Possibilities for pedagogy in Further Education: Harnessing the abundance of literacy
In this report, it is argued that the most salient factor in the contemporary communicative landscape is the sheer abundance and diversity of possibilities for literacy, and that the extent and nature of students' communicative resources is a central issue in education. The text outlines the conceptual underpinnings of the Literacies for Learning in Further Education project in a social view of literacy, and the associated research design, methodology and analytical framework. It elaborates on the notion of the abundance of literacies in students' everyday lives, and on the potential for harnessing these as resources for the enhancement of learning. It provides case studies of changes in practice that have been undertaken by further education staff in order to draw upon students' everyday literacy practices on Travel and Tourism and Multimedia courses. It ends with some of the broad implications for conceptualising learning that arise from researching through the lens of literacy practices
Single Maximal versus Combination Punch Kinematics
The aim of this study was to determine the influence of punch type (Jab, Cross, Lead Hook and Reverse Hook) and punch modality (Single maximal, âIn-synchâ and âOut of synchâ combination) on punch speed and delivery time. Ten competition-standard volunteers performed punches with markers placed on their anatomical landmarks for 3D motion capture with an eight-camera optoelectronic system. Speed and duration between key moments were computed. There were significant differences in contact speed between punch types (F 2,18,84.87 = 105.76, p = 0.001) with Lead and Reverse Hooks developing greater speed than Jab and Cross. There were significant differences in contact speed between punch modalities (F 2,64,102.87 = 23.52, p = 0.001) with the Single maximal (M ± SD: 9.26 ± 2.09 m/s) higher than âOut of synchâ (7.49 ± 2.32 m/s), âIn-synchâ left (8.01 ± 2.35 m/s) or right lead (7.97 ± 2.53 m/s). Delivery times were significantly lower for Jab and Cross than Hook. Times were significantly lower âIn-synchâ than a Single maximal or âOut of synchâ combination mode. It is concluded that a defender may have more evasion-time than previously reported. This research could be of use to performers and coaches when considering training preparations
Analytic Metaphysics versus Naturalized Metaphysics: The Relevance of Applied Ontology
The relevance of analytic metaphysics has come under criticism: Ladyman & Ross, for instance, have suggested do discontinue the field. French & McKenzie have argued in defense of analytic metaphysics that it develops tools that could turn out to be useful for philosophy of physics. In this article, we show first that this heuristic defense of metaphysics can be extended to the scientific field of applied ontology, which uses constructs from analytic metaphysics. Second, we elaborate on a parallel by French & McKenzie between mathematics and metaphysics to show that the whole field of analytic metaphysics, being useful not only for philosophy but also for science, should continue to exist as a largely autonomous field
Discovery of > 200 RR Lyrae Variables in M62: An Oosterhoff I Globular Cluster with a Predominantly Blue HB
We report on the discovery of a large number of RR Lyrae variable stars in
the moderately metal-rich Galactic globular cluster M62 (NGC 6266), which
places it among the top three most RR Lyrae-rich globular clusters known.
Likely members of the cluster in our studied field, from our preliminary number
counts, include about 130 fundamental-mode (RRab) pulsators, with =
0.548 d, and about 75 first-overtone (RRc) pulsators, with = 0.300 d.
The average periods and the position of the RRab variables with well-defined
light curves in the Bailey diagram both suggest that the cluster is of
Oosterhoff type I. However, the morphology of the cluster's horizontal branch
(HB) is strikingly similar to that of the Oosterhoff type II globular cluster
M15 (NGC 7078), with a dominant blue HB component and a very extended blue
tail. Since M15 and M62 differ in metallicity by about one dex, we conclude
that metallicity, at a fixed HB type, is a key parameter determining the
Oosterhoff status of a globular cluster and the position of its variables in

Fluctuations in the current and energy densities around a magnetic flux carrying cosmic string
We calculate the fluctuations in the current and energy densities for the
case of a quantized, minimally coupled, massless, complex scalar field around a
straight and infinitesimally thin cosmic string carrying magnetic flux. At zero
temperature, we evaluate the fluctuations in the current and energy densities
for arbitrary flux and deficit angle. At a finite temperature, we evaluate the
fluctuations in the energy density for the special case wherein the flux is
absent and the deficit angle equals . We find that, quite generically, the
dimensionless ratio of the variance to the mean-squared values of the current
and energy densities are of order unity which suggests that the fluctuations

Cistern barometers, such as those found in most laboratories, consist of a long glass tube containing an inverted column of liquid having an open end in a cistern of the liquid. Students learn that the column of liquid is supported by air pressure and is equal in weight to a column of air of the same diameter
Variable Stars in the Unusual, Metal-Rich Globular Cluster NGC 6388
We have undertaken a search for variable stars in the metal-rich globular
cluster NGC 6388 using time-series BV photometry. Twenty-eight new variables
were found in this survey, increasing the total number of variables found near
NGC 6388 to ~57. A significant number of the variables are RR Lyrae (~14), most
of which are probable cluster members. The periods of the fundamental mode RR
Lyrae are shown to be unusually long compared to metal-rich field stars. The
existence of these long period RRab stars suggests that the horizontal branch
of NGC 6388 is unusually bright. This implies that the metallicity-luminosity
relationship for RR Lyrae stars is not universal if the RR Lyrae in NGC 6388
are indeed metal-rich. We consider the alternative possibility that the stars
in NGC 6388 may span a range in [Fe/H]. Four candidate Population II Cepheids
were also found. If they are members of the cluster, NGC 6388 would be the most
metal-rich globular cluster to contain Population II Cepheids. The mean V
magnitude of the RR Lyrae is found to be 16.85+/-0.05 resulting in a distance
of 9.0 to 10.3 kpc, for a range of assumed values of for RR Lyrae. We
determine the reddening of the cluster to be E(B-V)=0.40+/-0.03 mag, with
differential reddening across the face of the cluster. We discuss the
difficulty in determining the Oosterhoff classification of NGC 6388 and NGC
6441 due to the unusual nature of their RR Lyrae, and address evolutionary
constraints on a recent suggestion that they are of Oosterhoff type II.Comment: 35 pages, 16 figures, emulateapj5/apjfonts style. Astronomical
