Estimating the economic and social impact of conditional cash transfers from the Prospera Program in Mexico

    Get PDF
This research analyses the Prospera program's impact on poverty and income distribution through a computable general equilibrium model. It concludes that transfers to households have a positive impact on the Mexican economy but hide the real problem—the low wage share—that, in the long term, prevents poverty from worsening but does not reduce the population in poverty or inequality. In a scenario without transfers, neither the population in poverty nor the Gini Index decreases significantly. The results obtained lead to an understanding of some of the causes of the high rates of poverty and inequality in Mexico, which in turn have been perpetuated since the economic crisis of 1995. This allows the design of public policies in line with the structural needs of the economy, which combat the problem from the root that generates it, in order to contribute to the reduction of inequality in accordance with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 10.This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Elsevier in Evaluation and Program Planning on 25/05/2023, available online: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.evalprogplan.2023.102321

Did That Just Happen? Sex Differences, Protectiveness, and Perceptions of Sexual Harassment

Sexual harassment (SH) is any unwanted sexual advance, request, or verbal/physical sexual behavior. It must explicitly/implicitly affect employment, interfere with work performance, and create an intimidating, hostile, or offensive atmosphere (Quick & McFadyen, 2017). SH can happen to anyone, but more frequently occurs to females and is perpetrated by men (Gibson et al., 2016; Pryor, 1995). Having a good quality friend has been linked to decreased victimization (Kendrick et al., 2012). The current study looks at the interpretation and identification of SH. Based on the literature, the hypotheses are participants will more likely identify SH when (H1) they are female compared to male (Fitzgerald, 1993; Gibson et al., 2016) and (H2) they score high on friendship quality (Kendrick et al., 2012). It is also hypothesized (H3) that male pronouns will be assigned to the perpetrator and female pronouns will be assigned to the target (Pryor, 1995). Participants were recruited from Amazon MTurk. Participants completed a demographic survey, read one of two scenarios, answered 4-5 questions about what they read, and then answered a 7-question friendship quality scale (Bukowski et al., 1994). In these scenarios, the target of harassment was either the participant or participant’s friend. After reading a scenario, participants were asked to (a) provide a summary of the event, (b) give three words to describe it, (c) decide if it is SH, (d) identify the perpetrator’s gender, and (e) identify the friends’ gender (if applicable). Data collection and preliminary analyses are ongoing

The Symbiosis Interactome: a computational approach reveals novel components, functional interactions and modules in Sinorhizobium meliloti

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Rhizobium</it>-Legume symbiosis is an attractive biological process that has been studied for decades because of its importance in agriculture. However, this system has undergone extensive study and although many of the major factors underpinning the process have been discovered using traditional methods, much remains to be discovered.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Here we present an analysis of the 'Symbiosis Interactome' using novel computational methods in order to address the complex dynamic interactions between proteins involved in the symbiosis of the model bacteria <it>Sinorhizobium meliloti </it>with its plant hosts. Our study constitutes the first large-scale analysis attempting to reconstruct this complex biological process, and to identify novel proteins involved in establishing symbiosis. We identified 263 novel proteins potentially associated with the Symbiosis Interactome. The topology of the Symbiosis Interactome was used to guide experimental techniques attempting to validate novel proteins involved in different stages of symbiosis. The contribution of a set of novel proteins was tested analyzing the symbiotic properties of several <it>S. meliloti </it>mutants. We found mutants with altered symbiotic phenotypes suggesting novel proteins that provide key complementary roles for symbiosis.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our 'systems-based model' represents a novel framework for studying host-microbe interactions, provides a theoretical basis for further experimental validations, and can also be applied to the study of other complex processes such as diseases.</p

The article describes the need to determine the main directions and priorities of the development of the pharmaceutical industry in Ukraine, which is conditioned by real political and socioeconomic processes. The main element here is the introduction and development of a formular system - a complex of management methods for the application of rational, organizational and cost-effective methods of supplying and using drugs to ensure, in specific conditions, high quality medical care and optimal use of available resources.Key words: pharmaceutical industry, pharmacist, pharmacist, higher education

ALMA observations of Elias 2–24: a protoplanetary disk with multiple gaps in the Ophiuchus molecular cloud

We present ALMA 1.3 mm continuum observations at 0. 2 (25 au) resolution of Elias 2–24, one of the largest and brightest protoplanetary disks in the Ophiuchus Molecular Cloud, and we report the presence of three partially resolved concentric gaps located at ∼20, 52, and 87 au from the star. We perform radiative transfer modeling of the disk to constrain its surface density and temperature radial profile and place the disk structure in the context of mechanisms capable of forming narrow gaps such as condensation fronts and dynamical clearing by actively forming planets. In particular, we estimate the disk temperature at the locations of the gaps to be 23, 15, and 12 K (at 20, 52, and 87 au, respectively), very close to the expected snowlines of CO (23–28 K) and N2 (12–15 K). Similarly, by assuming that the widths of the gaps correspond to 4–8× the Hill radii of forming planets (as suggested by numerical simulations), we estimate planet masses in the range of 0.2 1.5 – MJup, 1.0 8.0 – MJup, and 0.02 0.15 – MJup for the inner, middle, and outer gap, respectively. Given the surface density profile of the disk, the amount of “missing mass” at the location of each one of these gaps (between 4 and 20 MJup) is more than sufficient to account for the formation of such planets.Fil: Cieza, Lucas A.. The aim is to identify the problematic specific ones in the process of writing of them in the students of Average Technical Education.
