    Mesoscale eddies: Hotspots of prokaryotic activity and differential community structure in the ocean

    14 pages, 9 figures, 2 tablesTo investigate the effects of mesoscale eddies on prokaryotic assemblage structure and activity, we sampled two cyclonic eddies (CEs) and two anticyclonic eddies (AEs) in the permanent eddy-field downstream the Canary Islands. The eddy stations were compared with two far-field (FF) stations located also in the Canary Current, but outside the influence of the eddy field. The distribution of prokaryotic abundance (PA), bulk prokaryotic heterotrophic activity (PHA), various indicators of single-cell activity (such as nucleic acid content, proportion of live cells, and fraction of cells actively incorporating leucine), as well as bacterial and archaeal community structure were determined from the surface to 2000 m depth. In the upper epipelagic layer (0-200 m), the effect of eddies on the prokaryotic community was more apparent, as indicated by the higher PA, PHA, fraction of living cells, and percentage of active cells incorporating leucine within eddies than at FF stations. Prokaryotic community composition differed also between eddy and FF stations in the epipelagic layer. In the mesopelagic layer (200-1000 m), there were also significant differences in PA and PHA between eddy and FF stations, although in general, there were no clear differences in community composition or single-cell activity. The effects on prokaryotic activity and community structure were stronger in AE than CE, decreasing with depth in both types of eddies.     En este trabajo vamos a analizar una circunstancia ciertamente poco conocida, breve en el tiempo, pero que alcanza una especial relevancia: el establecimiento de una Compañía de Caballeros dentro del Real Cuerpo de Guardias de Corps. No es desconocido el carácter elitista de las guardias reales durante el siglo XVIII. La cercanía con el Rey podría significar un fulgurante ascenso dentro de la carrera militar o el acceso a relevantes puestos de carácter político. Con la denominación oficial de Segunda Compañía Española de Caballeros Americanos durante el reinado de Carlos IV se abrió la posibilidad de que los fieles vasallos de América, como se establece en el Real Decreto de constitución, pudieran emplearse en el selecto Real Cuerpo de Guardias de Corps. This paper analizes a little-known and short circumstance but it is particularly relevant: The establishment of a Knights’ Company in Real Cuerpo de Guardias de Corps. The Royal Guards are known for their elite carácter. The close relationships with the King could mean a stunning promotion in the military career or the Access to relevant public positions.     Observation and analysis of creation, decay, and regeneration of annular soliton clusters in a lossy cubic-quintic optical medium

    We observe and analyze formation, decay, and subsequent regeneration of ring-shaped clusters of (2+1)-dimensional spatial solitons (filaments) in a medium with the cubic-quintic (focusing-defocusing) self-interaction and strong dissipative nonlinearity. The cluster of filaments, that remains stable over ~17.5 Rayleigh lengths, is produced by the azimuthal modulational instability from a parent ring-shaped beam with embedded vorticity l = 1. In the course of still longer propagation, the stability of the soliton cluster is lost under the action of nonlinear losses. The annular cluster is then spontaneously regenerated due to power transfer from the reservoir provided by the unsplit part of the parent vortex ring. A (secondary) interval of the robust propagation of the regenerated cluster is identified. The experiments use a laser beam (at wavelength 800 nm), built of pulses with temporal duration 150 fs, at the repetition rate of 1 kHz, propagating in a cell filled by liquid carbon disulfide. Numerical calculations, based on a modified nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation which includes the cubic-quintic refractive terms and nonlinear losses, provide results in close agreement with the experimental findings.Comment: To be published in Phys.     Vesicles Shed by Pathological Murine Adipocytes Spread Pathology: Characterization and Functional Role of Insulin Resistant/Hypertrophied Adiposomes

    Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have recently emerged as a relevant way of cell to cell communication, and its analysis has become an indirect approach to assess the cell/tissue of origin status. However, the knowledge about their nature and role on metabolic diseases is still very scarce. We have established an insulin resistant (IR) and two lipid (palmitic/oleic) hypertrophied adipocyte cell models to isolate EVs to perform a protein cargo qualitative and quantitative Sequential Window Acquisition of All Theoretical Mass Spectra (SWATH) analysis by mass spectrometry. Our results show a high proportion of obesity and IR-related proteins in pathological EVs; thus, we propose a panel of potential obese adipose tissue EV-biomarkers. Among those, lipid hypertrophied vesicles are characterized by ceruloplasmin, mimecan, and perilipin 1 adipokines, and those from the IR by the striking presence of the adiposity and IR related transforming growth factor-beta-induced protein ig-h3 (TFGBI). Interestingly, functional assays show that IR and hypertrophied adipocytes induce differentiation/hypertrophy and IR in healthy adipocytes through secreted EVs. Finally, we demonstrate that lipid atrophied adipocytes shed EVs promote macrophage inflammation by stimulating IL-6 and TNFα expression.     Due to the increase in complexity in production operations, and the low delivery times required by the current market in the naval sector, it is necessary to handle CAD / CAE applications that acquire the role of integrators between the design, planning and manufacturing processes In a newly built vessel the amount of information that is handled is very high, being managed entirely in two dimensions until reaching the last phase of the project, prior to manufacturing, where the development of steel in three dimensions is already beginning to be common. Therefore, during the evolution of the project, a 3D representation of the complete ship is not available at any time, forcing numerous modifications to be made once the ship is already built, thus raising the cost of its manufacture and delaying delivery times. Such modifications could be avoided with a 3D model that allows simultaneous visualization of all its components, just as it is when it is already built.Debido al incremento de complejidad en las operaciones de producción, y a los bajos tiempos de entrega que exige el mercado actual del sector naval, es necesario el manejo de aplicaciones CAD/CAE que adquieran el papel de integradoras entre las fases de diseño, la planificación y los procesos de fabricación.     Levels and variables associated with psychological distress during confinement due to the coronavirus pandemic in a community sample of Spanish adults

    Due to the COVID-19 pandemic's consequences and the state of alarm, literature has shown that people worldwide have experienced severe stressors that have been associated with increased prevalence of emotional distress. In this study, we explored psychological distress (depression, anxiety, and somatization symptoms) using an online survey platform in a sample of 1,781 Spanish adults during the confinement due to COVID-19, relationships between distress and sleep problems, affect, pain, sleep, emotional regulation, gender, type of housing, history of psychopathology, and living alone during the confinement, and differences depending on demographic and psychological variables. Results showed that between 25% and 39% of the sample referred to clinically significant levels of distress. In addition, women showed higher levels of distress, negative affect, perception of pain, and cognitive reappraisal and lower levels of emotional suppression and sleep quality than men. A history of psychopathology, being younger, living alone or in a flat was associated with higher distress. Finally, the variables most strongly related to distress were negative and positive affect, levels of pain, sleep quality, and emotional suppression. Our results highlight the important role of emotional suppression, cognitive reappraisal, and loneliness and the impact of being a woman and younger in Spain during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, it would be necessary to provide assessments of distress levels in these population groups and focus psychological preventive and therapeutic online interventions on expressing emotions and preventing loneliness
