of
such non-Riemannian spacetimes in terms of two non-negative integers,
, . Upon these backgrounds, strings become
chiral and anti-chiral over and directions respectively, while
particles and strings are frozen over the directions. In
particular, we identify as Riemannian manifolds, as
non-relativistic spacetime, as Gomis-Ooguri non-relativistic string,
as ultra-relativistic Carroll geometry, and as Siegel's
chiral string. Combined with a covariant Kaluza-Klein ansatz which we further
spell, leads to Newton-Cartan gravity. Alternative to the conventional
string compactifications on small manifolds, non-Riemannian spacetime such as
, may open a new scheme of the dimensional reduction from ten to
four.Comment: 1+41 pages; v2) Refs added; v3) Published version; v4) Sign error in

Double Field Theory Formulation of Heterotic Strings
We extend the recently constructed double field theory formulation of the
low-energy theory of the closed bosonic string to the heterotic string. The
action can be written in terms of a generalized metric that is a covariant
tensor under O(D,D+n), where n denotes the number of gauge vectors, and n
additional coordinates are introduced together with a covariant constraint that
locally removes these new coordinates. For the abelian subsector, the action
takes the same structural form as for the bosonic string, but based on the
enlarged generalized metric, thereby featuring a global O(D,D+n) symmetry.
After turning on non-abelian gauge couplings, this global symmetry is broken,
but the action can still be written in a fully O(D,D+n) covariant fashion, in
analogy to similar constructions in gauged supergravities.Comment: 28 pages, v2: minor changes, version published in JHE

Thermoelectric materials by using two-dimensional materials with negative correlation between electrical and thermal conductivity
In general, in thermoelectric materials the electrical conductivity sigma and thermal conductivity kappa are related and thus cannot be controlled independently. Previously, to maximize the thermoelectric figure of merit in state-of-the-art materials, differences in relative scaling between sigma and kappa as dimensions are reduced to approach the nanoscale were utilized. Here we present an approach to thermoelectric materials using tin disulfide, SnS2, nanosheets that demonstrated a negative correlation between sigma and kappa. In other words, as the thickness of SnS2 decreased, sigma increased whereas kappa decreased. This approach leads to a thermoelectric figure of merit increase to 0.13 at 300 K, a factor similar to 1,000 times greater than previously reported bulk single-crystal SnS2. The Seebeck coefficient obtained for our two-dimensional SnS2 nanosheets was 34.7mVK(-1) for 16-nm-thick samples at 300 K.114330Ysciescopu
Large Gauge Transformations in Double Field Theory
Finite gauge transformations in double field theory can be defined by the
exponential of generalized Lie derivatives. We interpret these transformations
as `generalized coordinate transformations' in the doubled space by proposing
and testing a formula that writes large transformations in terms of derivatives
of the coordinate maps. Successive generalized coordinate transformations give
a generalized coordinate transformation that differs from the direct
composition of the original two. Instead, it is constructed using the Courant
bracket. These transformations form a group when acting on fields but,
intriguingly, do not associate when acting on coordinates.Comment: 40 pages, v2: discussion of dilaton added, to appear in JHE
Quantitative analysis of single bacterial chemotaxis using a linear concentration gradient microchannel
A microfluidic device to quantify bacterial chemotaxis has been proposed, which generates a linear concentration gradient of chemoattractant in the main channel only by convective and molecular diffusion, and which enables the bacteria to enter the main channel in a single file by hydrodynamic focusing technique. The trajectory of each bacterium in response to the concentration gradient of chemoattractant is photographed by a CCD camera and its velocity is acquired by a simple PTV (Particle Tracking Velocimetry) algorithm. An advantage of this assay is to measure the velocity of a single bacterium and to quantify the degree of chemotaxis by analyzing the frequency of velocities concurrently. Thus, the parameter characterizing the motility of wild-type Escherichia coli strain RP437 in response to various concentration gradients of L-aspartate is obtained in such a manner that the degree of bacterial chemotaxis is quantified on the basis of a newly proposed Migration Index
Strings and branes are waves
We examine the equations of motion of double field theory and the duality
manifest form of M-theory. We show the solutions of the equations of motion
corresponding to null pp-waves correspond to strings or membranes from the
usual spacetime perspective. A Goldstone mode analysis of the null wave
solution in double field theory produces the equations of motion of the duality
manifest string.Comment: 31 pages, LaTex, v2 some typos corrected and refs adde
The K2K SciBar Detector
A new near detector, SciBar, for the K2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation
expe riment was installed to improve the measurement of neutrino energy
spectrum and to study neutrino interactions in the energy region around 1 GeV.
SciBar is a 'fully active' tracking detector with fine segmentation consisting
of plastic scintillator bars. The detector was constructed in summer 2003 and
is taking data since October 2003. The basic design and initial performance is
presented.Comment: 7 pages, 4figures, Contributed to Proceedings of the 10th Vienna
