The «resemantization» of the concept tragedy in Golden Age literature supplies evidence that the greek standard has been changed for a new pattern in which the héroe 's horror and hesitation are deliberately softened. An outstanding instance of this process is in No hay resistencia a los hados, a play by Alejandro Arboreda (1650-1698), a dramatist from Valencia, in which the sophocleam Oedipus is re-located into a spanish XVIIth century context
Study and texts of the poetic controversy between Jaime Orts and Melchor Orta from the Academia de los Nocturnos to the poetic contest to saint Vicente Ferrer (1600)
In the late XVIIth Century there were up to 24 "Academias" in Valencia, the Academia de los Nocturnos, the Adorantes, and the Montañeses del Parnaso being the most prominent. This article includes two unknown texts by Lorenzo Mateu in which a new "academia" -this typical baroque phenomenon- is announced
The Mean Metal-line Absorption Spectrum of DLAs in BOSS
We study the mean absorption spectrum of the Damped Lyman alpha population at
by stacking normalized, rest-frame shifted spectra of DLAs from the DR12 of BOSS/SDSS-III. We measure the equivalent widths
of 50 individual metal absorption lines in 5 intervals of DLA hydrogen column
density, 5 intervals of DLA redshift, and overall mean equivalent widths for an
additional 13 absorption features from groups of strongly blended lines. The
mean equivalent width of low-ionization lines increases with ,
whereas for high-ionization lines the increase is much weaker. The mean metal
line equivalent widths decrease by a factor from to
, with small or no differences between low- and high-ionization
species. We develop a theoretical model, inspired by the presence of multiple
absorption components observed in high-resolution spectra, to infer mean metal
column densities from the equivalent widths of partially saturated metal lines.
We apply this model to 14 low-ionization species and to AlIII, SIII, SiIII,
CIV, SiIV, NV and OVI. We use an approximate derivation for separating the
equivalent width contributions of several lines to blended absorption features,
and infer mean equivalent widths and column densities from lines of the
additional species NI, ZnII, CII, FeIII, and SIV. Several of these mean
column densities of metal lines in DLAs are obtained for the first time; their
values generally agree with measurements of individual DLAs from
high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra when they are available.Comment: Resubmitted after referee revision. Added evolution of metal-line
equivalent widths with redshift (Section 5). Added assessment of result
dependencies on sample and methodology. Comparison of relative abundances of
DLAs vs Milky Way ISM and halo (Figure 16). Publicly available videos of

Hydrodynamics from the Dp-brane
We complete the computation of viscous transport coefficients in the near
horizon geometries that arise from a stack of black Dp-branes for p=2,...,6 in
the decoupling limit. The main new result is the obtention of the bulk
viscosity which, for all p, is found to be related to the speed of sound by the
simple relation \zeta/\eta = -2(v_s^2-1/p). For completeness the shear
viscosity is rederived from gravitational perturbations in the shear and scalar
channels. We comment on technical issues like the counterterms needed, or the
possible dependence on the conformal frame.Comment: 15 page
AGN Black Hole Masses and Bolometric Luminosities
Black hole mass, along with mass accretion rate, is a fundamental property of
active galactic nuclei. Black hole mass sets an approximate upper limit to AGN
energetics via the Eddington limit. We collect and compare all AGN black hole
mass estimates from the literature; these 177 masses are mostly based on the
virial assumption for the broad emission lines, with the broad-line region size
determined from either reverberation mapping or optical luminosity. We
introduce 200 additional black hole mass estimates based on properties of the
host galaxy bulges, using either the observed stellar velocity dispersion or
using the fundamental plane relation to infer ; these methods assume
that AGN hosts are normal galaxies. We compare 36 cases for which black hole
mass has been generated by different methods and find, for individual objects,
a scatter as high as a couple of orders of magnitude. The less direct the
method, the larger the discrepancy with other estimates, probably due to the
large scatter in the underlying correlations assumed. Using published fluxes,
we calculate bolometric luminosities for 234 AGNs and investigate the relation
between black hole mass and luminosity. In contrast to other studies, we find
no significant correlation of black hole mass with luminosity, other than those
induced by circular reasoning in the estimation of black hole mass. The
Eddington limit defines an approximate upper envelope to the distribution of
luminosities, but the lower envelope depends entirely on the sample of AGN
included. For any given black hole mass, there is a range in Eddington ratio of
up to three orders of magnitude.Comment: 43 pages with 10 figures. Accepted for publication in Ap
The young stellar population of NGC 4214 as observed with HST. II. Results
We present the results of a detailed UV-optical study of the nearby dwarf
starburst galaxy NGC 4214 using multifilter HST/WFPC2+STIS photometry. The
stellar extinction is found to be quite patchy, with some areas having values
of E(4405-5495)< 0.1 mag and others, associated with star forming regions, much
more heavily obscured, a result which is consistent with previous studies of
the nebular extinction. We determined the ratio of blue-to-red supergiants and
found it to be consistent with theoretical models for the metallicity of the
SMC. The stellar IMF of the field in the range 20-100 solar masses is found to
be steeper than Salpeter. A number of massive clusters and associations with
ages between a few and 200 million years are detected and their properties are
discussed.Comment: 49 pages, 12 figures, 6 table
Shear viscosity from R-charged AdS black holes
We compute the shear viscosity in the supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory dual
to the STU background. This is a thermal gauge theory with a chemical
potential. The quotient of the shear viscosity over the entropy density
exhibits no deviation from the well known result 1/4\pi.Comment: 9 pages, some references updated, abstract and some typos correcte
