Superconducting MoSi nanowires
We have fabricated disordered superconducting nanowires of molybdenium
silicide. A molybdenium nanowire is first deposited on top of silicon, and the
alloy is formed by rapid thermal annealing. The method allows tuning of the
crystal growth to optimise, e.g., the resistivity of the alloy for potential
applications in quantum phase slip devices and superconducting nanowire
single-photon detectors. The wires have effective diameters from 42 to 79 nm,
enabling the observation of crossover from conventional superconductivity to
regimes affected by thermal and quantum fluctuations. In the smallest diameter
wire and at temperatures well below the superconducting critical temperature,
we observe residual resistance and negative magnetoresistance, which can be
considered as fingerprints of quantum phase slips
Fabrication and test of a variable conductance heat pipe
A variable conductance heat pipe (VCHP) with feedback control was fabricated with a reservoir-condenser volume ratio of 10 and an axially grooved action section. Tests of the heat transport capability were greater than or equal to the analytical predictions for the no gas case. When gas was added, the pipe performance degraded by 18% at zero tilt as was expected. The placement of the reservoir heater and the test fixture cooling fins are believed to have caused a superheated vapor condition in the reservoir. Erroneously high reservoir temperature indications resulted from this condition. The observed temperature gradients in the reservoir lend support to this theory. The net result was higher than predicted reservoir temperatures. Also, significant increases in minimum heat load resulted for controller set point temperatures higher than 0 C. At 30 C, control within the tolerance band was maintained, but high reservoir heater power was required. Analyses showed that control is not possible for reasonably low reservoir heater power. This is supported by the observation of a significant reservoir heat leak through the condenser
A Corona Australis cloud filament seen in NIR scattered light II: Comparison with sub-millimeter data
We study a northern part of the Corona Australis molecular cloud that
consists of a filament and a dense sub-millimetre core inside the filament. Our
aim is to measure dust temperature and sub-mm emissivity within the region. We
also look for confirmation that near-infrared (NIR) surface brightness can be
used to study the structure of even very dense clouds. We extend our previous
NIR mapping south of the filament. The dust colour temperatures are estimated
using Spitzer 160um and APEX/Laboca 870um maps. The column densities derived
based on the reddening of background stars, NIR surface brightness, and thermal
sub-mm dust emission are compared. A three dimensional toy model of the
filament is used to study the effect of anisotropic illumination on
near-infrared surface brightness and the reliability of dust temperature
determination. Relative to visual extinction, the estimated emissivity at 870um
is kappa(870) = (1.3 +- 0.4) x 10^{-5} 1/mag. This is similar to the values
found in diffuse medium. A significant increase in the sub-millimetre
emissivity seems to be excluded. In spite of saturation, NIR surface brightness
was able to accurately pinpoint, and better than measurements of the colour
excesses of background stars, the exact location of the column density maximum.
Both near- and far-infrared data show that the intensity of the radiation field

Nanostructuring Graphene by Dense Electronic Excitation
The ability to manufacture tailored graphene nanostructures is a key factor
to fully exploit its enormous technological potential. We have investigated
nanostructures created in graphene by swift heavy ion induced folding. For our
experiments, single layers of graphene exfoliated on various substrates and
freestanding graphene have been irradiated and analyzed by atomic force and
high resolution transmission electron microscopy as well as Raman spectroscopy.
We show that the dense electronic excitation in the wake of the traversing ion
yields characteristic nanostructures each of which may be fabricated by
choosing the proper irradiation conditions. These nanostructures include unique
morphologies such as closed bilayer edges with a given chirality or nanopores
within supported as well as freestanding graphene. The length and orientation
of the nanopore, and thus of the associated closed bilayer edge, may be simply
controlled by the direction of the incoming ion beam. In freestanding graphene,
swift heavy ion irradiation induces extremely small openings, offering the
possibility to perforate graphene membranes in a controlled way.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Nanotechnolog
A model for particle formation and growth in the atmosphere with molecular resolution in size
International audienceThe formation and growth of atmospheric aerosol particles is considered using an exact discrete method with molecular resolution in size space. The method is immune to numerical diffusion problems that are a nuisance for typical simulation methods using a sectional representation for the particle size distribution. For condensational growth, a slight modification is proposed for the Fuchs-Sutugin expression, which improves the prediction of the growth rate of nano-sized particles by as much as a factor of two. The presented method is applied to particle formation in a Finnish Boreal forest and is shown to capture the essential features of the dynamics quite nicely. Furthermore, it is shown that the growth of the particles is roughly linear, which means that the amount of condensable vapour is constant (of the order 1013 1/m3)
