Quantum erasure in the presence of a thermal bath: the effects of system-environment microscopic correlations
We investigate the role of the environment in a quantum erasure setup in the
cavity quantum electrodynamics domain. Two slightly different schemes are
analyzed. We show that the effects of the environment vary when a scheme is
exchanged for another. This can be used to estimate the macroscopic parameters
related to the system-environment microscopic correlations.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure
Analysis of the velocity field of granular hopper flow
We report the analysis of radial characteristics of the flow of granular
material through a conical hopper. The discharge is simulated for various
orifice sizes and hopper opening angles. Velocity profiles are measured along
two radial lines from the hopper cone vertex: along the main axis of the cone
and along its wall. An approximate power law dependence on the distance from
the orifice is observed for both profiles, although differences between them
can be noted. In order to quantify these differences, we propose a Local Mass
Flow index that is a promising tool in the direction of a more reliable
classification of the flow regimes in hoppers
Quantum critical point in the spin glass-antiferromagnetism competition in Kondo-lattice systems
A theory is proposed to describe the competition among antiferromagnetism
(AF), spin glass (SG) and Kondo effect. The model describes two Kondo
sublattices with an intrasite Kondo interaction strength and an
interlattice quantum Ising interaction in the presence of a transverse field
. The interlattice coupling is a random Gaussian distributed variable
(with average and variance ) while the field is
introduced as a quantum mechanism to produce spin flipping. The path integral
formalism is used to study this fermionic problem where the spin operators are
represented by bilinear combinations of Grassmann fields. The disorder is
treated within the framework of the replica trick. The free energy and the
order parameters of the problem are obtained by using the static ansatz and by
choosing both and to allow, as previously,
a better comparison with the experimental findings.
The results indicate the presence of a SG solution at low and for
temperature ( is the freezing temperature). When is
increased, a mixed phase AF+SG appears, then an AF solution and finally a Kondo
state is obtained for high values of . Moreover, the behaviors of the
freezing and Neel temperatures are also affected by the relationship between
and the transverse field . The first one presents a slight
decrease while the second one decreases towards a Quantum Critical Point (QCP).
The obtained phase diagram has the same sequence as the experimental one for
, if is assumed to increase with , and
in addition, it also shows a qualitative agreement concerning the behavior of

Seismic vulnerability of churches in Faial and Pico islands, Azores
Earthquakes represent one of the main cause of serious damage and loss of historic and architectural heritage. Interventions to preserve these building should start with a careful knowledge and assessment of their seismic vulnerability, in order to support any needed retrofitting and strengthening measures.
This paper proposes a procedure to register and diagnose of the level of damage on churches after the occurrence of an earthquake, and also to assess the seismic vulnerability of this type of construction. This procedure was applied to sixteen churches in the Azores islands which were hit by the July 9th 1998 earthquake.
Belfries of church towers are elements with a particular seismic vulnerability. For this reason, and based on the Italian methodology proposed by the Linee Guida (2006), it is applied to belfries of two churches from Pico (Azores), a simplified mechanical model for assessment of seismic vulnerability of this type of structures
National social identity in Guinea-Bissau : an exploratory essay inspired by the methodology of J. Cheek, S. Briggs, S. Smith and L. Tropp
The research (supported by the Centre for African and Development Studies of the University of Lisbon) is defined as exploratory and aims to evaluate whether the methodology of inquiry and analysis of the identity of J. Cheek, S. Briggs, S. Smith and L. Tropp, can be adapted to a fragile state like Guinea-Bissau. This methodology consists in the assessment of the importance attributed by the respondents of 70 sentences from which the characteristics of individual and social identity (family and collective) are extracted (Cheek, J. M. & Briggs, S. R.). The phrases were sent by digital means to 102 Guineans known in person or only by Facebook with a request for response and dissemination and obtained 183 responses. These answers, calculated according to the methodology adopted, allowed to define some identity characteristics of the respondents. We tried to interpret these results using other surveys conducted since 2014 in Guinea-Bissau with different themes. It is concluded by realizing that this is a method that can contribute to the knowledge of the national identity of Guineans, but insufficient. Control of state and state entanglement with a single auxiliary subsystem
We present a strategy to control the evolution of a quantum system. The novel
aspect of this protocol is the use of a \emph{single auxiliary subsystem}. Two
applications are given, one which allows for state preservation and another
which controls the degree of entanglement of a given initial state
Applying semantic web technologies to knowledge sharing in aerospace engineering
This paper details an integrated methodology to optimise Knowledge reuse and sharing, illustrated with a use case in the aeronautics domain. It uses Ontologies as a central modelling strategy for the Capture of Knowledge from legacy docu-ments via automated means, or directly in systems interfacing with Knowledge workers, via user-defined, web-based forms. The domain ontologies used for Knowledge Capture also guide the retrieval of the Knowledge extracted from the data using a Semantic Search System that provides support for multiple modalities during search. This approach has been applied and evaluated successfully within the aerospace domain, and is currently being extended for use in other domains on an increasingly large scale
Dispersive amplitude and giant CP violation in B to three light-meson decays at LHCb
The LHCb collaboration has recently reported the largest CP violation effect
from a single amplitude, as well as other giant CP asymmetries in several
-meson decays into three charmless light mesons. It is also claimed that
this is predominantly due to rescattering in the
final state, particularly in the 1 to 1.5 GeV region. In these analyses the
amplitude is by default estimated from the
elastic scattering amplitude and does not describe the existing
scattering data. Here we show how the recent
model-independent dispersive analysis of data can
be easily implemented in the LHCb formalism. This leads to a more accurate
description of the asymmetry, while being consistent with the measured
scattering amplitude and confirming the prominent role of hadronic final state
interactions, paving the way for more elaborated analyses.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures. Minor corrections and discussions were added.
