    Phase Transitions for Belousov-Zhabotinsky Reactions

The main objective of this article is to study the dynamic phase transitions associated with the spatial-temporal oscillations of the BZ reactions, given by Field, Koros and Noyes, also referred as the Oregonator. Two criteria are derived to determine 1) existence of either multiple equilibria or spatiotemporal oscillations, and 2) the types of transitions. These criteria gives a complete characterization of the dynamic transitions of the BZ systems from the homogeneous states. The analysis is carried out using a dynamic transition theory developed recently by the authors, which has been successfully applied to a number of problems in science

Fragmentation functions of mesons in the Field-Feynman model

The fragmentation functions of the pion with distinction between Duπ+D_{u}^{\pi^{+}}, Ddπ+D_{d}^{\pi^{+}}, and Dsπ+D_{s}^{\pi^{+}} are studied in the Field-Feynman recursive model, by taking into account the flavor structure in the excitation of quark-antiquark pairs by the initial quarks. The obtained analytical results are compatible with available empirical results. The framework is also extended to predict the fragmentation functions of the kaon with distinction between DsˉK+(z)D_{\bar{s}}^{K^{+}}(z), DuK+(z)D_{u}^{K^{+}}(z), DsK+(z)D_{s}^{K^{+}}(z), and DdK+(z)D_{d}^{K^{+}}(z). This work gives a significant modification of the original model, and the predictions can be tested by future experiments on the fragmentation functions of the kaon.Comment: 6 Latex pages, 10 figures, to appear in EPJ

Silk and Society: Silk Manufacturers and Users 1870-1930. Based on a Study of the Haskell Silk Company, Westbrook, Maine

    Get PDF
This thesis makes several contributions to the history of American silks. It shows that some of the most exemplary and well known U.S. silks were manufactured by Haskell despite its location at the far periphery of the major Mid Atlantic silk manufacturing region. It traces the changes in the domestic silk product over time and argues that changing consumer tastes and lifestyle exerted a major influence on what was made and sold

Unrelated Helpers in a Primitively Eusocial Wasp: Is Helping Tailored Towards Direct Fitness?

    Get PDF
The paper wasp Polistes dominulus is unique among the social insects in that nearly one-third of co-foundresses are completely unrelated to the dominant individual whose offspring they help to rear and yet reproductive skew is high. These unrelated subordinates stand to gain direct fitness through nest inheritance, raising the question of whether their behaviour is adaptively tailored towards maximizing inheritance prospects. Unusually, in this species, a wealth of theory and empirical data allows us to predict how unrelated subordinates should behave. Based on these predictions, here we compare helping in subordinates that are unrelated or related to the dominant wasp across an extensive range of field-based behavioural contexts. We find no differences in foraging effort, defense behaviour, aggression or inheritance rank between unrelated helpers and their related counterparts. Our study provides no evidence, across a number of behavioural scenarios, that the behaviour of unrelated subordinates is adaptively modified to promote direct fitness interests

Fitting Precision Electroweak Data with Exotic Heavy Quarks

    Get PDF
The 1999 precision electroweak data from LEP and SLC persist in showing some slight discrepancies from the assumed standard model, mostly regarding bb and cc quarks. We show how their mixing with exotic heavy quarks could result in a more consistent fit of all the data, including two unconventional interpretations of the top quark.Comment: 7 pages, no figure, 2 typos corrected, 1 reference update

Axial vector form factor of nucleons in a light-cone diquark model

    Get PDF
The nucleon axial vector form factor is investigated in a light-cone quark spectator diquark model, in which Melosh rotations are applied to both the quark and vector diquark. It is found that this model gives a very good description of available experimental data and the results have very little dependence on the parameters of the model. The relation between the nucleon axial constant and the anomalous magnetic moment of nucleons is also discussed.Comment: 8 pages, Revtex4, 1 figure, version to be published in Phys. Rev.

Recalculation of Pion Compton Scattering in Perturbative QCD

    Get PDF
We recalculated pion virtual Compton scattering in perturbative QCD in this paper. Our calculation avoids some deficiencies in existing literatures, and treats real Compton scattering as a limit case in which the mass of the virtual photon equals to zero. Expressions of the hard scattering amplitudes from 10 independent diagrams are given explicitly in the text. By comparing the effects of different distribution amplitudes on physical observables, we studied the self-consistence of pQCD calculation of this problem.Comment: 15 pages, 8 eps figs. accepted by Phys. Hadronic Production of the Doubly Charmed Baryon Ξcc\Xi_{cc} with Intrinsic Charm

The effects of the intrinsic charm on the hadronic production of Ξcc\Xi_{cc} are studied. By taking reasonable intrinsic charm component into account, the change of the theoretical prediction on the production of Ξcc\Xi_{cc} for LHC and Tevatron is small, but in contrast it may enhance significantly for SELEX. The reason is that the collision energy at LHC and Tevatron is so large that the gluon-gluon fusion sub-process, which is irrelevant to intrinsic charm, becomes dominant. But the situation for SELEX is quite different. Our numerical results for SELEX show that by considering all the contributions from various sub-processes, the predicted cross-section may be enhanced by a factor so big as 10210^2 due to a modulating intrinsic charm being taken into account. Therefore, the hadronic production of Ξcc\Xi_{cc} at SELEX may be sensitive enough in observing the intrinsic charm inside the incident hadrons.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures. More discussions are adde
