    A MATCHING MODEL OF CROWDING-OUT AND ON-THE- JOB SEARCH (WITH AN APPLICATION TO SPAIN)

    This paper considers a matching model of heterogenous and jobs which includes on-the-job search. High-educated workers transitorily accept unskilled jobs and continue to search for skilled jobs. We study the implications of this model for the unemployment rates of high and low-educated workers, for the share of mismatched workers and wage nequality both within and between skill groups. The model is used to shed light on the Spanish experience following a large educational upgrading since the mid-eighties.

    Instability of a Pseudo-Relativistic Model of Matter with Self-Generated Magnetic Field

    For a pseudo-relativistic model of matter, based on the no-pair Hamiltonian, we prove that the inclusion of the interaction with the self-generated magnetic field leads to instability for all positive values of the fine structure constant. This is true no matter whether this interaction is accounted for by the Breit potential, by an external magnetic field which is chosen to minimize the energy, or by the quantized radiation field.Comment: 13 pages, AMS-LaTe

    Dual employment protection legislation : a framework for analysis

    In many countries, Employment Protection Legislation (EPL) establishes different regulations for certain groups of workers who face more disadvantages in the labor market (young workers, women, unskilled workers, etc.) with the aim of improving their employability. Well-known examples are the introduction of atypical employment contracts (e.g., temporary and determined-duration contracts) which ease firing restrictions for some, but not all, workers. This paper discusses the effects of EPL varying among workers of different skills on the level and composition of unemployment, job flows, productivity and welfare. By using an extension of Mortensen-Pissarides’ (1994) search model where heterogeneous workers compete for the same jobs, we are able to identify several key channels through which changing firing costs for some groups of workers affects hiring and firing of all workers and, hence, may have a different impact on aggregate labor market variables than reducing firing costs across the board. Some analytical and simulation results also show that these effects of differentiated firing costs by workers’ skills may be different depending upon the initial state of the labor market.[resumen de autor

    Stress and heat flux via automatic differentiation

    Machine-learning potentials provide computationally efficient and accurate approximations of the Born-Oppenheimer potential energy surface. This potential determines many materials properties and simulation techniques usually require its gradients, in particular forces and stress for molecular dynamics, and heat flux for thermal transport properties. Recently developed potentials feature high body order and can include equivariant semi-local interactions through message-passing mechanisms. Due to their complex functional forms, they rely on automatic differentiation (AD), overcoming the need for manual implementations or finite-difference schemes to evaluate gradients. This study demonstrates a unified AD approach to obtain forces, stress, and heat flux for such potentials, and provides a model-independent implementation. The method is tested on the Lennard-Jones potential, and then applied to predict cohesive properties and thermal conductivity of tin selenide using an equivariant message-passing neural network potential.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, 6 tables, excluding supplement (3 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables).     Crossover Scaling Functions in One Dimensional Dynamic Growth Models

    The crossover from Edwards-Wilkinson (s=0s=0) to KPZ (s>0s>0) type growth is studied for the BCSOS model. We calculate the exact numerical values for the k=0k=0 and 2π/N2\pi/N massgap for N≤18N\leq 18 using the master equation. We predict the structure of the crossover scaling function and confirm numerically that m0≃4(π/N)2[1+3u2(s)N/(2π2)]0.5m_0\simeq 4 (\pi/N)^2 [1+3u^2(s) N/(2\pi^2)]^{0.5} and m1≃2(π/N)2[1+u2(s)N/π2]0.5m_1\simeq 2 (\pi/N)^2 [1+ u^2(s) N/\pi^2]^{0.5}, with u(1)=1.03596967u(1)=1.03596967.     Pooled Time Series Modeling Reveals Smoking Habit Memory Pattern

    Smoking is a habit that is hard to break because nicotine is highly addictive and smoking behavior is strongly linked to multiple daily activities and routines. Here, we explored the effect of gender, age, day of the week, and previous smoking on the number of cigarettes smoked on any given day. Data consisted of daily records of the number of cigarettes participants smoked over an average period of 84 days. The sample included smokers (36 men and 26 women), aged between 18 and 26 years, who smoked at least five cigarettes a day and had smoked for at least 2 years. A panel data analysis was performed by way of multilevel pooled time series modeling. Smoking on any given day was a function of the number of cigarettes smoked on the previous day, and 2, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, and 56 days previously, and the day of the week. Neither gender nor age influenced this pattern, with no multilevel effects being detected, thus the behavior of all participants fitted the same smoking model. These novel findings show empirically that smoking behavior is governed by firmly established temporal dependence patterns and inform temporal parameters for the rational design of smoking cessation programs

    Lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, and stable-isotope stratigraphy of cores from ODP Leg 105 site surveys, Labrador Sea and Baffin Bay

    Trigger weight (TWC) and piston (PC) cores obtained from surveys of the three sites drilled during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 105 were studied in detail for benthic foraminiferal assemblages, total carbonate (all sites), planktonic foraminiferal abundances (Sites 645 and 647), and stable isotopes (Sites 646 and 647). These high-resolution data provide the link between modern environmental conditions represented by the sediment in the TWC and the uppermost cores of the ODP holes. This link provides essential control data for interpretating late Pleistocene paleoceanographic records from these core holes. At Site 645 in Baffin Bay, local correlation is difficult because the area is dominated by ice-rafted deposits and by debris flows and/or turbidite sedimentation. At the two Labrador Sea sites (646 and 647), the survey cores and uppermost ODP cores can be correlated. High-resolution data from the site survey cores also provide biostratigraphic data that refine the interpretations compiled from core-catcher samples at each ODP site
