    The effects of continuous compared to accumulated exercise on health: A meta-analytic review

    © 2019, The Author(s). Background: Public health guidelines suggest that physical activity can be accumulated in multiple short bouts dispersed through the day. A synthesis of the evidence for this approach is lacking. Objective: Our objective was to undertake a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine if exercise interventions consisting of a single bout of exercise compared with interventions comprising the same total duration, mode, and intensity of exercise accumulated over the course of the day have different effects on health outcomes in adults. Methods: Six electronic databases were searched (Jan 1970–29 August 2018). Two authors identified studies that evaluated the effects of a single bout of exercise compared with the same intensity, total duration, and mode of exercise accumulated in multiple bouts over the course of a day, in community-dwelling adults. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration tool. Pooled effects were reported as standardised mean differences (MDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using a random effects model. Results: A total of 19 studies involving 1080 participants met the inclusion criteria. There were no differences between accumulated and continuous groups for any cardiorespiratory fitness or blood pressure outcomes. A difference was found in body mass changes from baseline to post-intervention in favour of accumulated exercise compared with continuous (MD − 0.92 kg, 95% CI − 1.59 to − 0.25, I2 = 0%; five studies, 211 participants). In subgroup analyses, accumulating > 150 min of weekly exercise in multiple bouts per day resulted in small effects on body fat percentage (combined post-intervention and change from baseline values: MD − 0.87%, 95% CI − 1.71 to − 0.04, I2 = 0%; three studies, 166 participants) compared with 150 min of exercise amassed via single continuous bouts per day. There was a decrease in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol with accumulated versus continuous exercise (MD − 0.39 mmol/l, 95% CI − 0.73 to − 0.06, I2 = 23%; two studies, 41 participants). No differences were observed for any other blood biomarker (total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting blood glucose, and fasting insulin). Conclusions: There is no difference between continuous and accumulated patterns of exercise in terms of effects on fitness, blood pressure, lipids, insulin and glucose. There is some evidence from a small number of studies that changes in body mass and LDL cholesterol are more favourable following the accumulated condition. Collectively our findings suggest that adults are likely to accrue similar health benefits from exercising in a single bout or accumulating activity from shorter bouts throughout the day.     Urinary, bowel and sexual symptoms in a cohort of patients with Friedreich's ataxia

    BACKGROUND: Pelvic symptoms are distressing symptoms experienced by patients with Friedreich’s Ataxia (FRDA). The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), bowel and sexual symptoms in FRDA. METHODS: Questionnaire scores measuring LUTS, bowel and sexual symptoms were analysed with descriptive statistics as a cohort and as subgroups (Early/Late-onset and Early/Late-stage FRDA) They were also correlated with validated measures of disease severity including those of ataxia severity, non-ataxic symptoms and activities of daily living. RESULTS: 80% (n = 46/56) of patients reported LUTS, 64% (n = 38/59) reported bowel symptoms and 83% (n = 30/36) reported sexual symptoms. Urinary and bowel or sexual symptoms were significantly likely to co-exist among patients. Late-onset FRDA patients were also more likely to report LUTS than early-onset ones. Patients with a longer disease duration reported higher LUTS scores and poorer quality of life scores related to urinary symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: A high proportion of FRDA have symptoms suggestive of LUTS, bowel and sexual dysfunction. This is more marked with greater disease duration and later disease onset. These symptoms need to be addressed by clinicians as they can have a detrimental effect on patients

    Evaluating the landscape of fear between apex predatory sharks and mobile sea turtles across a large dynamic seascape

    The ‘‘landscape of fear’’ model has been proposed as a unifying concept in ecology, describing, in part, how animals behave and move about in their environment. The basic model predicts that as an animal’s landscape changes from low to high risk of predation, prey species will alter their behavior to risk avoidance. However, studies investigating and evaluating the landscape of fear model across large spatial scales (tens to hundreds of thousands of square kilometers) in dynamic, open, aquatic systems involving apex predators and highly mobile prey are lacking. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated predator–prey relationships between tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) and loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) in the North Atlantic Ocean. This included the use of satellite tracking to examine shark and turtle distributions as well as their surfacing behaviors under varying levels of home range overlap. Our findings revealed patterns that deviated from our a priori predictions based on the landscape of fear model. Specifically, turtles did not alter their surfacing behaviors to risk avoidance when overlap in shark–turtle core home range was high. However, in areas of high overlap with turtles, sharks exhibited modified surfacing behaviors that may enhance predation opportunity. We suggest that turtles may be an important factor in determining shark distribution, whereas for turtles, other life history trade-offs may play a larger role in defining their habitat use. We propose that these findings are a result of both biotic and physically driven factors that independently or synergistically affect predator–prey interactions in this system. These results have implications for evolutionary biology, community ecology, and wildlife conservation.     Efficacy evaluation of iclaprim in a neutropenic rat lung infection model with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus entrapped in alginate microspheres

    The objective of this study was to demonstrate the efficacy of iclaprim in a neutropenic rat lung infection model with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) entrapped in alginate beads. An inoculum of 5.25 × 10⁵ colony-forming units (CFU)/mL of S. aureus strain AH1252 was administered intratracheally to rats with prepared alginate bacteria suspensions. Beginning 2 h post-infection, rats received: (1) iclaprim 80 mg/kg (n = 16); (2) iclaprim 60 mg/kg (n = 16), or (3) vancomycin 50 mg/kg (n = 24), for 3 days via subcutaneous (SC) injection every 12 h. Twelve hours after the last treatment, rats were euthanized and lungs collected for CFU determination. Iclaprim administered at 80 mg/kg or 60 mg/kg or vancomycin 50 mg/kg SC twice a day for 3 days resulted in a 6.05 log10 CFU reduction (iclaprim 80 mg/kg compared with control, p < 0.0001), 5.11 log₁₀ CFU reduction (iclaprim 60 mg/kg compared with control, p < 0.0001), and 3.42 log₁₀ CFU reduction, respectively, from the controls (p < 0.0001). Iclaprim 80 mg/kg and 60 mg/kg resulted in 2.59 and 1.69 log₁₀ CFU reductions, respectively, from vancomycin-treated animals (80 mg/kg iclaprim vs. vancomycin, p = 0.0005; 60 mg/kg iclaprim vs. vancomycin, p = 0.07). Animals receiving iclaprim, vancomycin, and controls demonstrated 100%, 91.7%, and 48.3% survival, respectively. In this neutropenic rat S. aureus lung infection model, rats receiving iclaprim demonstrated a greater CFU reduction than the controls or those receiving vancomycin

    Bang-bang control of fullerene qubits using ultra-fast phase gates

    Quantum mechanics permits an entity, such as an atom, to exist in a superposition of multiple states simultaneously. Quantum information processing (QIP) harnesses this profound phenomenon to manipulate information in radically new ways. A fundamental challenge in all QIP technologies is the corruption of superposition in a quantum bit (qubit) through interaction with its environment. Quantum bang-bang control provides a solution by repeatedly applying `kicks' to a qubit, thus disrupting an environmental interaction. However, the speed and precision required for the kick operations has presented an obstacle to experimental realization. Here we demonstrate a phase gate of unprecedented speed on a nuclear spin qubit in a fullerene molecule (N@C60), and use it to bang-bang decouple the qubit from a strong environmental interaction. We can thus trap the qubit in closed cycles on the Bloch sphere, or lock it in a given state for an arbitrary period. Our procedure uses operations on a second qubit, an electron spin, in order to generate an arbitrary phase on the nuclear qubit. We anticipate the approach will be vital for QIP technologies, especially at the molecular scale where other strategies, such as electrode switching, are unfeasible
