    Remote sensing for monitoring the impacts of agroforestry practices and precipitation changes in particle size export trends

    Recent land use changes, the absence of soil protection between crop periods, and extreme precipitation events have been highlighted as major influential factors in the fluctuations of sediment export in the last decades at the catchment scale worldwide. In this regard, soil erosion and fine-particle export are two of the major concerns of soil nutrient loss and water-quality decrease (e.g., increasing turbidity and vector of chemicals). However, while rainfall effects have been well-monitored, recent land use changes and management need additional approaches to evaluate their effect. In Mediterranean mountainous environments, in addition to forest management, agricultural practices during different cropland stages likely increase sediment and particle-bound chemicals in the drainage system. Moreover, most catchments lack instrumentalization. Thus, there is a gap in the knowledge on the processes influencing the sediment exported in ungauged catchments. To evaluate the processes involved, remote sensing and seasonal sampling of suspended sediments were examined for 5 years in a representative agroforestry system in three sub-catchments (SBCs) with different proportions of land uses. Temporal trends of NDVI, EVI, MSAVI, SAVI, and NDWI indices were analyzed for monitoring the vegetation status. With this information, we attempt to evaluate the soil response in terms of particle size export to land use change, vegetation status, and precipitation distribution in fine-grained sediment-reaching streams. Our findings not only highlight the significant effect of heavy precipitation events and vegetation cover on the grain-size fraction of the exported sediment but also reveal the existence of more complex factors influencing the export dynamics. A silt-increasing trend due to the increase of individual heavy precipitations from 2017 onward despite the total precipitation amount not increasing was detected. It is shown that indices such as NDVI and NDMI help detect small changes in vegetation cover, while EVI, SAVI, and MSAVI are more robust for detecting general patterns in large vegetated areas and preventing the appearance of artefacts in the data. Results from this study suggest that land use changes combined with short-scale changing trends of rainfall likely explain most of the possible effects observed in terms of sediment export changes.This research is part of the Project I+D+i PID 2019-104857RB-I00, funded by the MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/.     Characterizations of hemirings by their hh-ideals

    In this paper we characterize hemirings in which all hh-ideals or all fuzzy hh-ideals are idempotent. It is proved, among other results, that every hh-ideal of a hemiring RR is idempotent if and only if the lattice of fuzzy hh-ideals of RR is distributive under the sum and hh-intrinsic product of fuzzy hh-ideals or, equivalently, if and only if each fuzzy hh-ideal of RR is intersection of those prime fuzzy hh-ideals of RR which contain it. We also define two types of prime fuzzy hh-ideals of RR and prove that, a non-constant hh-ideal of RR is prime in the second sense if and only if each of its proper level set is a prime hh-ideal of RR

    Tyramine and histamine risk assessment related to consumption of dry fermented sausages by the Spanish population

    Tyramine and histamine are the main dietary bioactive amines related to acute adverse health effects. Dry fermented sausages can easily accumulate high levels of these hazards and are frequently consumed in Spain. The present work aims to assess the exposure to tyramine and histamine from the consumption of dry fermented sausages by the Spanish population and to assess the risk to suffer acute health effects from this exposure. A probabilistic estimation of the exposure to these hazards was derived combining probability distributions of these amines in dry fermented sausages (n = 474) and their consumption by the Spanish population. The mean dietary exposure to tyramine and histamine was 6.2 and 1.39 mg/meal, respectively. The risk of suffering hypertensive crisis or histamine intoxication by healthy population due to tyramine or histamine intake, respectively, exclusively from dry fermented sausages, can be considered negligible. For individuals under treatment with MAOI drugs, the probability to surpass the safe threshold dose (6 mg/meal) was estimated as 34%. For patients with histamine intolerance, even the presence of this amine in food is not tolerable and it could be estimated that 7000 individuals per million could be at risk to suffer the related symptoms after consuming dry fermented sausage

    Influence of mild feed restriction and mild reduction in dietary amino acid content on feeding behaviour of group-housed growing pigs

    This study investigates changes in the feeding behaviour of pigs as a result of a restriction in their feed allowance and a reduction in dietary indispensable amino acid (AA) content. Ninety-six Topig Talent Ă— PIC barrows were housed in 8 pens and individually fed either ad libitum (AL) or a restricted diet (RF) from 47 to 145 kg body weight (BW). The amount of feed given to RF pigs was close to their expected voluntary intake, but it was limited to proportions of 0.33, 0.66 and 1.00 of the estimated daily amount of feed in 3 time intervals, 00:01 to 8:00, 8:01 to 16:00 and 16:01 to 24:00 h, respectively. From 86 kg BW, the pigs in 4 of the pens were fed diets with conventional standardized ileal digestible AA content (CAA), while the pigs in the other pens received diets (LAA) in which the proportions of dietary indispensable AA were lowered with respect to CAA by 0.91 from 86 to 118 kg BW and by 0.82 from 118 to 145 kg BW. Automated feeders monitored individual feeding behaviour. Data were analysed by pig and feeding phase with a 2 Ă— 2 factorial design. Over the whole experimental period, feed restriction resulted in a decrease in daily feed intake (7%, P < 0.001), the number of visits (27%, P < 0.001) and the time spent feeding (14%, P < 0.001), but an increase in feed consumption per visit (20%, P = 0.001) and feeding rate (10%, P = 0.032). The reduction in AA increased daily feed intake (7%, P = 0.031), tended to increase feeding rate (14%, P = 0.07) and interacted with feeding regime with respect to the number and duration of feeding visits. During growing and finishing, we observed high, negative, non-linear relationships between feed consumption per visit and visit frequency (R2 = 0.989 to 0.876), between visit duration and visit frequency (R2 = 0.648 to 0.695), and between feeding rate and time spent feeding in a day (R2 = 0.802 to 0.707), and positive linear relationships between visit duration and feed consumption per visit (R2 = 0.614 to 0.570). The individual feeding rate during growing was positively correlated with that during finishing (R2 = 0.458). We conclude that pigs try to adapt their feeding pattern to compensate for a reduction in feed allowance or nutrient restriction by, for example, increasing their feeding rate, which may reflect increased feeding motivation

    New approach for the diagnosis of histamine intolerance based on the determination of histamine and methylhistamine in urine.

    Histamine intolerance is a disorder in the homeostasis of histamine due to a reduced intestinal degradation of this amine, mainly caused by diamine oxidase (DAO) enzyme deficiency, which provokes its accumulation in plasma and the appearance of adverse health affects. A new approach for the diagnosis of this intolerance could be the determination of histamine and its metabolites in urine. The aim of this work was to develop and validate a rapid method to determine histamine and methylhistamine in human urine by Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography and Fluorimetric detection (UHPLC-FL). The proposed method is a consistent procedure to determine histamine and methylhistamine in less than 11 minutes with adequate linearity and sensitivity. Relative standard deviation was always lower than 5.5%, ensuring method precision; and mean recovery was greater than 99% for both analytes. The structure of histamine and methylhistamine conjugated with OPA were confirmed by UHPLC-ITD-FTMS which enabled to unequivocally identify both analytes in standards and also in urine samples. The analysis of histamine and methylhistamine in urine samples could be a potential new approach for the routine diagnosis of histamine intolerance, more patient-friendly and with clear advantages in terms of equipment and personnel demand for sample collection in comparison with current plasmatic DAO activity determination

    Lyophilised legume sprouts as a functional ingredient for diamine oxidase enzyme supplementation in histamine intolerance

    Diamine oxidase (DAO) is one of the key enzymes involved in the degradation of dietary histamine. An imbalance of histamine scavenging systems leads to histamine intolerance, a diet-related disorder that may be tackled by following a low-histamine diet. Recently, the supplementation with exogenous DAO enzyme of animal origin has received the green light as a novel food to enhance intestinal degradation of histamine. This work performed a screening for histamine-degrading capacity of Leguminosae species in order to explore its potential suitability as plant-derived active ingredient of enzymatic supplements. In vitro DAO activity was determined both in raw pulses and lyophilised sprouts by an enzymatic assay coupled to UHPLC-FLD and several germination and storage conditions were assessed. The sprouts of edible legumes showed an in vitro histamine-degrading capacity ranging from 36.0 to 408.3 mU g-1, much higher than that found for the non-germinated seeds (0.14 - 1.95 mU g-1). The germination of legume seeds for 6 days in darkness provided the maximum DAO activity. Only the freezing storage of the lyophilized sprouts kept the enzymatic activity intact for at least 12 months. These results demonstrate that certain edible legumes could be suitable for the formulation of DAO supplements for the treatment of histamine intolerance

    Histamine Intolerance: The Current State of the Art

    Histamine intolerance, also referred to as enteral histaminosis or sensitivity to dietary histamine, is a disorder associated with an impaired ability to metabolize ingested histamine that was described at the beginning of the 21st century. Although interest in histamine intolerance has considerably grown in recent years, more scientific evidence is still required to help define, diagnose and clinically manage this condition. This article will provide an updated review on histamine intolerance, mainly focusing on its etiology and the existing diagnostic and treatment strategies. In this work, a glance on histamine intoxication will also be provided, as well as the analysis of some uncertainties historically associated to histamine intoxication outbreaks that may be better explained by the existence of interindividual susceptibility to ingested histamine.     In vitro determination of diamine oxidase activity in food matrices by an enzymatic assay coupled to UHPLC-FL.

    Intestinal diamine oxidase (DAO) acts as a protective barrier against exogenous histamine. A deficit of DAO activity can lead to the appearance of histamine intolerance, a clinical condition that may be treated by a low-histamine diet and oral DAO supplementation to enhance intestinal histamine degradation. As sources of DAO, porcine kidneys and certain legume seedlings are suitable components for the formulation of a DAO supplement. The aim of this work was to develop a rapid and reliable methodology for the in vitro determination of DAO activity in food matrices based on an enzymatic assay coupled to UHPLC-FL. The proposed method showed a satisfactory linearity and sensitivity and provided a relative standard deviation lower than 3%, guaranteeing method precision, and a mean recovery greater than 99% both for lyophilized pea sprouts and porcine kidney protein extracts. A high specificity is a key attribute of this method due to the use of histamine as the reaction substrate and the direct quantification of its degradation. Moreover, the lack of interference of catalase and hydrogen peroxide is another advantage in comparison with previously published methods. Lyophilized pea sprouts showed the greatest histamine-degrading activity (0.40 ± 0.01 mU/mg), followed by porcine kidney protein extracts (0.23 ± 0.01 mU/mg) and commercial DAO supplements (0.09 ± 0.06 mU/mg). This technique could be used as a tool to validate the DAO activity of food matrices of potential interest for the treatment of histamine intolerance

    Differences in Polyamine Content between Human Milk and Infant Formulas

    Human milk is the gold standard for nutrition during the first months of life, but when breastfeeding is not possible, it may be replaced by infant formulas, either partially or totally. Polyamines, which play an important role in intestinal maturation and the development of the immune system, are found both in human milk and infant formulas, the first exogenous source of these compounds for the newborn. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence and evolution of polyamines in human milk during the first semester of lactation and to compare the polyamine content with that of infant formulas. In total, 30 samples of human milk provided by six mothers during the first five months of lactation as well as 15 different types of infant formulas were analyzed using UHPLC-FL. Polyamines were detected in all human milk samples but with great variation among mothers. Spermidine and spermine levels tended to decrease during the lactation period, while putrescine remained practically unchanged. Considerable differences were observed in the polyamine contents and profiles between human milk and infant formulas, with concentrations being up to 30 times lower in the latter. The predominant polyamines in human milk were spermidine and spermine, and putrescine in infant formulas.
