Phase Transitions for Belousov-Zhabotinsky Reactions
The main objective of this article is to study the dynamic phase transitions
associated with the spatial-temporal oscillations of the BZ reactions, given by
Field, Koros and Noyes, also referred as the Oregonator. Two criteria are
derived to determine 1) existence of either multiple equilibria or
spatiotemporal oscillations, and 2) the types of transitions. These criteria
gives a complete characterization of the dynamic transitions of the BZ systems
from the homogeneous states. The analysis is carried out using a dynamic
transition theory developed recently by the authors, which has been
successfully applied to a number of problems in science
Fragmentation functions of mesons in the Field-Feynman model
The fragmentation functions of the pion with distinction between
, , and are studied in the
Field-Feynman recursive model, by taking into account the flavor structure in
the excitation of quark-antiquark pairs by the initial quarks. The obtained
analytical results are compatible with available empirical results. The
framework is also extended to predict the fragmentation functions of the kaon
with distinction between , ,
, and . This work gives a significant
modification of the original model, and the predictions can be tested by future

Unrelated Helpers in a Primitively Eusocial Wasp: Is Helping Tailored Towards Direct Fitness?
The paper wasp Polistes dominulus is unique among the social insects in that nearly one-third of co-foundresses are completely unrelated to the dominant individual whose offspring they help to rear and yet reproductive skew is high. These unrelated subordinates stand to gain direct fitness through nest inheritance, raising the question of whether their behaviour is adaptively tailored towards maximizing inheritance prospects. Unusually, in this species, a wealth of theory and empirical data allows us to predict how unrelated subordinates should behave. Based on these predictions, here we compare helping in subordinates that are unrelated or related to the dominant wasp across an extensive range of field-based behavioural contexts. We find no differences in foraging effort, defense behaviour, aggression or inheritance rank between unrelated helpers and their related counterparts. Our study provides no evidence, across a number of behavioural scenarios, that the behaviour of unrelated subordinates is adaptively modified to promote direct fitness interests
Fitting Precision Electroweak Data with Exotic Heavy Quarks
The 1999 precision electroweak data from LEP and SLC persist in showing some
slight discrepancies from the assumed standard model, mostly regarding and
quarks. We show how their mixing with exotic heavy quarks could result in a
more consistent fit of all the data, including two unconventional

Axial vector form factor of nucleons in a light-cone diquark model
The nucleon axial vector form factor is investigated in a light-cone quark
spectator diquark model, in which Melosh rotations are applied to both the
quark and vector diquark. It is found that this model gives a very good
description of available experimental data and the results have very little
dependence on the parameters of the model. The relation between the nucleon

Analysis of the atmospheric distribution, sources, and sinks of oxygenated volatile organic chemicals based on measurements over the Pacific during TRACE-P
Airborne measurements of a large number of oxygenated volatile organic chemicals (OVOC) were carried out in the Pacific troposphere (0.1 - 12 km) in winter/spring of 2001 (24 February to 10 April). Specifically, these measurements included acetone (CH3COCHA3), methylethyl ketone (CH3COC2H5, MEK), methanol (CH3OH), ethanol (C2H5OH), acetaldehyde (CH3CHO), propionaldehyde C2H 5CHO), peroxyacylnitrates (PANs) (CnH 2n+1COO2NO2), and organic nitrates (CnH2n+1ONO2). Complementary measurements of formaldehyde (HCHO), methyl hydroperoxide (CH 3OOH), and selected tracers were also available. OVOC were abundant in the clean troposphere and were greatly enhanced in the outflow regions from Asia. Background mixing ratios were typically highest in the lower troposphere and declined toward the upper troposphere and the lowermost stratosphere. Their total abundance (ΣOVOC) was nearly twice that of nonmethane hydrocarbons (Σ C2-C8 NMHC. Throughout the troposphere, the OH reactivity of OVOC is comparable to that of methane and far exceeds that of NMHC. A comparison of these data with western Pacific observations collected some 7 years earlier (February-March 1994) did not reveal significant differences. Mixing ratios of OVOC were strongly correlated with each other as well as with tracers of fossil and biomass/biofuel combustion. Analysis of the relative enhancement of selected OVOC with respect to CH 3Cl and CO in 12 plumes originating from fires and sampled in the free troposphere (3-11 km) is used to assess their primary and secondary emissions from biomass combustion. The composition of these plumes also indicates a large shift of reactive nitrogen into the PAN reservoir thereby limiting ozone formation. A three-dimensional global model that uses state of the art chemistry and source information is used to compare measured and simulated mixing ratios of selected OVOC. While there is reasonable agreement in many cases, measured aldehyde concentrations are significantly larger than predicted. At their observed levels, acetaldehyde mixing ratios are shown to be an important source of HCHO (and HOx) and PAN in the troposphere. On the basis of presently known chemistry, measured mixing ratios of aldehydes and PANs are mutually incompatible. We provide rough estimates of the global sources of several OVOC and conclude that collectively these are extremely large (150-500 Tg C yr-1) but remain poorly quantified. Hadronic Production of the Doubly Charmed Baryon with Intrinsic Charm
The effects of the intrinsic charm on the hadronic production of
are studied. By taking reasonable intrinsic charm component into account, the
change of the theoretical prediction on the production of for LHC
and Tevatron is small, but in contrast it may enhance significantly for SELEX.
The reason is that the collision energy at LHC and Tevatron is so large that
the gluon-gluon fusion sub-process, which is irrelevant to intrinsic charm,
becomes dominant. But the situation for SELEX is quite different. Our numerical
results for SELEX show that by considering all the contributions from various
sub-processes, the predicted cross-section may be enhanced by a factor so big
as due to a modulating intrinsic charm being taken into account.
Therefore, the hadronic production of at SELEX may be sensitive

Thermalization of quark matter and antiquark matter is studied with
quark-quark-antiquark as well as quark-antiquark-antiquark elastic scatterings.
Squared amplitudes of qqqbar to qqqbar and qqbarqbar to qqbarqbar at order
alpha_s^4 are derived in perturbative QCD. Solved by a new technique, solutions
of transport equations with the squared amplitudes indicate that the
scatterings qqqbar to qqqbar and qqbarqbar to qqbarqbar shorten the
thermalization time of quark matter and antiquark matter. It is emphasized that
three-parton and other multi-parton scatterings become important at the high
parton number density achieved in RHIC Au-Au collisions.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, Late
Recalculation of Pion Compton Scattering in Perturbative QCD
We recalculated pion virtual Compton scattering in perturbative QCD in this
paper. Our calculation avoids some deficiencies in existing literatures, and
treats real Compton scattering as a limit case in which the mass of the virtual
photon equals to zero. Expressions of the hard scattering amplitudes from 10
independent diagrams are given explicitly in the text. By comparing the effects
of different distribution amplitudes on physical observables, we studied the

Interleukin-7 deficiency in rheumatoid arthritis: consequences for therapy-induced lymphopenia
We previously demonstrated prolonged, profound CD4+ T-lymphopenia in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients following lymphocyte-depleting therapy. Poor reconstitution could result either from reduced de novo T-cell production through the thymus or from poor peripheral expansion of residual T-cells. Interleukin-7 (IL-7) is known to stimulate the thymus to produce new T-cells and to allow circulating mature T-cells to expand, thereby playing a critical role in T-cell homeostasis. In the present study we demonstrated reduced levels of circulating IL-7 in a cross-section of RA patients. IL-7 production by bone marrow stromal cell cultures was also compromised in RA. To investigate whether such an IL-7 deficiency could account for the prolonged lymphopenia observed in RA following therapeutic lymphodepletion, we compared RA patients and patients with solid cancers treated with high-dose chemotherapy and autologous progenitor cell rescue. Chemotherapy rendered all patients similarly lymphopenic, but this was sustained in RA patients at 12 months, as compared with the reconstitution that occurred in cancer patients by 3–4 months. Both cohorts produced naïve T-cells containing T-cell receptor excision circles. The main distinguishing feature between the groups was a failure to expand peripheral T-cells in RA, particularly memory cells during the first 3 months after treatment. Most importantly, there was no increase in serum IL-7 levels in RA, as compared with a fourfold rise in non-RA control individuals at the time of lymphopenia. Our data therefore suggest that RA patients are relatively IL-7 deficient and that this deficiency is likely to be an important contributing factor to poor early T-cell reconstitution in RA following therapeutic lymphodepletion. Furthermore, in RA patients with stable, well controlled disease, IL-7 levels were positively correlated with the T-cell receptor excision circle content of CD4+ T-cells, demonstrating a direct effect of IL-7 on thymic activity in this cohort
