On the multiplicity of ALMA Compact Array counterparts of far-infrared bright quasars
We present ALMA Atacama Compact Array (ACA) 870 micron continuum maps of 28
infrared-bright SDSS quasars with Herschel/SPIRE detections at redshifts 2-4,
the largest such sample ever observed with ALMA. The ACA detections are centred
on the SDSS coordinates to within 1 arcsec for about 80 per cent of the sample.
Larger offsets indicate that the far-infrared (FIR) emission detected by
Herschel might come from a companion source. The majority of the objects (about
70 per cent) have unique ACA counterparts within the SPIRE beam down to 3-4
arcsec resolution. Only 30 per cent of the sample shows clear evidence for
multiple sources with secondary counterparts contributing to the total 870
micron flux within the SPIRE beam to at least 25 per cent. We discuss the
limitations of the data based on simulated pairs of point-like sources at the
resolution of the ACA and present an extensive comparison of our findings with
recent works on the multiplicities of sub-millimetre galaxies. We conclude
that, despite the coarse resolution of the ACA, our data support the idea that,
for a large fraction of FIR-bright quasars, the sub-mm emission comes from
single sources. Our results suggest that, on average, optically bright quasars
with strong FIR emission are not triggered by early-stage mergers but are,
instead, together with their associated star formation rates, the outcome of
either late-stage mergers or secular processes.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figure
An effective action for asymptotically safe gravity
Asymptotically safe theories of gravitation have received great attention in
recent times. In this framework an effective action embodying the basic
features of the renormalized flow around the non-gaussian fixed point is
derived and its implications for the early universe are discussed. In
particular, a "landscape" of a countably infinite number of cosmological
inflationary solutions characterized by an unstable de Sitter phase lasting for

Quantum Interference in Single Molecule Electronic Systems
We present a general analytical formula and an ab initio study of quantum
interference in multi-branch molecules. Ab initio calculations are used to
investigate quantum interference in a benzene-1,2-dithiolate (BDT) molecule
sandwiched between gold electrodes and through oligoynes of various lengths. We
show that when a point charge is located in the plane of a BDT molecule and its
position varied, the electrical conductance exhibits a clear interference
effect, whereas when the charge approaches a BDT molecule along a line normal
to the plane of the molecule and passing through the centre of the phenyl ring,
interference effects are negligible. In the case of olygoynes, quantum
interference leads to the appearance of a critical energy , at which the
electron transmission coefficient of chains with even or odd numbers of
atoms is independent of length. To illustrate the underlying physics, we derive
a general analytical formula for electron transport through multi-branch
structures and demonstrate the versatility of the formula by comparing it with
the above ab-initio simulations. We also employ the analytical formula to
investigate the current inside the molecule and demonstrate that large counter
currents can occur within a ring-like molecule such as BDT, when the point
charge is located in the plane of the molecule. The formula can be used to
describe quantum interference and Fano resonances in structures with branches
containing arbitrary elastic scattering regions connected to nodal sites.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figure
Language documentation and archives in South America
This paper addresses a set of issues related to language documentation that are not often explicitly dealt with in academic publications, yet are highly important for the development and success of this new discipline. These issues include embedding language documentation in the socio-political context not only at the community level but also at the national level, the ethical and technical challenges of digital language archives, and the importance of regional and international cooperation among documentation activities. These issues play a major role in the initiative to set up a network of regional language archives in three South American countries, which this paper reports on. Local archives for data on endangered languages have recently been set up in Iquitos (Peru), Buenos Aires (Argentina), and in various locations in Brazil. An important feature of these is that they provide fast and secure access to linguistic and cultural data for local researchers and the language communities. They also make data safer by allowing for regular update procedures within the network
Fractal space-times under the microscope: A Renormalization Group view on Monte Carlo data
The emergence of fractal features in the microscopic structure of space-time
is a common theme in many approaches to quantum gravity. In this work we carry
out a detailed renormalization group study of the spectral dimension and
walk dimension associated with the effective space-times of
asymptotically safe Quantum Einstein Gravity (QEG). We discover three scaling
regimes where these generalized dimensions are approximately constant for an
extended range of length scales: a classical regime where , a
semi-classical regime where , and the UV-fixed point
regime where . On the length scales covered by
three-dimensional Monte Carlo simulations, the resulting spectral dimension is
shown to be in very good agreement with the data. This comparison also provides
a natural explanation for the apparent puzzle between the short distance
behavior of the spectral dimension reported from Causal Dynamical
Triangulations (CDT), Euclidean Dynamical Triangulations (EDT), and Asymptotic

A double-edged sword: Residents' views on the health consequences of gentrification in Porto, Portugal
Gentrification is currently shaping the urban environment in important ways. It also contributes to shaping the health of the inhabitants of gentrifying cities, although it is still unclear how. Gentrification processes are often linked to different drivers and have specific local translations, further complicating the study of the relationship between gentrification and health. We investigated this relationship in Porto, Portugal, a southern European city undergoing rampant transnational gentrification. In order to study how gentrification impacts health from the point of view of that city's residents, we conducted a study using photovoice with a sample of participants recruited from a population-based cohort, which was divided into three different groups: one from gentrifying areas of Porto, another from deprived non-gentrifying areas, and the other from affluent areas. The thematic analysis of data generated six themes, each referring to a change, or a set of connected changes, related to gentrification: increasing floating population, lack of housing access and displacement, construction and rehabilitation, changing local commerce, loss of place, and broader socioeconomic change. According to the accounts from participants, these changes affect health in different ways, both beneficial and harmful. Participants also reflected on how to act on this issue. Leptospirosis. 3: Aislamiento de una cepa de leptospira del grupo canícola, de fetos porcinos.
Esta es una comunicación de un brote de leptospirosis en una porqueriza cuyo síntoma aparente y el único que se presentó fue el aborto en el 95 por ciento de las cerdas. Se hizo el aislamiento de una cepa de leptospira del grupo canícola de fetos de cerdas de una porqueriza de la Sabana de Bogotá, Colombia. De 37 hembras en gestación, abortaron 35 en un período de mes y medio. De los 6 fetos recibidos se extrajeron el contenido estomacal y los riñones en forma aséptica, los fetos se sometieron a exámenes bacteriológicos rutinarios y a exámenes para brucelosis, vibrosis y trichomoniasis. En el estudio epizootiológico no se pudo establecer la fuente de contagio. Se hizo el estudió serológico de 16 sueros de hembras que habían abortado, reaccionando todas a título alto con la cepa homóloga y el serogrupo canícola de referencia. Se presentaron reacciones cruzadas a título más bajo con los grupos pyrogenes e icterohaemorrhagios. La infección, después de establecer el diagnóstico, se controló con dihidroestreptomicina y adición de cloro al agua para consumo de los animales. Se hizo el tratamiento general a todos los animales, el brote se controló en forma inmediata y no se ha presentado ningún problema después de un añoPorcicultur
Seudomicetoma dermatofítico en un gato persa : aspectos clínicos, patológicos y evolutivos
En este trabajo presentamos los aspectos clínicos, anatomopatológicos y evolutivos de un caso de dermatitis piogranulomatosa múltiple causada por hongos del género Microsporum, también conocida como seudomicetoma dermatofítico, en un gato persa, no castrado, de un año de edad al comienzo de la enfermedad. Las lesiones se caracterizaron macroscópicamente por la formación de numerosos nódulos de diferentes tamaños, localizados en la cabeza y antebrazo derecho, extendiéndose posteriormente a zona dorso lateral del tronco. La evolución de estos nódulos, que se generalizaron en algo menos de un mes, era hacia la coalescencia y fistulización, con descarga de un material grumoso blanco-grisáceo. El estudio histopatológico reveló una dermatitis piogranulomatosa, supeficial y profunda, caracterizada por presentar en el centro de los granulomas agregados de hongos septados inmersos en una matriz acidófila. La extirpación quirúrgica de un gran número de nódulos proporcionó mejorías transitorias, aunque reaparecieron nuevas lesiones. En este trabajo se describe la evolución tras dos años de seguimiento clínico. Tras el tratamiento con griseofulvina no se detectan nuevas lesiones después de 6 meses de su aplicación y seguimiento.This paper reports the clinical and histopathological features of a case of pyogranulomatous dermatitis caused by Microsporum fungi, a condition also known as dermatophyte pseudomycetoma, in a eneyear-old Persian cat. Grossly apparent fistulized nodules of varying sizes displaying a granular discharge were localized on the head, back, elbow and tail. Microscopic analysis revealed a deep piogranulomatous dermatitis characterized by centrally-located clusters of fungi within an acidophilic matrix. In just under a month, nodules had beco me generalized. Partial surgical excision and non-specific treatment provided temporary improvement, but new lesions subsequentlyappeared
