    A comparative study on the effect of commercial fish feeds on the growth of Thai pangas, Pangasius hypophthalmus

    A 70 day long experiment was carried out to evaluate three commercial pangas feeds available in Bangladesh viz. Quality Feeds Ltd. (QF), Aftab Bohumukhi Farm Ltd. (ABF) and Saudi-Bangla Fish Feed Ltd. (SBFF) (designated as treatment_T1 T2 and T3) on the growth of Pangas, Pangasius hypophthalmus. Each treatment had two replicates using six experimental ponds of each 80m2 size. The stocking density was 250 fish/80m2. At the beginning, the fish were fed twice daily at 15% of their body weight which was gradually reduced to 10 and 6%, respectively for the rest of the period. The ranges of water quality parameters observed were: temperature 29.0°C- ~5.1 °C, pH 6.85 - 8.52, DO 1.71 - 7.65 mg/1 and transparency or Secchi depth 14.5 - 30.0 em. The mean weight gain of fish was significantly (~<0.05) higher in T3 followed by T2 and T. The specific growth rate (SGR) ranged. between 4.09 and 5.06, feed conversion ratio (FCR) values between 1.54 and 1.61 with treatment T1 showing the lowest FCR. Protein efficiency ratio (PER) values ranged between 2.03 and 2.11. The survival of fish varied between 90.4 and 91.6%. The significantly (P<0.05) highest production of fish (kg/ha/70 days) and profit (Tk/ha/70 days) was observe in T3 (SBFF) followed by T2 (ABF) and T1 (QF), respectively.     The Master’s thesis is comprised of four projects in the realm of machine learning and signal processing. The abstract of the thesis is divided into four parts and presented as follows, Abstract 1: A Kullback-Leibler Divergence-Based Predictor for Inter-Subject Associative BCI. Inherent inter-subject variability in sensorimotor brain dynamics hinders the transferability of brain-computer interface (BCI) model parameters across subjects. An individual training session is essential for effective BCI control to compensate for variability. We report a Kullback-Leibler Divergence (KLD)-based predictor for inter-subject associative BCI. An online dataset comprising left/right hand, both feet, and tongue motor imagery tasks was used to show correlation between the proposed inter-subject predictor and BCI performance. Linear regression between the KLD predictor and BCI performance showed a strong inverse correlation (r = -0.62). The KLD predictor can act as an indicator for generalized inter-subject associative BCI designs. Abstract 2: Multiclass Sensorimotor BCI Based on Simultaneous EEG and fNIRS. Hybrid BCI (hBCI) utilizes multiple data modalities to acquire brain signals during motor execution (ME) tasks. Studies have shown significant enhancements in the classification of binary class ME-hBCIs; however, four-class ME-hBCI classification is yet to be done using multiclass algorithms. We present a quad-class classification of ME-hBCI tasks from simultaneous EEG-fNIRS recordings. Appropriate features were extracted from EEG-fNIRS signals and combined for hybrid features and classified with support vector machine. Results showed a significant increase in hybrid accuracy over single modalities and show hybrid method’s performance enhancement capability. Abstract 3: Deep Learning for Improved Inter-Subject EEG-fNIRS Hybrid BCI Performance. Multimodality based hybrid BCI has become famous for performance improvement; however, the inherent inter-subject and inter-session variation between participants brain dynamics poses obstacles in achieving high performance. This work presents an inter-subject hBCI to classify right/left-hand MI tasks from simultaneous EEG-fNIRS recordings of 29 healthy subjects. State-of-art features were extracted from EEG-fNIRS signals and combined for hybrid features, and finally, classified using deep Long short-term memory classifier. Results showed an increase in the inter-subject performance for the hybrid system while making the system more robust to brain dynamics change and hints to the feasibility of EEG-fNIRS based inter-subject hBCI. Abstract 4: Microwave Based Glucose Concentration Classification by Machine Learning. Non-invasive blood sugar measurement attracts increased attention in recent years, given the increase in diabetes-related complications and inconvenience in the traditional ways using blood. This work utilized machine learning (ML) algorithms to classify glucose concentration (GC) from the measured broadband microwave scattering signals (S11). An N-type microwave adapter pair was utilized to measure the sweeping frequency scattering-parameter (S-parameter) of the glucose solutions with GC varying from 50-10,000 dg/dL. Dielectric parameters were retrieved from the measured wideband complex S-parameters based on the modified Debye dielectric dispersion model. Results indicate that the best algorithm can achieve a perfect classification accuracy and suggests an alternate way to develop a GC detection method using ML algorithms

    Spatial Network Analysis as a tool for measuring change in accessibility over time: limits of transport investment as a driver for UK regional development.

    This paper develops spatial network metrics that contribute to analysis of regional development. We use the sDNA software to derive longitudinal road network density and efficiency measures based on the network within a 1-hr travel time buffer. We estimate this travel time itself from network shape and show it to be comparable to Google Maps travel time data. Economic analysis of 374 Local Administrative Units in the UK mainland shows cross-sectional association between our network density and efficiency measures and Gross Value Added per capita (GVApc), whether measured in bivariate correlation or in multiple regression controlling for population, education, economic activity rate and rail stations. This is however both mediated and moderated by the proportion of knowledge-based businesses; regions lacking a strong knowledge-based sector show only weak correspondence between GVApc and accessibility. Looking at change over time, increase in network accessibility is linked to growth in the knowledge-based sector, but inversely linked to economic performance during the 8-year period studied, a finding which remains unexplained. Although further substantiation is needed, results suggest that the policy of transport investment as a driver of UK economic growth may be less effective in areas lacking potential to develop a strong knowledge-based sector

    Carbon Doping of MgB2 by Toluene and Malic-Acid-in-Toluene

    The decomposition of malic acid in the presence of Mg and B was studied using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) which revealed that malic acid reacted with Mg but not B. Also, the addition of toluene to dissolve malic acid followed by subsequent drying resulted in no reaction with Mg, indicating that the malic acid had decomposed during the dissolution/drying stage. The total carbon contributed by toluene versus a toluene/5 wt% malic acid mixture was measured using a LECO CS600 carbon analyzer. The toluene sample contained ~0.4 wt% C while the toluene/malic acid mixture had ~1.5 wt% C, demonstrating that the toluene contributed a significant amount of carbon to the final product. Resistivity measurements on powder-in-tube MgB2 monofilamentary wires established that the toluene/malic acid doped sample had the highest Bc2. However, the toluene-only sample had the highest transport Jc over most of the magnetic field range (0-9 T), equaled only by that of toluene/malic acid sample in fields above 9 T.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, 1 tabl

    Socio-economic situational analysis of tea plantation workers: a case study from Lubachhara Tea Garden, Sylhet

    Tea is the second most highly consumed beverage in the world. The British colonial rulers introduced tea plantation in the early 1830s in the Indian subcontinent. Since then, it has been cultivated and consumed in enormous quantities. In Bangladesh, the first tea plantation was launched in the Sylhet district. Tea is an important cash crop in Bangladesh. , It is widely consumed locally and exported to a few countries. The present study was carried out in Lubachhara tea garden, Sylhet as a case to examine the socio economic situation of the tea plantation workers. Using a mixed method approach with a sample of 252 workers, the study explored the state of the workers with respect to some basic needs, such as health, sanitation, housing, nutrition, education, wages, and service benefits which were found to be very deplorable and inhumane.     Anti-MRSA Activity of Oxysporone and Xylitol from the Endophytic Fungus Pestalotia sp. Growing on the Sundarbans Mangrove Plant Heritiera fomes

    Heritiera fomes Buch.-Ham., a mangrove plant from the Sundarbans, has adapted to a unique habitat, muddy saline water, anaerobic soil, brackish tidal activities and high microbial competition. Endophytic fungal association protects this plant from adverse environmental conditions. This plant is used in Bangladeshi folk medicine, but it has not been extensively studied phytochemically, and there is hardly any report on investigation on endophytic fungi growing on this plant. In this study, endophytic fungi were isolated from the surface sterilized cladodes and leaves of H. fomes. The antimicrobial activities were evaluated against two Gram-positive and two Gram-negative bacteria and the fungal strain, Candida albicans. Extracts of Pestalotia sp. showed activities against all test bacterial strains, except that the EtOAc extract was inactive against E. coli. The structures of the purified compounds, oxysporone and xylitol, were elucidated by spectroscopic means. The anti-MRSA potential of the isolated compounds were determined against various MRSA strains, i.e., ATCC 25923, SA-1199B, RN4220, XU212, EMRSA-15 and EMRSA-16, with MIC values ranging from 32-128 g/mL.     A measurement of the tau mass and the first CPT test with tau leptons

    We measure the mass of the tau lepton to be 1775.1+-1.6(stat)+-1.0(syst.) MeV using tau pairs from Z0 decays. To test CPT invariance we compare the masses of the positively and negatively charged tau leptons. The relative mass difference is found to be smaller than 3.0 10^-3 at the 90% confidence level.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, Submitted to Phys. Letts.

    First Measurement of Z/gamma* Production in Compton Scattering of Quasi-real Photons

    We report the first observation of Z/gamma* production in Compton scattering of quasi-real photons. This is a subprocess of the reaction e+e- to e+e-Z/gamma*, where one of the final state electrons is undetected. Approximately 55 pb-1 of data collected in the year 1997 at an e+e- centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV with the OPAL detector at LEP have been analysed. The Z/gamma* from Compton scattering has been detected in the hadronic decay channel. Within well defined kinematic bounds, we measure the product of cross-section and Z/gamma* branching ratio to hadrons to be (0.9+-0.3+-0.1) pb for events with a hadronic mass larger than 60 GeV, dominated by (e)eZ production. In the hadronic mass region between 5 GeV and 60 GeV, dominated by (e)egamma* production, this product is found to be (4.1+-1.6+-0.6) pb. Our results agree with the predictions of two Monte Carlo event generators, grc4f and PYTHIA.Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX, 5 eps figures included, submitted to Physics Letters

    Search for Higgs Bosons in e+e- Collisions at 183 GeV

    The data collected by the OPAL experiment at sqrts=183 GeV were used to search for Higgs bosons which are predicted by the Standard Model and various extensions, such as general models with two Higgs field doublets and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of approximately 54pb-1. None of the searches for neutral and charged Higgs bosons have revealed an excess of events beyond the expected background. This negative outcome, in combination with similar results from searches at lower energies, leads to new limits for the Higgs boson masses and other model parameters. In particular, the 95% confidence level lower limit for the mass of the Standard Model Higgs boson is 88.3 GeV. Charged Higgs bosons can be excluded for masses up to 59.5 GeV. In the MSSM, mh > 70.5 GeV and mA > 72.0 GeV are obtained for tan{beta}>1, no and maximal scalar top mixing and soft SUSY-breaking masses of 1 TeV. The range 0.8 < tanb < 1.9 is excluded for minimal scalar top mixing and m{top} < 175 GeV. More general scans of the MSSM parameter space are also considered.Comment: 49 pages.     A Measurement of the Product Branching Ratio f(b->Lambda_b).BR(Lambda_b->Lambda X) in Z0 Decays

    The product branching ratio, f(b->Lambda_b).BR(Lambda_b->Lambda X), where Lambda_b denotes any weakly-decaying b-baryon, has been measured using the OPAL detector at LEP. Lambda_b are selected by the presence of energetic Lambda particles in bottom events tagged by the presence of displaced secondary vertices. A fit to the momenta of the Lambda particles separates signal from B meson and fragmentation backgrounds. The measured product branching ratio is f(b->Lambda_b).BR(Lambda_b->Lambda X) = (2.67+-0.38(stat)+0.67-0.60(sys))% Combined with a previous OPAL measurement, one obtains f(b->Lambda_b).BR(Lambda_b->Lambda X) = (3.50+-0.32(stat)+-0.35(sys))%.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX, 3 eps figs included, submitted to the European Physical Journal
