    Addressing COVID-19 Communication and Management by a Systems Thinking Approach

    A systemic stock-flow diagram is proposed for the communication and management of health services and strategies concerning the COVID-19 epidemic. The possible role of government interventions in activating systemic leverage points is also addressed. The presented approach, based on Systems Thinking, can create the basis for creating an analytical simulator of the disease spread, and at the same time the diagram can constitute a powerful tool for improving the quality of information for both policy-makers and the general public in situations of epidemics

    Microelastic wave field signatures and their implications for microstructure identification

    AbstractThis work combines closed-form and computational analyses to elucidate the dynamic properties, termed signatures, of waves propagating through solids defined by the theory of elasticity with microstructure and the potential of such properties to identify microstructure evolution over a material’s lifetime. First, the study presents analytical dispersion relations and frequency-dependent velocities of waves propagating in microelastic solids. A detailed parametric analysis of the results show that elastic solids with microstructure recover traditional gradient elasticity under certain conditions but demonstrate a higher degree of flexibility in adapting to observed wave forms across a wide frequency spectrum. In addition, a set of simulations demonstrates the ability of the model to quantify the presence of damage, just another type of microstructure, through fitting of the model parameters, especially the one associated with the characteristic length scale of the underlying microstructure, to an explicit geometric representation of voids in different damage states

    A qualitative study on family carers views on how end-of-life communication contributes to palliative oriented care in nursing home.

    Background. Although family-centered communication about end-of-life care has been recognized to promote palliative-oriented care in nursing home (NH), how this communication may work is still unknown. Therefore, we explored the mechanisms by which end-of-life communication may contribute to palliative-oriented care in NH from the perspective of bereaved family carers.Methods. A descriptive qualitative design was performed. Interviews were conducted with 32 bereaved family carers whose relative had died between 45 days to 9 months prior from 13 different NHs. A two-steps analysis process firstly with deductive and then with inductive content analysis was adopted.Results. Four mechanisms by which end-of-life communication contributed to palliative-oriented care were identified: a) promoting family carers understanding about their relative's health conditions, prognosis, and treatments available; b) fostering shared decision-making between healthcare professionals and residents/family carers; c) improving knowledge of residents' preferences; and d) improving knowledge of family carers' preferences.Conclusion. Clear and in-depth communication provides insight into residents' and family carers' preferences for care and treatment at the end-of-life, and increases understanding and shared decision-making

    Attracted to feed, not to be fed upon – on the biology of Toxomerus basalis (Walker, 1836), the kleptoparasitic ‘sundew flower fly’ (Diptera: Syrphidae)

    The complete life history of the kleptoparasitic ‘sundew flower fly’, Toxomerus basalis, is presented and illustrated. Adults of this species are photographed alive for the first time, including video recordings of larval and adult behaviour. Adult flies of both sexes visit Drosera (sundews) and show territorial behaviour around the plants, avoiding the dangerous sticky traps and demonstrating recognition of their larval host plant.     In Situ Label-Free Study of Protein Adsorption on Nanoparticles

    [Image: see text] Improving the design of nanoparticles for use as drug carriers or biosensors requires a better understanding of the protein–nanoparticle interaction. Here, we present a new tool to investigate this interaction in situ and without additional labeling of the proteins and/or nanoparticles. By combining nonresonant second-harmonic light scattering with a modified Langmuir model, we show that it is possible to gain insight into the adsorption behavior of blood proteins, namely fibrinogen, human serum albumin, and transferrin, onto negatively charged polystyrene nanoparticles. The modified Langmuir model gives us access to the maximum amount of adsorbed protein, the apparent binding constant, and Gibbs free energy. Furthermore, we employ the method to investigate the influence of the nanoparticle size on the adsorption of human serum albumin and find that the amount of adsorbed protein increases more than the surface area per nanoparticle for larger diameters

    Assessing the vulnerability of buildings to tsunami in Sydney

    Australia is vulnerable to the impacts of tsunamis and exposure along the SE coast of New South Wales is especially high. Significantly, this is the same area reported to have been affected by repeated large magnitude tsunamis during the Holocene. Efforts are under way to complete probabilistic risk assessments for the region but local government planners and emergency risk managers need information now about building vulnerability in order to develop appropriate risk management strategies. We use the newly revised PTVA-3 Model (Dall'Osso et al., 2009) to assess the relative vulnerability of buildings to damage from a "worst case tsunami" defined by our latest understanding of regional risk – something never before undertaken in Australia. We present selected results from an investigation of building vulnerability within the local government area of Manly – an iconic coastal area of Sydney. We show that a significant proportion of buildings (in particular, residential structures) are classified as having "High" and "Very High" Relative Vulnerability Index scores. Furthermore, other important buildings (e.g., schools, nursing homes and transport structures) are also vulnerable to damage. Our results have serious implications for immediate emergency risk management, longer-term land-use zoning and development, and building design and construction standards. Based on the work undertaken here, we recommend further detailed assessment of the vulnerability of coastal buildings in at risk areas, development of appropriate risk management strategies and a detailed program of community engagement to increase overall resilience
