We report about some Chemical Vapor Deposition approaches used
to produce a variety of C-sp2 and C-sp3 crystalline nanostructures. The methodologies
developed in our laboratories provide custom-made solutions for the fabrication
of specific carbon nanomaterials with properties tailored for applications in the field
of nanotechnology
Macroscopic self standing SWCNT fibers as efficient electron emitters with very high emission current for robust cold cathodes
A novel of self-standing nanotube-based cold cathode is described. The electron emitter is
a single macroscopic fibre spun from neat single wall carbon nanotubes and consists of an
ensemble of nanotube bundles held together by van der Waals forces. Field emission measurements
carried out using two different types of apparatus demonstrated the long working
life of the realised cathode. The system is able to emit at very high current densities, up
to 13 A/cm2, and shows very low values of both turn on and threshold field, 0.12 V/lm and
0.21 V/lm, respectively. Such easy to handle self-standing electron sources assure good
performances and represent an enabling technology for a scalable production of cold
cathodes.

1. Introduction
Due to a unique combination of properties, including high
electrical and thermal conductivity, and high mechanical/
chemical/thermal stability, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have
been recognised as ideal candidate materials for application
in microelectronics [1]. Moreover, the high aspect ratio characterising
this intriguing material makes possible to significantly
strengthen electric fields into the vicinity of
nanotubes tips
Photonuclear reactions of actinides in the giant dipole resonance region
Photonuclear reactions at energies covering the giant dipole resonance (GDR)
region are analyzed with an approach based on nuclear photoabsorption followed
by the process of competition between light particle evaporation and fission
for the excited nucleus. The photoabsorption cross section at energies covering
the GDR region is contributed by both the Lorentz type GDR cross section and
the quasideuteron cross section. The evaporation-fission process of the
compound nucleus is simulated in a Monte-Carlo framework. Photofission reaction
cross sections are analyzed in a systematic manner in the energy range of
10-20 MeV for the actinides Th, U and Np.
Photonuclear cross sections for the medium-mass nuclei Cu and Zn,
for which there are no fission events, are also presented. The study reproduces
satisfactorily the available experimental data of photofission cross sections
at GDR energy region and the increasing trend of nuclear fissility with the
fissility parameter for the actinides.Comment: 4 pages including 2 tables and 1 figur
Measurement of lipocalin-2 and syndecan-4 levels to differentiate bacterial from viral infection in children with community-acquired pneumonia
BACKGROUND:
In this study, we evaluated the lipocalin-2 (LIP2) and syndecan-4 (SYN4) levels in children who were hospitalized for radiologically confirmed CAP in order to differentiate bacterial from viral infection. The results regarding the LIP2 and SYN4 diagnostic outcomes were compared with the white blood cell (WBC) count and C reactive protein (CRP) levels.
METHODS:
A total of 110 children <14 years old who were hospitalized for radiologically confirmed CAP were enrolled. Serum samples were obtained upon admission and on day 5 to measure the levels of LIP2, SYN4, and CRP as well as the WBC. Polymerase chain reaction of the respiratory secretions and tests on blood samples were performed to detect respiratory viruses, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
RESULTS:
CAP was considered to be due to a probable bacterial infection in 74 children (67.3 %) and due to a probable viral infection in 16 children (14.5 %). Overall, 84 children (76.4 %) were diagnosed with severe CAP. The mean values of the WBC count and the LIP2 and SYN4 levels did not differ among the probable bacterial, probable viral, and undetermined cases. However, the CRP serum concentrations were significantly higher in children with probable bacterial CAP than in those with probable viral disease (32.2 \ub1 55.5 mg/L vs 9.4 \ub1 17.0 mg/L, p < 0.05). The WBC count was the best predictor of severe CAP, but the differences among the studied variables were marginal. The WBC count was significantly lower on day 5 in children with probable bacterial CAP (p < 0.01) and in those with an undetermined etiology (p < 0.01). The CRP and LIP2 levels were significantly lower 5 days after enrollment in all of the studied groups, independent of the supposed etiology of CAP (p < 0.01 for all comparisons). No statistically significant variation was observed for SYN4.
CONCLUSIONS:
Measuring the LIP2 and SYN4 levels does not appear to solve the problem of the poor reliability of routine laboratory tests in defining the etiology and severity of pediatric CAP. Currently, the CRP levels and WBC, when combined with evaluation of clinical data, can be used to limit the overuse of antibiotics as much as possible and to provide the best treatment to the patient
Search for composite and exotic fermions at LEP 2
A search for unstable heavy fermions with the DELPHI detector at LEP is
reported. Sequential and non-canonical leptons, as well as excited leptons and
quarks, are considered. The data analysed correspond to an integrated
luminosity of about 48 pb^{-1} at an e^+e^- centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV
and about 20 pb^{-1} equally shared between the centre-of-mass energies of 172
GeV and 161 GeV. The search for pair-produced new leptons establishes 95%
confidence level mass limits in the region between 70 GeV/c^2 and 90 GeV/c^2,
depending on the channel. The search for singly produced excited leptons and
quarks establishes upper limits on the ratio of the coupling of the excited

Search for lightest neutralino and stau pair production in light gravitino scenarios with stau NLSP
Promptly decaying lightest neutralinos and long-lived staus are searched for
in the context of light gravitino scenarios. It is assumed that the stau is the
next to lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP) and that the lightest
neutralino is the next to NLSP (NNLSP). Data collected with the Delphi detector
at centre-of-mass energies from 161 to 183 \GeV are analysed. No evidence of
the production of these particles is found. Hence, lower mass limits for both
kinds of particles are set at 95% C.L.. The mass of gaugino-like neutralinos is
found to be greater than 71.5 GeV/c^2. In the search for long-lived stau,
masses less than 70.0 to 77.5 \GeVcc are excluded for gravitino masses from 10
to 150 \eVcc . Combining this search with the searches for stable heavy leptons
and Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model staus a lower limit of 68.5 \GeVcc
may be set for the stau mas
Results from the CUORE-0 experiment
The CUORE-0 experiment searched for neutrinoless double beta decay in 130Te using an array of 52 tellurium dioxide crystals, operated as bolometers at a temperature of 10 mK. It took data in the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (Italy) since March 2013 to March 2015. We present the results of a search for neutrinoless double beta decay in 9.8 kg-years 130Te exposure that allowed us to set the most stringent limit to date on this half-life. The performance of the detector in terms of background and energy resolution is also reported
Low energy analysis techniques for CUORE
CUORE is a tonne-scale cryogenic detector operating at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) that uses tellurium dioxide bolometers to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 130Te. CUORE is also suitable to search for low energy rare events such as solar axions or WIMP scattering, thanks to its ultra-low background and large target mass. However, to conduct such sensitive searches requires improving the energy threshold to 10 keV. In this paper, we describe the analysis techniques developed for the low energy analysis of CUORE-like detectors, using the data acquired from November 2013 to March 2015 by CUORE-0, a single-tower prototype designed to validate the assembly procedure and new cleaning techniques of CUORE. We explain the energy threshold optimization, continuous monitoring of the trigger efficiency, data and event selection, and energy calibration at low energies in detail. We also present the low energy background spectrum of CUORE-0 below 60keV. Finally, we report the sensitivity of CUORE to WIMP annual modulation using the CUORE-0 energy threshold and background, as well as an estimate of the uncertainty on the nuclear quenching factor from nuclear recoils inCUORE-0
