    Higher Chow cycles on some K3 surfaces with involution

    We construct, for each 2<r<18, an explicit family of higher Chow cycles of type (2,1) on a family of lattice-polarized K3 surfaces of generic Picard rank r, and prove that the indecomposable part of this cycle is non-torsion for very general members of the family. These are the first explicit examples of such families in middle Picard rank. Our construction is based on singular double plane model of K3 surfaces, and the proof of indecomposability is done by a degeneration method

    It is common practice in scattering theory to correlate between the position of a resonance peak in the cross section and the real part of a complex energy of a pole of the scattering amplitude. In this work we show that the resonance peak position appears at the absolute value of the pole's complex energy rather than its real part. We further demonstrate that a local theory of resonances can still be used even in cases previously thought impossible

    Germplasm evaluation for crop improvement: Analysis of grain quality and cadmium accumulation in barley

    Evaluating genetic variation in barley (Hordeum vulgare) germplasm, combined with genome-wide genotyping, is vital for identifying genes controlling important grain-quality traits. For example, in addition to traditional grain quality properties such as starch and protein contents, grain safety parameters such as heavy metal content, are important in the use of barley for human food and animal feed. A number of genes affecting grain quality have been identified by map-based cloning strategies and functionally analyzed by genetic transformation experiments. Moreover, germplasm evaluation yielded information that enabled the introgression of a key gene controlling grain cadmium accumulation into an elite barley cultivar, reducing the content of this heavy metal in grain. Genotyping of molecular markers and resequencing of germplasm accessions may provide information about how grain quality–related loci evolved and how the current allelic diversity was established. In this review, we describe germplasm resources for barley grain quality–related traits and the methods used to analyze the functions of genes controlling these traits, illustrating cadmium accumulation as an example.     A Novel Document Generation Process for Topic Detection based on Hierarchical Latent Tree Models

    We propose a novel document generation process based on hierarchical latent tree models (HLTMs) learned from data. An HLTM has a layer of observed word variables at the bottom and multiple layers of latent variables on top. For each document, we first sample values for the latent variables layer by layer via logic sampling, then draw relative frequencies for the words conditioned on the values of the latent variables, and finally generate words for the document using the relative word frequencies. The motivation for the work is to take word counts into consideration with HLTMs. In comparison with LDA-based hierarchical document generation processes, the new process achieves drastically better model fit with much fewer parameters. It also yields more meaningful topics and topic hierarchies. It is the new state-of-the-art for the hierarchical topic detection

    Enhancement of polarization in a spin-orbit coupling quantum wire with a constriction

    We investigate the enhancement of spin polarization in a quantum wire in the presence of a constriction and a spin-orbit coupling segment. It is shown that the spin-filtering effect is significantly heightened in comparison with the configuration without the constriction. It is understood in the studies that the constriction structure plays a critical role in enhancing the spin filtering by means of confining the incident electrons to occupy one channel only while the outgoing electrons occupy two channels. The enhancement of spin-filtering has also been analyzed within the perturbation theory. Because the spin polarization arises mainly from the scattering between the constriction and the segment with spin-orbit coupling, the sub-band mixing induced by spin-orbit interaction in the scattering process and the interferences result in higher spin-filtering effect.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

    Scaling of Anisotropic Flow and Momentum-Space Densities for Light Particles in Intermediate Energy Heavy Ion Collisions

    Anisotropic flows (v2v_2 and v4v_4) of light nuclear clusters are studied by Isospin-Dependent Quantum Molecular Dynamics model for the system of 86^{86}Kr + 124^{124}Sn at intermediate energy and large impact parameters. Number-of-nucleon scaling of the elliptic flow (v2v_2) are demonstrated for the light fragments up to AA = 4, and the ratio of v4/v22v_4/v_2^2 shows a constant value of 1/2. In addition, the momentum-space densities of different clusters are also surveyed as functions of transverse momentum, in-plane transverse momentum and azimuth angle relative to the reaction plane. The results can be essentially described by momentum-space power law. All the above phenomena indicate that there exists a number-of-nucleon scaling for both anisotropic flow and momentum-space densities for light clusters, which can be understood by the coalescence mechanism in nucleonic degree of freedom for the cluster formation.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures; to be published in Physics Letters

    Trigonometric Parallax of W51 Main/South

    We report measurement of the trigonometric parallax of W51 Main/South using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). We measure a value of 0.185 +/- 0.010 mas, corresponding to a distance of 5.41 (+0.31/-0.28) kpc. W51 Main/South is a well-known massive star-forming region near the tangent point of the Sagittarius spiral arm of the Milky Way. Our distance to W51 yields an estimate of the distance to the Galactic center of Ro = 8.3 +/- 0.46 (statistical) +/- 1.0 (systematic) kpc by simple geometry. Combining the parallax and proper motion measurements for W51, we obtained the full-space motion of this massive star forming region. We find W51 is in a nearly circular orbit about the Galactic center. The H2O masers used for our parallax measurements trace four powerful bipolar outflows within a 0.4 pc size region, some of which are associated with dusty molecular hot cores and/or hyper- or ultra-compact HII regions.Comment: Accepted to ApJ; 32 pages; 6 tables; 5 figure

    Anisotropic flows (v1v_1, v2v_2 and v4v_4) of light nuclear clusters are studied by a nucleonic transport model in intermediate energy heavy ion collisions. The number-of-nucleon scalings of the directed flow (v1v_1) and elliptic flow (v2v_2) are demonstrated for light nuclear clusters. Moreover, the ratios of v4/v22v_4/v_2^2 of nuclear clusters show a constant value of 1/2 regardless of the transverse momentum.     Exploring the Public Perception in Social Big Data: An Investigation in Mars Recall Scandal

    Social media has become a popular platform of interpersonal communication in which users can search for news and convey real-time information. Researching into social big data, such as Twitter, can be an effective way to identify public opinions and feelings in risk emergence, as it provides rich sources of data for opinion mining and sentiment analysis. This study aims to investigate and analyse the public perception towards the Mars and Snickers product recall scandal. The study proposes a comprehensive data analysis framework, and utilises the dataset formed of 10,930 Twitter messages over the span of 10-day following the product recall announcement made by Mars Inc., to gauge public attitudes and opinions. The study finds that the overall attitude of Twitter users towards the scandal was negative, and Snickers were the most mentioned product in the 10-day periods after the announcement of the recall. The data analysis highlights that the Tweet diffusion (retweeting) has positive associations with the number of followers and the use of hashtags, hence companies should pay more attention to users who have a large number of followers, as their tweets will be read by a great number of other Twitter users. The findings suggest effective methods for practitioners in crisis management (e.g., how to use social media to disseminate information). The study also presents a progressive tweet-mining framework that can serve as a tool in crisis management to classify the tweet topics, identify and analyse the sentiment and comprehend the changes of the public attitudes
