    El discurso de odio en los medios televisivos españoles durante la primera semana de la Guerra en Ucrania (2022)

    Esta investigación estudia, a través del análisis de contenido, los discursos de odio emitidos en cuatro programas televisivos españoles durante la primera semana de la Guerra en Ucrania, y realiza una comparación entre dos formatos televisivos, el magazine y el infoshow, que ofrecen información de actualidad desde distintos puntos de vista. Tras el análisis de los programas El programa de Ana Rosa, Todo es Mentira, El Hormiguero y El Intermedio, emitidos entre el 24 de febrero de 2022 y el 3 de marzo de 2022 se ha podido determinar que los refugiados son el colectivo contra el que se han emitido más discursos de odio, aunque debido al contexto también ha habido una gran presencia de discursos de este tipo hacia la figura de Vladimir Putin, lo que muestra claramente la posición de los programas de televisión analizados respecto a este conflicto bélico.This research studies, through content analysis, the hate speech broadcast on four Spanish television programs during the first week of the Ukrainian War, and makes a comparison between two television formats, the magazine and the infoshow, which offer current information from different points of view.     Eye-tracking devices for virtual and augmented reality metaverse environments and their compatibility with the European Union general data protection regulation

    Even though the Metaverse from science fiction is not a reality yet, it is possible to take a glimpse into how it might look like. Several companies and platforms are currently working and developing their versions of how the Metaverse will look in a not-so-distant future. However, the current vision of the Metaverse does not only encompass software. A great deal of companies is complementing their Metaverse projects with Virtual and Augmented Reality devices such as headsets and glasses. In this line, one of the last technological advancements in virtual and augmented reality devices included the introduction of eye-tracking technology. However, when new and additional kinds of data are processed, emerging risks for data protection might arise. While there is an already incipient stream of scholarship that analyses the risks that eye-tracking devices might entail for privacy, such literature mostly focuses on the technical side. However, no scholarship, up to this moment, has examined such devices from a legal perspective and particularly from a data protection lens. This paper will, therefore, discuss the compatibility of eye-tracking devices for virtual and augmented reality environments with the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Being the GDPR considered a worldwide role model in terms of fundamental rights protection, the compatibility of such devices with one of the most severe data protection regimes will be put to the hardest test. The paper will do so by analyzing the state of the art of the technology, its use in headsets and glasses for virtual and augmented reality Metaverse environments, and the potential risks that such use might entail for data protection. After that, such risks will be confronted with the relevant applicable provisions of the GDPR. Finally, the paper will issue policy recommendations regarding the need for more interdisciplinary research on privacy-enhancing techniques to solve the privacyutility conundrum; careful monitoring of access to data by third parties, including data security and minimization requirements; more guidance from supranational Data Protection Authorities and more attention when designing privacy policies, especially for children

    Uso de los antisépticos en atención primaria

    ResumenLas heridas se pueden clasificar, según el mecanismo de acción, en quirúrgicas o traumáticas (que pueden ser incisas, como las provocadas por un objeto cortante; contusas, causadas por un objeto romo; punzantes, provocadas por objetos afilados y largos; por desgarro, causadas por tracción de los tejidos; por mordedura, que tienen alto riesgo de infección, por lo que no se deben suturar) o, por la evolución del proceso de cicatrización, en agudas o crónicas (úlceras por presión, úlceras vasculares, úlceras neuropáticas, heridas agudas con tórpida evolución). El empleo de antisépticos en cualquiera de los casos suele estar limitado a la limpieza y cuidados iniciales (48–72h) y al lavado de manos e instrumental, y su uso en heridas crónicas o cronificadas es más discutible. En el caso de quemaduras sucede lo mismo, y es más recomendable el empleo de formulaciones que favorezcan la hidratación.En población pediátrica se suele recomendar el empleo de antisépticos con un perfil de seguridad conocido y baja absorción, especialmente en el caso del cuidado del cordón umbilical, donde la evidencia recomienda el empleo de gluconato de clorhexidina.Otro uso de los antisépticos es el cuidado de heridas producidas por la implantación de objetos dentro de la estética corporal (piercing y similares), siendo recomendable el empleo de antisépticos transparentes que permitan observar la evolución de la técnica.AbstractWounds can be classified according to their mechanism of action into surgical or traumatic (which may be incision wounds, such as those provoked by a sharp object; contusions, caused by a blunt force; puncture wounds, caused by long, sharp objects; lacerations, caused by tears to the tissue; or bites, which have a high risk of infection and consequently should not be sutured). Wounds can also be classified by their healing process into acute or chronic (pressure ulcers, vascular ulcers, neuropathic ulcers, acute wounds with torpid clinical course). The use of antiseptics in any of these wounds is usually limited to cleaning and initial care —up to 48 hours— and to washing of hands and instruments. The use of antiseptics in chronic or persistent wounds is more debatable. The same is true of burns, in which the use of formulations that encourage hydration is recommended.In the pediatric population, the use of antiseptics with a known safety profile and low absorption is usually recommended, especially in the care of the umbilical cord, in which evidence supports the use of chlorhexidine gluconate.Another use of antiseptics is the care of wounds produced by procedures used in body esthetics, such as piercings; in these procedures, it is advisable to use transparent antiseptics that allow visualization of the technique

    Mechanical compartmentalization of the intestinal organoid enables crypt folding and collective cell migration

    Intestinal organoids capture essential features of the intestinal epithelium such as crypt folding, cellular compartmentalization and collective movements. Each of these processes and their coordination require patterned forces that are at present unknown. Here we map three-dimensional cellular forces in mouse intestinal organoids grown on soft hydrogels. We show that these organoids exhibit a non-monotonic stress distribution that defines mechanical and functional compartments. The stem cell compartment pushes the extracellular matrix and folds through apical constriction, whereas the transit amplifying zone pulls the extracellular matrix and elongates through basal constriction. The size of the stem cell compartment depends on the extracellular-matrix stiffness and endogenous cellular forces. Computational modelling reveals that crypt shape and force distribution rely on cell surface tensions following cortical actomyosin density. Finally, cells are pulled out of the crypt along a gradient of increasing tension. Our study unveils how patterned forces enable compartmentalization, folding and collective migration in the intestinal epithelium.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Acidification induces condensation of the adenovirus core

    The adenovirus (AdV) icosahedral capsid encloses a nucleoprotein core formed by the dsDNA genome bound to numerous copies of virus-encoded, positively charged proteins. For an efficient delivery of its genome, AdV must undergo a cascade of dismantling events from the plasma membrane to the nuclear pore. Throughout this uncoating process, the virion moves across potentially disruptive environments whose influence in particle stability is poorly understood. In this work we analyze the effect of acidic conditions on AdV particles by exploring their mechanical properties, genome accessibility and capsid disruption. Our results show that under short term acidification the AdV virion becomes softer and its genome less accessible to an intercalating dye, even in the presence of capsid openings. The AFM tip penetrates deeper in virions at neutral pH, and mechanical properties of genome-less particles are not altered upon acidification. Altogether, these results indicate that the main effect of acidification is the compaction of the nucleoproteic core, revealing a previously unknown role for chemical cues in AdV uncoating. Statement of significance: Studying the behavior of virus particles under changing environmental conditions is key to understand cell entry and propagation. One such change is the acidification undergone in certain cell compartments, which is thought to play a role in the programmed uncoating of virus genomes. Mild acidification in the early endosome has been proposed as a trigger signal for human AdV uncoating. However, the actual effect of low pH in AdV stability and entry is not well defined.     Position statement on the Joint ITA–NIST–USPTO collaboration initiative regarding standards : notice of public listening and request for comments

    On 11th September 2023, the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the International Trade Administration (ITA), and the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) called for stakeholder input on the current state of U.S. firm participation in standard-setting, and the ability of U.S. industry to readily adopt standards to grow and compete, especially as they relate to the standardisation of critical and emerging technologies. The Centre for a Digital Society (CDS) of the European University Institute (EUI) is thankful for the opportunity to offer its comments. We would like to express our view on the legislative proposal of the European Commission (EC) for a Regulation on Standard Essential Patents (hereinafter, the Regulation) as it relates to question no. 1 of the Request for Comments on the impact of foreign IPR policies on US leadership and participation in international standard setting.     Bariatric surgery in women in reproductive age: recommendations from the “Diabetes and Pregnancy” and “Diabetes and Obesity” working committees from the Argentine Society of Diabetes

    El incremento de la obesidad en el mundo, a edades más tempranas, ha tenido un impacto negativo especialmente en las mujeres en edad reproductiva. Se ven afectadas tanto la fertilidad como la tasa de embarazos de riesgo, de niños con bajo peso al nacer, pretérmino e índice de cesáreas. La cirugía bariátrica como alternativa de tratamiento de la obesidad ha mejorado la fertilidad, pero el trastorno malabsortivo que provoca modifica la absorción de nutrientes en la madre y en el feto. El diagnóstico de diabetes gestacional se dificulta dado que la prueba de tolerancia oral a la glucosa estaría contraindicada en estos casos. El objetivo de estas recomendaciones es proveer herramientas para el control y seguimiento de mujeres en edad reproductiva sometidas a cirugía bariátrica.Worldwide increased obesity prevalence at early ages particularly affects women of reproductive ages. Both fertility and risk pregnancy rates are affected, of low birth weight infants, prematures and cesarean section rates have been modified considerably. Bariatric surgery is a validated tool to improve fertility but nutrient malabsorption as a consequence of surgery could affect mother and fetus nutrition and development. Gestational diabetes diagnosis turns difficult in this group of obese patients after bariatric surgery since oral glucose tolerance testing would be contraindicated in these cases.     Position statement on the European Commission’s proposal for a SEPs regulation

    On 27th April 2023, the European Commission published a proposal for a Regulation on Standard Essential Patents (hereinafter, SEPs Regulation) and allowed the public to provide feedback. The Centre for a Digital Society (CDS) of the European University Institute (EUI) is thankful for the opportunity to offer its comments and make suggestions on the proposed Regulation. Our team of researchers has significant research, policy and training experience in the areas of intellectual property, telecommunications regulation, standardisation and EU competition policy. In this Position Statement, we caution against adopting the proposed SEPs Regulation in its current form and suggest adopting guidance under Arts. 101 and 102 TFEU to clarify how SEP licensing should occur not to breach EU competition law. In the sub-optimal scenario where EU institutions would continue to pursue an immediate regulatory intervention, we provide substantial suggestions in an attempt to improve the current proposal of SEPs Regulation and limit certain negative consequences. Our constructive criticism aims to be a catalyst for the debate in the legislative process about the appropriate SEP licensing framework

    Ambient air pollution and thyroid function in Spanish adults. A nationwide population-based study ([email protected] study)

    Background Recent reports have suggested that air pollution may impact thyroid function, although the evidence is still scarce and inconclusive. In this study we evaluated the association of exposure to air pollutants to thyroid function parameters in a nationwide sample representative of the adult population of Spain. Methods The [email protected] study is a national, cross-sectional, population-based survey which was conducted in 2008-2010 using a random cluster sampling of the Spanish population. The present analyses included 3859 individuals, without a previous thyroid disease diagnosis, and with negative thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO Abs) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels of 0.1-20 mIU/L. Participants were assigned air pollution concentrations for particulate matter <2.5 mu m (PM2.5) and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), corresponding to the health examination year, obtained by means of modeling combined with measurements taken at air quality stations (CHIMERE chemistry-transport model). TSH, free thyroxine (FT4), free triiodothyronine (FT3) and TPO Abs concentrations were analyzed using an electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (Modular Analytics E170 Roche). Results In multivariate linear regression models, there was a highly significant negative correlation between PM2.5 concentrations and both FT4 (p<0.001), and FT3 levels (p<0.001). In multivariate logistic regression, there was a significant association between PM2.5 concentrations and the odds of presenting high TSH [OR 1.24 (1.01-1.52) p=0.043], lower FT4 [OR 1.25 (1.02-1.54) p=0.032] and low FT3 levels [1.48 (1.19-1.84) p=<0.001] per each IQR increase in PM2.5 (4.86 mu g/m(3)). There was no association between NO2 concentrations and thyroid hormone levels. No significant heterogeneity was seen in the results between groups of men, pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women.
