    Data-Driven Understanding of Smart Service Systems Through Text Mining

    Smart service systems are everywhere, in homes and in the transportation, energy, and healthcare sectors. However, such systems have yet to be fully understood in the literature. Given the widespread applications of and research on smart service systems, we used text mining to develop a unified understanding of such systems in a data-driven way. Specifically, we used a combination of metrics and machine learning algorithms to preprocess and analyze text data related to smart service systems, including text from the scientific literature and news articles. By analyzing 5,378 scientific articles and 1,234 news articles, we identify important keywords, 16 research topics, 4 technology factors, and 13 application areas. We define ???smart service system??? based on the analytics results. Furthermore, we discuss the theoretical and methodological implications of our work, such as the 5Cs (connection, collection, computation, and communications for co-creation) of smart service systems and the text mining approach to understand service research topics. We believe this work, which aims to establish common ground for understanding these systems across multiple disciplinary perspectives, will encourage further research and development of modern service systems

    An Integrative Design Framework for New Service Development

    Service innovation is focused on customer value creation. At its core, customer-centric service innovation in an increasingly digital world is technology-enabled, human-centered, and process-oriented. This requires a cross-disciplinary, holistic approach to new service design and development (NSD). This paper proposes a new service strategy-aligned integrative design framework for NSD. It correlates the underlying theories and principles of disparate but interrelated aspects of service design thinking: service strategy, concept, design, experience and architecture into a coherent framework for NSD, consistent with the service brand value. Application of the framework to NSD is envisioned to be iterative and holistic, accentuated on continuous organizational and customer learning. The preliminary framework's efficacy is illustrated using a simplified telecom case example. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014

    Bacterial communities of cryoconite holes of a temperate alpine glacier show both seasonal trends and year-to-year variability

    Cryoconite holes are small depressions of the glacier surface filled with melting water and with a wind-blown debris on the bottom. These environments are considered hot spots of biodiversity and biological activities on glaciers and host communities dominated by bacteria. Most of the studies on cryoconite holes assume that their communities are stable. However, evidence of seasonal variation in cryoconite hole ecological communities exists. We investigated the variation of the bacterial communities of cryoconite holes of Forni Glacier (Central Italian Alps) during the melting seasons (July-September) 2013 and 2016, for which samples at three and five time-points, respectively were available. Bacterial communities were characterized by high-throughput Illumina sequencing of the hypervariable V5'V6 regions of 16S rRNA gene, while meteorological data were obtained by an automatic weather station. We found consistent trends in bacterial communities, which shifted from cyanobacteria-dominated communities in July to communities dominated by heterotrophic orders in late August and September. Temperature seems also to affect seasonal dynamics of communities. We also compared bacterial communities at the beginning of the melting season across 4 years (2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016) and found significant year-to-year variability. Cryoconite hole communities on temperate glaciers are therefore not temporally stable

    The foundational Franz-Keldysh effect and Einstein model are applied in this work to characterize semiconductor band-edge absorption—and its departures from ideality. We unify the Franz-Keldysh and Einstein models to fully characterize the field-induced tunneling of photoexcited electrons from degenerate valence bands into the conduction band, with encroachment into the band gap arising as an Urbach tail. Our unified model is implemented for semi-insulating indium phosphide (SI-InP) with strong agreement seen between the theoretical and experimental results for varied photon energies and electric fields

    Complete Mitochondrial Genome and Phylogeny of Pleistocene MammothMammuthus primigenius

    Phylogenetic relationships between the extinct woolly mammoth(Mammuthus primigenius), and the Asian(Elephas maximus) and African savanna(Loxodonta africana) elephants remain unresolved. Here, we report the sequence of the complete mitochondrial genome (16,842 base pairs) of a woolly mammoth extracted from permafrost-preserved remains from the Pleistocene epoch—the oldest mitochondrial genome sequence determined to date. We demonstrate that well-preserved mitochondrial genome fragments, as long as ~1,600–1700 base pairs, can be retrieved from pre-Holocene remains of an extinct species. Phylogenetic reconstruction of the Elephantinae clade suggests thatM. primigenius andE. maximus are sister species that diverged soon after their common ancestor split from theL. africana lineage. Low nucleotide diversity found between independently determined mitochondrial genomic sequences of woolly mammoths separated geographically and in time suggests that north-eastern Siberia was occupied by a relatively homogeneous population ofM. primigenius throughout the late Pleistocene

    This opinion piece by several authors is based on a text that describes the conflict between the Mapuche community and a physician from the health-care system of the province of Neuquén when the Mapuche women entered the sexual and reproductive health program. Opinions are expressed in two different ways: first, with specific reference to the text and then, as a subjective elaboration. Among the issues analyzed in more depth are the regulations governing health-care system interventions and the power relations between genders and among different cultures.Este artículo de opinión ha sido realizado por varios autores en base a un texto que relata el conflicto suscitado entre la comunidad mapuche y una médica del sistema de salud de la provincia del Neuquén, al incorporarse a las mujeres de la comunidadal programa de salud sexual y reproductiva. Los participantes expresan sus opiniones en dos rondas: en la primera se refieren específicamente al texto y en la segunda comentan las exposiciones de la primera. Entre los tópicos analizados con mayor profundidad se destacan los vinculados con la normatividad en las intervenciones de los sistemas de salud y con las relaciones de poder que se producen entre ambos géneros y entre las diferentes culturas
