A Contracting, Turbulent, Starless Core in the Serpens Cluster
We present combined single-dish and interferometric CS(2--1) and N2H+(1--0)
observations of a compact core in the NW region of the Serpens molecular cloud.
The core is starless according to observations from optical to millimeter
wavelengths and its lines have turbulent widths and ``infall asymmetry''. Line
profile modeling indicates supersonic inward motions v_in>0.34 km/s over an
extended region L>12000AU. The high infall speed and large extent exceeds the
predictions of most thermal ambipolar diffusion models and points to a more
dynamical process for core formation. A short (dynamic) timescale, ~1e5
yr=L/v_in, is also suggested by the low N2H+ abundance ~1e-10.Comment: 11 pages including 2 figures. Accepted for publication in the

Vortex ratchet reversal: The role of interstitial vortices
Triangular arrays of Ni nanotriangles embedded in superconducting Nb films
exhibit unexpected dynamical vortex effects. Collective pinning with a vortex
lattice configuration different from the expected fundamental triangular
"Abrikosov state" is found. The vortex motion which prevails against the
triangular periodic potential is produced by channelling effects between
triangles. Interstitial vortices coexisting with pinned vortices in this
asymmetric potential, lead to ratchet reversal, i.e. a DC output voltage which
changes sign with the amplitude of an applied alternating drive current. In
this landscape, ratchet reversal is always observed at all magnetic fields (all
numbers of vortices) and at different temperatures. The ratchet reversal is
unambiguously connected to the presence of two locations for the vortices:

Ca impurity in small mixed He-He clusters
The structure of small mixed helium clusters doped with one calcium atom has
been determined within the diffusion Monte Carlo framework. The results show
that the calcium atom sits at the He-He interface. This is in agreement
with previous studies, both experimental and theoretical, performed for large
clusters. A comparison between the results obtained for the largest cluster we
have considered for each isotope shows a clear tendency of the Ca atom to
reside in a deep dimple at the surface of the cluster for He clusters, and
to become fully solvated for He clusters. We have calculated the absorption
spectrum of Ca around the transition and have found that
it is blue-shifted from that of the free-atom transition by an amount that

PT-symmetry from Lindblad dynamics in a linearized optomechanical system
We analyze a lossy linearized optomechanical system in the red-detuned regime under the rotating wave approximation. This so-called optomechanical state transfer protocol provides effective lossy frequency converter (quantum beam-splitter-like) dynamics where the strength of the coupling between the electromagnetic and mechanical modes is controlled by the optical steady-state amplitude. By restricting to a subspace with no losses, we argue that the transition from mode-hybridization in the strong coupling regime to the damped-dynamics in the weak coupling regime, is a signature of the passive parity-time (PT) symmetry breaking transition in the underlying non-Hermitian quantum dimer. We compare the dynamics generated by the quantum open system (Langevin or Lindblad) approach to that of the PT-symmetric Hamiltonian, to characterize the cases where the two are identical. Additionally, we numerically explore the evolution of separable and correlated number states at zero temperature as well as thermal initial state evolution at room temperature. Our results provide a pathway for realizing non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in optomechanical systems at a quantum level

In this paper we analyze the effect of the cultural values, the social networks and the public programs of support of entrepreneurship. The results show that it individuals with cultural values of security and universalism -mixed- tend to successfully complete the creation of business. By contrast, we found that certain collectivist values such as benevolence, conformity or tradition, negatively affect the company's birth. We also demonstrate that networks that contribute directive knowledge and the programs of public help not financial coming from the Unique Managerial Window (from now on VUE) favour the creation of the enterprise
Transthyretin levels in the vitreous correlate with change in visual acuity after vitrectomy
Background/aim: Little is known about biochemical markers related to change in visual acuity after vitrectomy. The potential use of transthyretin (TTR), a carrier of the retinol/retinol-binding protein, as a biochemical marker protein, was investigated.
Methods: TTR was measured using immunonephelometry in a group of patients (n = 77) in longstanding (> 1 week) retinal detachment (n = 29), fresh (< 1 week) retinal detachment (n = 17), macular holes (n = 20) or diabetic retinopathy (n = 11). Vitreous samples were taken at the start of every vitrectomy procedure. For reference values, cadaver specimens (n = 73) were used.
Results: Reference values for vitreous TTR (median 18 mg/l; IQR 4 to 24 mg/l) comprised 2.2% of reference values for vitreous protein levels (median 538 mg/l; IQR 269 to 987 mg/l). Vitreous TTR values of patients were comparable in all disorders. Vitreous TTR values were higher in phakic (median 22.5 mg/l; IQR 10 to 27 mg/l) than in pseudophakic patients (median 12 mg/l; IQR 8 to 19 mg/l; p = 0.06). Postoperative change in visual acuity correlated well with vitreous TTR values found peroperatively (r(s) = 0.408; p = 0.012). Both change in visual acuity and lens status were the only variables which proved to explain the variance of TTR (multiple correlation coefficient: 0.494; phakic status: t = 2.767; p = 0.0084; and change in visual acuity t = 2.924: p = 0.0056).
Conclusion: Vitreous fluid concentrations of TTR can be regarded as a biochemical marker for retinal function
