    Women exposed to a variety of viral and bacterial infections during pregnancy have an increased risk of giving birth to a child with autism, schizophrenia or other neurodevelopmental disorders. Preclinical maternal immune activation (MIA) models are powerful translational tools to investigate mechanisms underlying epidemiological links between infection during pregnancy and offspring neurodevelopmental disorders. Our previous studies documenting the emergence of aberrant behavior in rhesus monkey offspring born to MIA-treated dams extends the rodent MIA model into a species more closely related to humans. Here we present novel neuroimaging data from these animals to further explore the translational potential of the nonhuman primate MIA model. Nine male MIA-treated offspring and 4 controls from our original cohort underwent in vivo positron emission tomography (PET) scanning at approximately 3.5-years of age using [18F] fluoro-l-m-tyrosine (FMT) to measure presynaptic dopamine levels in the striatum, which are consistently elevated in individuals with schizophrenia. Analysis of [18F]FMT signal in the striatum of these nonhuman primates showed that MIA animals had significantly higher [18F]FMT index of influx compared to control animals. In spite of the modest sample size, this group difference reflects a large effect size (Cohen's d = 0.998). Nonhuman primates born to MIA-treated dams exhibited increased striatal dopamine in late adolescence-a hallmark molecular biomarker of schizophrenia. These results validate the MIA model in a species more closely related to humans and open up new avenues for understanding the neurodevelopmental biology of schizophrenia and other neurodevelopmental disorders associated with prenatal immune challenge

    AbstractObjectives. We sought to use intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) to identify the anatomic origin of focal right atrial tachycardias and to define their relation with the crista terminalis (CT).Background. Previous studies using ICE during mapping of atrial flutter and inappropriate sinus tachycardia have demonstrated an important relation between endocardial anatomy and electrophysiologic events. Recent studies have suggested that right atrial tachycardias may also have a characteristic anatomic distribution.Methods. Twenty-three consecutive patients with 27 right atrial tachycardias were included in the study. ICE was used to facilitate activation mapping in relation to endocardial structures. A 20-pole catheter was positioned along the CT under ICE guidance. ICE was also used to assist in guiding detailed mapping with the ablation catheter in the right atrium.Results. Of 27 focal right atrial tachycardias, 18 (67%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 46% to 83%) were on the CT (2 high medial, 8 high lateral, 6 mid and 2 low). ICE identified the location of the tip of the ablation catheter in immediate relation to the CT in all 18 cases. The 20-pole mapping catheter together with echocardiographic visualization of the CT provided a guide to the site of tachycardia origin along this structure. Radiofrequency ablation was successful in 26 (96%) of 27 (95% CI 81% to 100%) right atrial tachycardias.Conclusions. This study demonstrates that approximately two thirds of focal right atrial tachycardias occurring in the absence of structural heart disease will arise along the CT. Recognition of this common distribution may potentially facilitate mapping and ablation of these tachycardias

    Use of P wave configuration during atrial tachycardia to predict site of origin

    Objectives.This study sought to construct an algorithm to differentiate left atrial from right atrial tachycardia foci on the basis of surface electrocardiograms (ECGs).Background.Atrial tachycardia is an uncommon form of supraventricular tachycardia, often resistant to drug therapy.Methods.A total of 31 consecutive patients with atrial tachycardia due to either abnormal automaticity or triggered rhythm underwent detailed atrial endocardial mapping and successful radiofrequency catheter ablation of a single atrial focus. P wave configuration was analyzed from 12-lead ECGs during tachycardia during either spontaneous or pharmacologically induced atrioventricular block. P waves inscribed above the isoelectric line (TP interval) were classified as positive, below as negative, above and below (or conversely, below and above) as biphasic and flat P waves as isoelectric (0). In 17 patients the tachycardia was located in the right atrium: crista terminalis (n = 4); right atrial appendage (n = 4); lateral wall (n = 4); posteroinferior right atrium (n = 3); tricuspid annulus (n = 1); and near the coronary sinus (n = 1). In 14 patients, atrial tachycardia was located in the left atrium: at the entrance of the right (n = 6) or left (n = 4) superior pulmonary veins; left inferior pulmonary vein (n = 1); inferior left atrium (n = 1); base of left atrial appendage (n = 1); and high lateral left atrium (n = 1).Results.There were no differences in P wave vectors between sites at the right atrial lateral wall versus the right atrial appendage or between sites at the entrance of right versus left superior pulmonary veins. However, analysis of P wave configuration showed that leads aVL and V1were most helpful in distinguishing right atrial from left atrial foci. The sensitivity and specificity of using a positive or biphasic P wave in lead aVL to predict a right atrial focus was 88% and 79%, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of a positive P wave in lead V1in predicting a left atrial focus was 93% and 88%, respectively.Conclusions.1) Analyses of surface P wave configuration proved to be reasonably good in differentiating right atrial from left atrial tachycardia foci. 2) Leads II, III and aVF were helpful in providing clues for differentiating superior from inferior foci

    Variations of the high-level Balmer line spectrum of the helium-strong star Sigma Orionis E

    Using the high-level Balmer lines and continuum, we trace the density structure of two magnetospheric disk segments of the prototypical Bp star sigma Ori E (B2p) as these segments occult portions of the star during the rotational cycle. High-resolution spectra of the Balmer lines >H9 and Balmer edge were obtained on seven nights in January-February 2007 at an average sampling of 0.01 cycles. We measured equivalent width variations due to the star occultations by two disk segments 0.4 cycles apart and constructed differential spectra of the migrations of the corresponding absorptions across the Balmer line profiles. We first estimated the rotational and magnetic obliquity angles. We then simulated the observed Balmer jump variation using the model atmosphere codes synspec/circus and evaluated the disk geometry and gas thermodynamics. We find that the two occultations are caused by two disk segments. The first of these transits quickly, indicating that the segment resides in a range of distances, perhaps 2.5-6R_star, from the star. The second consists of a more slowly moving segment situated closer to the surface and causing two semi-resolved absorbing maxima. During its transit this segment brushes across the star's "lower" limb. Judging from the line visibility up to H23-H24 during the occultations, both disk segments have mean densities near 10^{12} cm^{-3} and are opaque in the lines and continuum. They have semiheights less than 1/2 of a stellar radius, and their temperatures are near 10500K and 12000K, respectively. In all, the disks of Bp stars have a much more complicated geometry than has been anticipated, as evidenced by their (sometimes) non-coplanarity, de-centerness, and from star to star, differences in disk height.Comment: Accepted by Astron.     Representing addition and subtraction : learning the formal conventions

    The study was designed to test the effects of a structured intervention in teaching children to represent addition and subtraction. In a post-test only control group design, 90 five-year-olds experienced the intervention entitled Bi-directional Translation whilst 90 control subjects experienced typical teaching. Post-intervention testing showed some significant differences between the two groups both in terms of being able to effect the addition and subtraction operations and in being able to determine which operation was appropriate. The results suggest that, contrary to historical practices, children's exploration of real world situations should precede practice in arithmetical symbol manipulation

    Mode of onset of torsade de pointes in congenital long QT syndrome

    Objectives.We sought to describe the mode of onset of spontaneous torsade de pointes in the congenital long QT syndrome.Background.Contemporary classifications of the long QT syndrome (LQTS) refer to the congenital LQTS as “adrenergic dependent” and to the acquired LQTS as “pause dependent.” Overlap between these two categories has been recognized, and a subgroup of patients with “idiopathic pause-dependent torsade” has been described. However, it is not known how commonly torsade is preceded by pauses in the congenital LQTS.Methods.We reviewed the electrocardiograms (ECGs) of all our patients with congenital LQTS evaluated for syncope or sudden death (30 patients). Documentation of the onset of torsade de pointes was available for 15 patients. All these patients had “definitive LQTS” by accepted clinical and ECG criteria.Results.Pause-dependent torsade de pointes was clearly documented in 14 of the 15 patients (95% confidence interval 68% to 100%). The cycle length of the pause leading to torsade was 1.3 ± 0.2 times longer than the basic cycle length, and most pauses leading to torsade were unequivocally longer than the preceding basic cycle length (80% of pauses were >80 ms longer than the preceding cycle length).Conclusions.The “long-short” sequence, which has been recognized as a hallmark of torsade de pointes in the acquired LQTS, plays a major role in the genesis of torsade in the congenital LQTS as well. Our findings have important therapeutic implications regarding the use of pacemakers for prevention of torsade in the congenital LQTS

A escolha das representaçÔes pretende, aqui, tornar tambĂ©m evidente o motivo pelo qual, ao multiplicar dois nĂșmeros decimais, o nĂșmero de casas decimais do produto Ă© a soma dos factores. O texto tem por base um trabalho colaborativo desenvolvido ao longo dos Ășltimos anos com professores do 1Âș ciclo do ensino bĂĄsico (alunos com idade entre seis e nove anos), tendo como ponto de partida as discussĂ”es ocorridas ali, as reflexĂ”es subjacentes e as maiores dificuldades sentidas tanto pelos alunos, como pelos prĂłprios professores.     Using Electronic Technology to Improve Clinical Care -- Results from a Before-after Cluster Trial to Evaluate Assessment and Classification of Sick Children According to Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) Protocol in Tanzania.

    Poor adherence to the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) protocol reduces the potential impact on under-five morbidity and mortality. Electronic technology could improve adherence; however there are few studies demonstrating the benefits of such technology in a resource-poor settings. This study estimates the impact of electronic technology on adherence to the IMCI protocols as compared to the current paper-based protocols in Tanzania. In four districts in Tanzania, 18 clinics were randomly selected for inclusion. At each site, observers documented critical parts of the clinical assessment of children aged 2 months to 5 years. The first set of observations occurred during examination of children using paper-based IMCI (pIMCI) and the next set of observations occurred during examination using the electronic IMCI (eIMCI). Children were re-examined by an IMCI expert and the diagnoses were compared. A total of 1221 children (671 paper, 550 electronic) were observed. For all ten critical IMCI items included in both systems, adherence to the protocol was greater for eIMCI than for pIMCI. The proportion assessed under pIMCI ranged from 61% to 98% compared to 92% to 100% under eIMCI (p < 0.05 for each of the ten assessment items). Use of electronic systems improved the completeness of assessment of children with acute illness in Tanzania. With the before-after nature of the design, potential for temporal confounding is the primary limitation. However, the data collection for both phases occurred over a short period (one month) and so temporal confounding was expected to be minimal. The results suggest that the use of electronic IMCI protocols can improve the completeness and consistency of clinical assessments and future studies will examine the long-term health and health systems impact of eIMCI

    Labels direct infants’ attention to commonalities during novel category learning

    Recent studies have provided evidence that labeling can influence the outcome of infants’ visual categorization. However, what exactly happens during learning remains unclear. Using eye-tracking, we examined infants’ attention to object parts during learning. Our analysis of looking behaviors during learning provide insights going beyond merely observing the learning outcome. Both labeling and non-labeling phrases facilitated category formation in 12-month-olds but not 8-month-olds (Experiment 1). Non-linguistic sounds did not produce this effect (Experiment 2). Detailed analyses of infants’ looking patterns during learning revealed that only infants who heard labels exhibited a rapid focus on the object part successive exemplars had in common. Although other linguistic stimuli may also be beneficial for learning, it is therefore concluded that labels have a unique impact on categorization
