La naturaleza del recubrimiento de los núcleos inorgánicos de las partículasUSPIO determina su estabilidad in vitro y su comportamiento in vivo, siendo especialmente importantes sus propiedadesfi sicoquímicas, en concreto el tamaño, la carga superfi cial y la densidad del recubrimiento. Las pequeñasdimensiones de las partículas USPIO hace difícil una caracterización fi sicoquímica completa, la cuál es de sumaimportancia para poder mejorar su estabilidad y comportamiento in vivo.     APLICACIÓN DE TRATAMIENTOS TÉRMICOS A FRUTOS DE AGUACATE PARA PROLONGAR SU VIDA DE ANAQUEL

    Esta revisión resume los avances que han tenido los tratamientos térmicos (TT) utilizados para prolongar la vida útil del aguacate. Las tecnologías que se han venido utilizando a través del tiempo se pueden dividir en aire caliente (AC), vapor caliente (VC), agua caliente (AGC), exposición a luz solar (LS) y radiofrecuencia (RF). Los estudios muestran inconsistencia en sus resultados, debido a que la respuesta fisiológica del fruto de aguacate depende de la variedad, estación del año, lugar de recolección, prácticas de producción y falta de uniformidad en el calentamiento, la exposición o no al sol. Los TT que presentan mejores resultados en mantener la firmeza, retrasar la producción de etileno, disminución de la fuga de electrólitos y menor DF, han sido la LS, AGC y la combinación entre ellos. La exposición a LS induce estrés térmico diurno que aumenta la expresión de las proteínas del choque térmico (HSP17 y HSP70) que pre-condiciona al aguacate a resistir la aplicación de AGC a 50 ºC y el posterior almacenamiento a 0,5 ºC por 28 días

    Se compara la utilidad percibida de dos métodos de entrenamiento en habilidades terapéuticas (HHTT) en psicólogos (n=149): el Peer-Counselling (PC) y el Role-playing (RP). También, se evalúa el grado de incomodidad experimentada, y la relación entre personalidad y la utilidad percibida. El PC fue considerado más útil que el RP, y las personas con mayor 'responsabilidad' y 'estabilidad emocional' lo consideraron más útil.     CHRONOFALLS: A multicentre nurse-led intervention in the chronoprevention of in-hospital falls in adults

    Background: Falls are among the most common and serious adverse events for hospitalised patients. In-hospital falls pose a major medical and economic challenge for public health worldwide. Nevertheless, the issue is often addressed without regard to certain relevant variables such as the time of the fall. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the implementation of a nurse-led intervention based on the temporal patterns of falls and their aetiology on the occurrence of falls. Methods: A mixed-method research design was carried out in three phases: a) a longitudinal prospective study (audits, chronobiological analyses and implementation of a multicentre nurse-led intervention based on temporal patterns of falls); b) a retrospective study of fall records; and c) a qualitative study based on focus groups. The protocol was published in 2021. Results: A difference was observed in the number of fall records before and after the chronopreventive intervention (retrospective: 64.4% vs. 35.6%; p < 0,001). According to the interrupted series analysis, considering the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic, a reduction in falls of 2.96% (95% CI 1.70%-4.17%) was observed. The concepts of falls, the COVID-19 pandemic and the causes of non-registration have emerged as categories for qualitative analysis. Conclusions: A multicentric nurse-led program based on tailored organisational, educational and behavioural chronopreventive measures seems to lead to a reduction in the number of in-hospital falls. The findings of the present study, highlighting the implementation of chronopreventive measures, can serve as a basis for future health policies

    A double-deletion method to quantifying incremental binding energies in proteins from experiment. Example of a destabilizing hydrogen bonding pair

    The contribution of a specific hydrogen bond in apoflavodoxin to protein stability is investigated by combining theory, experiment and simulation. Although hydrogen bonds are major determinants of protein structure and function, their contribution to protein stability is still unclear and widely debated. The best method so far devised to estimate the contribution of side-chain interactions to protein stability is double-mutant-cycle analysis, but the interaction energies so derived are not identical to incremental binding energies (the energies quantifying net contributions of two interacting groups to protein stability). Here we introduce double-deletion analysis of isolated residue pairs as a means to precisely quantify incremental binding. The method is exemplified by studying a surface-exposed hydrogen bond in a model protein (Asp96/Asn128 in apoflavodoxin). Combined substitution of these residues by alanines slightly destabilizes the protein, due to a decrease in hydrophobic surface burial. Subtraction of this effect, however, clearly indicates that the hydrogen-bonded groups in fact destabilize the native conformation. In addition, Molecular Dynamics simulations and classic double-mutant-cycle analysis explain quantitatively that, due to frustration, the hydrogen bond must form in the native structure because, when the two groups get approximated upon folding their binding becomes favorable. We would like to remark two facts: that this is the first time the contribution of a specific hydrogen bond to protein stability has been measured from experiment, and that more hydrogen bonds need to be analyzed in order to draw general conclusions on protein hydrogen bonds energetics.     The study of the reactivity of three 1-(2-dimethylaminoethyl)-1H-pyrazole derivatives of general formula [1-(CH2)2NMe2}-3,5-R2-pzol] {where pzol represents pyrazole and Rdouble bond; length as m-dashH (1a), Me (1b) or Ph (1c)} with [MCl2(DMSO)2] (Mdouble bond; length as m-dashPt or Pd) under different experimental conditions allowed us to isolate and characterize cis-[M{κ2-N,N′-{[1-(CH2)2NMe2}-3,5-R2-pzol])}Cl2] {MMdouble bond; length as m-dashPtPt (2a-2c) or Pd (3a-3c)} and two cyclometallated complexes [M{κ3-C,N,N′-{[1-(CH2)2NMe2}-3-(C5H4)-5-Ph-pzol])}Cl] {Mdouble bond; length as m-dashPt(II) (4c) or Pd(II) (5c)}. Compounds 4c and 5c arise from the orthometallation of the 3-phenyl ring of ligand 1c. Complex 2a has been further characterized by X-ray crystallography. Ligands and complexes were evaluated for their in vitro antimalarial against Plasmodium falciparum and cytotoxic activities against lung (A549) and breast (MDA MB231 and MCF7) cancer cellular lines. Complexes 2a-2c and 5c exhibited only moderate antimalarial activities against two P. falciparum strains (3D7 and W2). Interestingly, cytotoxicity assays revealed that the platinacycle 4c exhibits a higher toxicity than cisplatin in the three human cell lines and that the complex 2a presents a remarkable cytotoxicity and selectivity in lung (IC50 = 3 μM) versus breast cancer cell lines (IC50 > 20 μM). Thus, complexes 2c and 4c appear to be promising leads, creating a novel family of anticancer agents. Electrophoretic DNA migration studies in presence of the synthesized compounds have been performed, in order to get further insights into their mechanism of action

The objective of the study is to assess the cost-effectiveness and cost-utility analysis of a multidisciplinary biopsychosocial educational group intervention (MBEGI) of non-specific sub-acute LBP in comparison with the usual care in the working population recruited in primary healthcare centres. Methods/design: The study design is a cost-effectiveness and cost-utility analysis of a MBEGI in comparison with the usual care of non-specific sub-acute LBP.Measures on effectiveness and costs of both interventions will be obtained from a cluster randomised controlled clinical trial carried out in 38 Catalan primary health care centres, enrolling 932 patients between 18 and 65 years old with a diagnosis of non-specific sub-acute LBP. Effectiveness measures are: pharmaceutical treatments, work sick leave (% and duration in days), Roland Morris disability, McGill pain intensity, Fear Avoidance Beliefs (FAB) and Golberg Questionnaires. Utility measures will be calculated from the SF-12. The analysis will be performed from a social perspective. The temporal horizon is at 3 months (change to chronic LBP) and 12 months (evaluate the outcomes at long term. Assessment of outcomes will be blinded and will follow the intention-to-treat principle. Discussion: We hope to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness and cost-utility of MBEGI, see an improvement in the patients' quality of life, achieve a reduction in the duration of episodes and the chronicity of non-specific low back pain, and be able to report a decrease in the social costs. If the intervention is cost-effectiveness and cost-utility, it could be applied to Primary Health Care Centres. Trial registration: ISRCTN: ISRCTN5871969

    Determination of diquat by flow injection-chemiluminescence

    A simple, economic, sensitive and rapid method for the determination of the pesticide diquat was described. This new method was based on the coupling of flow injection analysis methodology and direct chemiluminescent detection; to the authors' knowledge, this approach had not been used up to now with this pesticide. It was based on its oxidation with ferricyanide in alkaline medium; significant improvements in the analytical signal were achieved by using high temperatures and quinine as sensitiser. Its high throughput (144 h(-1)), together with its low limit of detection (2 ng mL(-1)), achieved without need of preconcentration steps, permitted the reliable quantification of diquat over the linear range of (0.01-0.6) mu g mL(-1) in samples from different origins (river, tap, mineral and ground waters), even in the presence of a 40-fold concentration of paraquat, a pesticide commonly present in the commercial formulations of diquat.López-Paz, JL.; Catalá-Icardo, M.; Antón Garrido, B.     Aprendizaje experiencial de habilidades terapéuticas y análisis de su utilidad en función de la personalidad

    Se comparó la utilidad percibida de dos métodos de entrenamiento de habilidades terapéuticas en la formación del Psicólogo General Sanitario: el asesoramiento entre iguales (el alumno que hace de cliente expone una experiencia personal o sea se trabaja con experiencias reales) y la representación de papeles (el alumno que hace de cliente representa un papel). Además, se evaluó el grado de incomodidad que puede suponer al alumno compartir experiencias personales íntimas, así como la relación entre la personalidad de los alumnos y la utilidad percibida de ambos métodos docentes. Los participantes, 149 alumnos del Máster en Psicología General Sanitaria de la Universidad de Barcelona, cumplimentaron el NEO-FFI y un cuestionario ad hoc sobre la metodología docente. El asesoramiento entre iguales fue considerado más útil que la representación de papeles tanto para el trabajo del autoconocimiento como para la formación como psicólogo clínico y la utilidad de ambos fue predicha principalmente por la dimensión 'Responsabilidad'. La incomodidad experimentada fue significativamente menor que la anticipada. Tales resultados tienen importantes implicaciones docentes para la formación de habilidades terapéuticas

    A high dietary glycemic index increases total mortality in a Mediterranean population at high cardiovascular risk

    OBJECTIVE: Different types of carbohydrates have diverse glycemic response, thus glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) are used to assess this variation. The impact of dietary GI and GL in all-cause mortality is unknown. The objective of this study was to estimate the association between dietary GI and GL and risk of all-cause mortality in the PREDIMED study. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The PREDIMED study is a randomized nutritional intervention trial for primary cardiovascular prevention based on community-dwelling men and women at high risk of cardiovascular disease. Dietary information was collected at baseline and yearly using a validated 137-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). We assigned GI values of each item by a 5-step methodology, using the International Tables of GI and GL Values. Deaths were ascertained through contact with families and general practitioners, review of medical records and consultation of the National Death Index. Cox regression models were used to estimate multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HR) and their 95% CI for mortality, according to quartiles of energy-adjusted dietary GI/GL. To assess repeated measures of exposure, we updated GI and GL intakes from the yearly FFQs and used Cox models with time-dependent exposures. RESULTS: We followed 3,583 non-diabetic subjects (4.7 years of follow-up, 123 deaths). As compared to participants in the lowest quartile of baseline dietary GI, those in the highest quartile showed an increased risk of all-cause mortality [HR = 2.15 (95% CI: 1.15-4.04); P for trend  = 0.012]. In the repeated-measures analyses using as exposure the yearly updated information on GI, we observed a similar association. Dietary GL was associated with all-cause mortality only when subjects were younger than 75 years. CONCLUSIONS: High dietary GI was positively associated with all-cause mortality in elderly population at high cardiovascular risk
