A theory-grounded framework of Open Source Software adoption in SMEs

However, there has been little focus on developing valid frameworks that enable critical evaluation and common understanding of factors influencing OSS adoption. This paper seeks to address this shortcoming by presenting a theory-grounded framework for exploring these factors and explaining their influence on OSS adoption, with the context of study being small- to medium-sized Information Technology (IT) businesses in the U.K. The framework has implications for this type of business â and, we will suggest, more widely â as a frame of reference for understanding, and as tool for evaluating benefits and challenges in, OSS adoption. It also offers researchers a structured way of investigating adoption issues and a base from which to develop models of OSS adoption. The study reported in this paper used the Decomposed Theory of Planned Behaviour (DTPB) as a basis for the research propositions, with the aim of: (i) developing a framework of empirical factors that influence OSS adoption; and (ii) appraising it through case study evaluation with 10 U.K. Small- to medium-sized enterprises in the IT sector. The demonstration of the capabilities of the framework suggests that it is able to provide a reliable explanation of the complex and subjective factors that influence attitudes, subjective norms and control over the use of OSS. The paper further argues that the DTPB proved useful in this research area and that it can provide a variety of situation-specific insights related to factors that influence the adoption of OSS
A comparison of walk-in counselling and the wait list model for delivering counselling services
Background: Walk-in counselling has been used to reduce wait times but there are few controlled studies to compare outcomes between walk-in and the traditional model of service delivery.
Aims: To compare change in psychological distress by clients receiving services from two models of service delivery, a walk-in counselling model and a traditional counselling model involving a wait list
Method: Mixed methods sequential explanatory design including quantitative comparison of groups with one pre-test and two follow ups, and qualitative analysis of interviews with a subsample. 524 participants 16 years and older were recruited from two Family Counselling Agencies; the General Health Questionnaire assessed change in psychological distress; prior use of other mental health and instrumental services was also reported.
Results: Hierarchical linear modelling revealed clients of the walk-in model improved faster and were less distressed at the 4-week follow-up compared to the traditional service delivery model. At the 10-week follow-up, both groups had improved and were similar. Participants receiving instrumental services prior to baseline improved more slowly. Qualitative interviews confirmed participants valued the accessibility of the walk-in model.
Conclusions: This study improves methodologically on previous studies of walk-in counselling, an approach to service delivery that is not conducive to randomized controlled trials
Secondary user relations in emerging mobile computing environments
Mobile technologies are enabling access to information in diverse environ.ments, and are exposing a wider group of individuals to said technology. Therefore, this paper proposes that a wider view of user relations than is usually considered in information systems research is required. Specifically, we examine the potential effects of emerging mobile technologies on end-Ââuser relations with a focus on the âsecondary userâ, those who are not intended to interact directly with the technology but are intended consumers of the technologyâs output. For illustration, we draw on a study of a U.K. regional Fire and Rescue Service and deconstruct mobile technology use at Fire Service incidents. Our findings provide insights, which suggest that, because of the nature of mobile technologies and their context of use, secondary user relations in such emerging mobile environments are important and need further exploration
Institutional reform and FDI decision in transition economies: a qualitative study of Syria
The article considers the impact of institutional reform on the decision of foreign enterprises and foreign entrepreneurs
to directly invest in the transition economy of Syria. It responds to the calls for more open research design that can go
beyond the borders of the quantitative findings of previous econometric research by adopting a qualitative research
strategy. The results reveal that institutional reforms enhanced Syriaâs attractiveness to foreign direct investment.
Institutional barriers proved to be less daunting to foreign investors whose backgrounds were culturally similar to that
of Syria and/or already had experience in Syria or in a similar type of economy. The impact of background similarity and
previous experience in similar contexts appeared to be less important when the foreign investor was a multinational
enterprise than for individual entrepreneur. Moreover, these factors also appeared to be less important for large
enterprises compared to small enterprises
Quantum oscillations of nitrogen atoms in uranium nitride
The vibrational excitations of crystalline solids corresponding to acoustic
or optic one phonon modes appear as sharp features in measurements such as
neutron spectroscopy. In contrast, many-phonon excitations generally produce a
complicated, weak, and featureless response. Here we present time-of-flight
neutron scattering measurements for the binary solid uranium nitride (UN),
showing well-defined, equally-spaced, high energy vibrational modes in addition
to the usual phonons. The spectrum is that of a single atom, isotropic quantum
harmonic oscillator and characterizes independent motions of light nitrogen
atoms, each found in an octahedral cage of heavy uranium atoms. This is an
unexpected and beautiful experimental realization of one of the fundamental,
exactly-solvable problems in quantum mechanics. There are also practical
implications, as the oscillator modes must be accounted for in the design of

A Personalized Self-Management Rehabilitation System with an Intelligent Shoe for Stroke Survivors: A Realist Evaluation
Background: In the United Kingdom, stroke is the most significant cause of adult disability. Stroke survivors are frequently
left with physical and psychological changes that can profoundly affect their functional ability, independence, and social
participation. Research suggests that long-term, intense, task- and context-specific rehabilitation that is goal-oriented and
environmentally enriched improves function, independence, and quality of life after a stroke. It is recommended that rehabilitation
should continue until maximum recovery has been achieved. However, the increasing demand on services and financial constraints
means that needs cannot be met through traditional face-to-face delivery of rehabilitation. Using a participatory design methodology,
we developed an information communication technologyâenhanced Personalized Self-Managed rehabilitation System (PSMrS)
for stroke survivors with integrated insole sensor technology within an âintelligent shoe.â. The intervention model was based
around a rehabilitation paradigm underpinned by theories of motor relearning and neuroplastic adaptation, motivational feedback,
self-efficacy, and knowledge transfer.
Objective: To understand the conditions under which this technology-based rehabilitation solution would most likely have an
impact on the motor behavior of the user, what would work for whom, in what context, and how. We were interested in what
aspects of the system would work best to facilitate the motor behavior change associated with self-managed rehabilitation and
which user characteristics and circumstances of use could promote improved functional outcomes.
Methods: We used a Realist Evaluation (RE) framework to evaluate the final prototype PSMrS with the assumption that the
intervention consists of a series of configurations that include the Context of use, the underlying Mechanisms of change and the
potential Outcomes or impacts (CMOs). We developed the CMOs from literature reviews and engagement with clinicians, users,
and caregivers during a series of focus groups and home visits. These CMOs were then tested in five in-depth case studies with
stroke survivors and their caregivers.
Results: While two new propositions emerged, the second importantly related to the self-management aspects of the system.
The study revealed that the system should also encourage independent use and the setting of personalized goals or activities.
Conclusions: Information communication technology that purports to support the self-management of stroke rehabilitation
should give significant consideration to the need for motivational feedback that provides quantitative, reliable, accurate,
context-specific, and culturally sensitive information about the achievement of personalized goal-based activities
R&D consortia as boundary organisations: Misalignment and asymmetry of boundary management
The paper presents a qualitative multiple case study of three multilateral public-private R&D consortia representing different industrial sectors. Using the practice-based view as a theoretical lens, we explore the interplay between the deliberate and emergent practices of boundary management across the following three dimensions: (1) Boundary bridging focus; (2) boundary crossing arrangements; and (3) collaborative governance arrangements. Drawing on interviews, documentary analysis and observational data, we describe the misalignment between the deliberate and emergent aspects of boundary management, which can be caused by the funders' reporting requirements, power differentials between collaborators and lack of contextual understanding. These factors, accompanied by path-dependency and confidentiality issues, may result in asymmetrical boundary management, whereby a selective focus on a specific boundary (or set of boundaries) combined with an unequal development of boundary bridges within the collaboration may lead to the crossing of some boundaries being prioritised at the expense of others
Structural basis for the RING catalyzed synthesis of K63 linked ubiquitin chains

Here we report the structure of the RING domain dimer of rat RNF4 in complex with a human Ubc13~Ub conjugate and Ube2V2. The structure has captured Ube2V2 bound to the acceptor (priming) ubiquitin with Lys63 in a position that could lead to attack on the linkage between the donor (second) ubiquitin and Ubc13 that is held in the active âfolded backâ conformation by the RING domain of RNF4. The interfaces identified in the structure were verified by in vitro ubiquitination assays of site directed mutants. This represents the first view of the synthesis of Lys63 linked ubiquitin chains in which both substrate ubiquitin and ubiquitin-loaded E2 are juxtaposed to allow E3 ligase mediated catalysis.PostprintPeer reviewe
Heritage branding orientation: The case of Ach. Brito and the dynamics between corporate and product heritage brands
The notion of heritage branding orientation is introduced and explicated. Heritage branding orientation is designated as embracing both product and corporate brands and differs from corporate heritage brand orientation which has an explicit corporate focus. Empirical insights are drawn from an in-depth and longitudinal case study of Ach. Brito, a celebrated Portuguese manufacturer of soaps and toiletries. This study shows how, by the pursuance of a strategy derived from a heritage branding orientation Ach. Brito â after a prolonged period of decline â achieved a dramatic strategic turnaround. The findings reveal how institutional heritage can be a strategic resource via its adoption and activation at both the product and corporate levels. Moreover, the study showed how the bi-lateral interplay between product and corporate brand levels can be mutually reinforcing. In instrumental terms, the study shows how heritage can be activated and articulated in different ways. For instance, it can re-position both product and/or corporate brands; it can be meaningfully informed by product brand heritage and shape corporate heritage; and can be of strategic importance to both medium-sized and small enterprises
