One-step transformation of microorganisms
This project aims to develop products that simplify
the laboratory methods used for the genetic improvement of microorganisms with commercial potential that can be applied in biotechnology, in areas such as food industry, environment or energy. These products will constitute a new methodological
paradigm through its simplicity and will substitute classical procedures that are more time-consuming, more expensive and technically more demanding. Transformation of microorganisms
(introducing DNA into microorganisms for a genetic improvement) is a cumbersome procedure normally needing three main steps, namely: (1) preparation of microorganisms (weakening of natural
barriers to receive foreign DNA); (2) a shock step (normally through an electric pulse, jump in temperature or by using ultrasounds); and finally the (3) a recovery step in which the microorganisms
are grown in rich medium to recover from the previous step. With our technology we envisage attaining transformation in a single step through spreading microorganisms and foreign DNA on novel transformation petri-dishes
Coupled electromagnetic and thermal analysis of electric machines
Mestrado de dupla diplomação com a UTFPR - Universidade Tecnológica Federal do ParanáThe actual trend of the design process of electric machines is oriented to specific requirements of the application and is no longer based in a standard structure. From this point of view, the design procedure of electric machines became a multidisciplinary process, involving electromagnetic, thermal, and mechanical modelling in a highly iterative process between the different physics fields.
This dissertation deals with the design process of electric machines, proposing a coupling methodology for the electromagnetic and thermal models which are interrelated. The electromagnetic model establishes the main losses in electric machines: iron and resistive losses. These losses are, in turn, the main heat sources, responsible for heating and temperature distribution, i.e., the object of the thermal analysis, which affects recursively the losses, due to parameter’ dependency on temperature. Also, the machine temperature is crucial to maintain the lifetime of the machine. So, the coupled analysis is mandatory to achieve the nowadays requirements of higher energy efficiency and power density and cost reduction. Also, the coupled analysis enables optimization without the need to build several prototypes, making this process more time and cost-efficiency. Despite the temperature importance in electric machines, the thermal model was overlooked over the years. However, it has been receiving more attention in the past years.
In this work, the thermal modelling process is handled analytically and numerically through finite element analysis (FEA), which is also used to obtain the electromagnetic model. The modelling processes detailed during this work are applied into a case study of a single-phase transformer with the rated power of 1 kW. The numerical models were developed in the Ansys software suite, being the electromagnetic model developed in Ansys Maxwell while the thermal model has developed in Ansys Mechanical. At last, the coupling between the electromagnetic and thermal models was accomplished in Ansys Workbench.
The results obtained from the models are compared and validated with the experimental measurements of the losses and temperatures.
Deep learning and feature engineering techniques applied to the myoelectric signal for accurate prediction of movements
classificação (Convolutional Neural Network e Long Short-Term Memory) de forma híbrida,
A pesquisa obteve resultados
a criação de uma abordagem global, com uma precisão média de 97,83%.Pattern recognition techniques in the Myoelectric Signal (EMG) are employed in the
development of robotic prostheses, and for that, they adopt several approaches of Artificial
Intelligence (AI). This Thesis proposes to solve the problem of recognition of EMG standards
through the adoption of profound learning techniques in an optimized way. The research
developed an approach that extracts the characteristic a priori to feed the classifiers that
supposedly do not need this step. The study integrated the BioPatRec platform (advanced
prosthesis study and development) to two classification algorithms (Convolutional Neural
Network and Long Short-Term Memory) in a hybrid way, where the input provided to the
network already has characteristics that describe the movement (level of muscle activation,
magnitude, amplitude, power, and others). Thus, the signal is tracked as a time series instead
of an image, which allows us to eliminate a set of points irrelevant to the classifier, making the
information expressive. In the sequence, the methodology developed software that implements
the concept introduced using a Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) in parallel this increment
allowed the classification model to combine high precision with a training time of less than
1 second. The parallel model was called BioPatRec-Py and employed some Engineering
techniques of Features that managed to make the network entry more homogeneous, reducing
variability, noise, and standardizing distribution. The research obtained satisfactory results
and surpassed the other classification algorithms in most of the evaluated experiments. The
work performed a statistical analysis of the outcomes and fine-tuned the hyperparameters of
each of the networks. Ultimately, BioPatRec-Py provided a generic model. The network was
trained globally between individuals, allowing the creation of a standardized approach, with
an average accuracy of 97.83%
Advances in the control schemes for MR actuators
vices. In the essence, the hardware incorporates a valve being a solenoid with a flow channel. Supplying the current to the solenoid’s coil induces the magnetic field in the channel. As a results, the fluid transitions from a near-Newtonian one to a pseudo-solid. In the paper we show that significant improvements in the MR actuator dynamics can be achieved by exploring flux feedback control systems rather than current feedback ones. The flux-based approach would improve the system’s response time and its bandwidth as well as minimize the contribution of the eddy currents. Thus, numerical simulations have been carried out to test the original hypothesis. The obtained data (from co-simulations) prove that the proposed approach delivers good results although further research is required on further optimizing the controller’s gains and prior to building a real prototype. This research had received funding from the National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA Poland) grant no. Saber docente e experiências com feminismos: reconfigurações curriculares insurgentes
The consumption of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has been increasing every year, as well as its recycling process as the applications of recycled PET are diversified. However, the recycling companies are not able to recycle 100% of PET because the particles with low granulometry (refuse) are not utilized because they stick to the extruder screw and are discarded. This study presents the structural dimensioning of a proposal of an equipment to sinter this refuse in some predetermined geometries, in order to achieve possible commercial applications. This structural dimensioning was done with finite element analysis open-source software Salome Meca. Some structural modifications required to achieve the design requirements are presented. Yet, the hydraulic system to operate the compression was also dimensioned.O consumo de polietileno tereftalato (PET) vem aumentando a cada ano, bem como sua reciclagem, pois as aplicações do PET reciclado são bem diversificadas.

divulgar a produção científica no campo da Internacionalização do Ensino Superior e fortalecer a
ção Latino-Americana (UNILA - Brasil), a Universidad Nacional del Litoral (UNL - Argentina), a Uni-
desenvolvimento regional.

Comfort analysis comparison between Alfapendular and Intercity Portuguese trains at the north rail
Nowadays, trains are one of the most used public transportation modes. Comfort is the key to keeping and attracting new users. Vibration highly influences comfort levels and, once it is derived from the train motion it is stated as a primary concern. Due to contact with the seat and floor, passengers are subjected to whole-body vibration. ISO 2631 standard is fully dedicated to the evaluation of this type of vibration. Following its approach, the present research evaluates the comfort levels of Alfapendular and Intercity trains operating in Portugal at the Porto Campanhã – Lisbon Oriente connection. Measurements were performed at the beginning, middle, and end of the train, allowing a comparison between seat types within the same train and the same types from different trains. Results showed higher comfort levels for the Alfapendular trains, while for the Intercity train, both middle and end of train locations were ranked as “Little uncomfortable”. As a complementary analysis, it was observed the vibration transmission of the seat based on the Seat Effective Amplitude Transmissibility (SEAT). Results were above 100%, showing vibration amplification by all tested seats. Higher SEAT values were found for the Intercity train seat. This was the first study conducted on Portuguese trains regarding comfort analysis and vibration transmission. The first author thanks to Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) for a PhD scholarship under the project iRail (PD/BD/143161/2019). Generalized Information Criteria for Structured Sparse Models
Regularized m-estimators are widely used due to their ability of recovering a
low-dimensional model in high-dimensional scenarios. Some recent efforts on
this subject focused on creating a unified framework for establishing oracle
bounds, and deriving conditions for support recovery. Under this same
framework, we propose a new Generalized Information Criteria (GIC) that takes
into consideration the sparsity pattern one wishes to recover. We obtain
non-asymptotic model selection bounds and sufficient conditions for model
selection consistency of the GIC. Furthermore, we show that the GIC can also be
used for selecting the regularization parameter within a regularized
-estimation framework, which allows practical use of the GIC for model
selection in high-dimensional scenarios. We provide examples of group LASSO in
the context of generalized linear regression and low rank matrix regression
