    Cosmic microwave background multipole alignments in slab topologies

    Several analyses of the microwave sky maps from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) have drawn attention to alignments amongst the low-order multipoles. Amongst the various possible explanations, an effect of cosmic topology has been invoked by several authors. We focus on an alignment of the first four multipoles (\ell = 2 to 5) found by Land and Magueijo (2005), and investigate the distribution of their alignment statistic for a set of simulated cosmic microwave background maps for cosmologies with slab-like topology. We find that this topology does offer a modest increase in the probability of the observed value, but that even for the smallest topology considered the probability of the observed value remains below one percent.Comment: 6 pages RevTex with 6 figures included.     Why are some people with neurological illness more resilient than others?

    The current qualitative study was designed to evaluate the coping strategies of people living with a chronic progressive neurological illness and their carers. The neurological illnesses were Huntington&rsquo;s disease, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson&rsquo;s disease. Participants included 15 people who showed high levels of adjustment and 15 who showed low levels of adjustment. Participants were selected from an earlier study, to ensure that they satisfied the inclusion criteria for the current study. Interviews were completed to determine the strategies used to cope with the demands of the illness. Participants who demonstrated good adjustment were more likely to draw on social support to provide them with the resources to deal with the illness. In contrast, those who evidenced poor adjustment were more likely to draw on external supports to complete tasks for them. The implications of these findings for people with chronic neurological illnesses and their families are discussed.<br /

    NICMOS Images of the GG Tau Circumbinary Disk

    We present deep, near-infrared images of the circumbinary disk surrounding the pre-main-sequence binary star, GG Tau A, obtained with NICMOS aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The spatially resolved proto-planetary disk scatters roughly 1.5% of the stellar flux, with a near-to-far side flux ratio of ~1.4, independent of wavelength, and colors that are comparable to the central source; all of these properties are significantly different from the earlier ground-based observations. New Monte Carlo scattering simulations of the disk emphasize that the general properties of the disk, such as disk flux, near side to far side flux ratio and integrated colors, can be approximately reproduced using ISM-like dust grains, without the presence of either circumstellar disks or large dust grains, as had previously been suggested. A single parameter phase function is fitted to the observed azimuthal variation in disk flux, providing a lower limit on the median grain size of 0.23 micron. Our analysis, in comparison to previous simulations, shows that the major limitation to the study of grain growth in T Tauri disk systems through scattered light lies in the uncertain ISM dust grain properties. Finally, we use the 9 year baseline of astrometric measurements of the binary to solve the complete orbit, assuming that the binary is coplanar with the circumbinary ring. We find that the estimated 1 sigma range on disk inner edge to semi-major axis ratio, 3.2 < Rin/a < 6.7, is larger than that estimated by previous SPH simulations of binary-disk interactions.Comment: 40 pages, 8 postscript figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Measuring the Mass of a Pre-Main Sequence Binary Star Through the Orbit of TWA 5A

    We present the results of a five year monitoring campaign of the close binary TWA 5Aab in the TW Hydrae association, using speckle and adaptive optics on the W.M. Keck 10 m telescopes. These measurements were taken as part of our ongoing monitoring of pre-main sequence (PMS) binaries in an effort to increase the number of dynamically determined PMS masses and thereby calibrate the theoretical PMS evolutionary tracks. Our observations have allowed us to obtain the first determination of this system's astrometric orbit. We find an orbital period of 5.94 +- 0.09 years and a semi-major axis of 0.066" +- 0.005". Combining these results with a kinematic distance, we calculate a total mass of 0.71 +- 0.14 M_sun (D/44 pc)^3. for this system. This mass measurement, as well as the estimated age of this system, are consistent to within 2σ\sigma of all theoretical models considered. In this analysis, we properly account for correlated uncertainties, and show that while these correlations are generally ignored, they increase the formal uncertainties by up to a factor of five and therefore are important to incorporate. With only a few more years of observation, this type of measurement will allow the theoretical models to be distinguished

    Outlook for tuberculosis elimination in California: An individual-based stochastic model.

    RationaleAs part of the End TB Strategy, the World Health Organization calls for low-tuberculosis (TB) incidence settings to achieve pre-elimination (&lt;10 cases per million) and elimination (&lt;1 case per million) by 2035 and 2050, respectively. These targets require testing and treatment for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI).ObjectivesTo estimate the ability and costs of testing and treatment for LTBI to reach pre-elimination and elimination targets in California.MethodsWe created an individual-based epidemic model of TB, calibrated to historical cases. We evaluated the effects of increased testing (QuantiFERON-TB Gold) and treatment (three months of isoniazid and rifapentine). We analyzed four test and treat targeting strategies: (1) individuals with medical risk factors (MRF), (2) non-USB, (3) both non-USB and MRF, and (4) all Californians. For each strategy, we estimated the effects of increasing test and treat by a factor of 2, 4, or 10 from the base case. We estimated the number of TB cases occurring and prevented, and net and incremental costs from 2017 to 2065 in 2015 U.S. dollars. Efficacy, costs, adverse events, and treatment dropout were estimated from published data. We estimated the cost per case averted and per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) gained.Measurements and main resultsIn the base case, 106,000 TB cases are predicted to 2065. Pre-elimination was achieved by 2065 in three scenarios: a 10-fold increase in the non-USB and persons with MRF (by 2052), and 4- or 10-fold increase in all Californians (by 2058 and 2035, respectively). TB elimination was not achieved by any intervention scenario. The most aggressive strategy, 10-fold in all Californians, achieved a case rate of 8 (95% UI 4-16) per million by 2050. Of scenarios that reached pre-elimination, the incremental net cost was 20billion(nonUSBandMRF)to20 billion (non-USB and MRF) to 48 billion. These had an incremental cost per QALY of 657,000to657,000 to 3.1 million. A more efficient but somewhat less effective single-lifetime test strategy reached as low as $80,000 per QALY.ConclusionsSubstantial gains can be made in TB control in coming years by scaling-up current testing and treatment in non-USB and those with medical risks
