Constructing Numerical Semigroups of a Given Genus

Let n_g denote the number of numerical semigroups of genus g. Bras-Amoros conjectured that n_g possesses certain Fibonacci-like properties. Almost all previous attempts at proving this conjecture were based on analyzing the semigroup tree. We offer a new, simpler approach to counting numerical semigroups of a given genus. Our method gives direct constructions of families of numerical semigroups, without referring to the generators or the semigroup tree. In particular, we give an improved asymptotic lower bound for n_g.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables; accepted by Semigroup Foru

Renormalization of Velocity-Changing Dimension-Five Operators in the Heavy-Quark Effective Theory

    Get PDF
We study the renormalization of operators of the type hˉvΓGμνhv{\bar h_{v'}} \Gamma G^{\mu\nu} h_v in the heavy-quark effective theory (HQET). We construct the combinations of such operators that are renormalized multiplicatively, and calculate their velocity-dependent anomalous dimensions at the one-loop order. We then show that the virial theorem of the HQET is not renormalized, and that in the limit of equal velocities the anomalous dimension of the chromo-electric operator vanishes to all orders in perturbation theory. This implies an exact relation between renormalization constants, which may help in a future calculation of the two-loop anomalous dimension of the chromo-magnetic operator.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figur

A Model of Political Campaign Manipulation

    Get PDF
We propose a multidimensional spatial model of political competition where the advertising campaign aims at influencing the weights that voters’ preferences assign to different political issues. The campaign strategies will move the vote of those voters who lack of partisan identification. The equilibrium analysis of the proposed electoral game yields insights into the chances that the ex-ante loser political party has of winning the elections when there is electoral campaign. We show that the ex-ante loser can end up winning the elections even when (1) it has less campaign funds than its opponent and, (2) it has no advantage on any single political issue.Election campaign, political issues, preferences manipulation, positional voting.

The closed primaries versus the top-two primary

    Get PDF
The top-two primary recently approved in states like Washington, California, and Alaska eliminates the closed party primaries and creates instead a single ballot in which the first and second place winners pass to the general election. We compare the electoral consequences of the top-two primary with those of the closed primaries. We present a model where each primary procedure induce a sequential game with three stages: candidate-entry stage, primary election, and general election. We analyze the equilibria of these games and show that the top-two primary contributes to political moderation and may increase the number of swing states.Financial assistance from Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación under project ECO2011-29355 and Junta de Andalucía under project SEJ5980 is gratefully acknowledged

From a pronounced spatial inbalance of water resources in the Valencia Region, intensified by demand, the paper analyses competition for water between irrigated lands and urban-tourist areas. A determining factor is the deficient quality of available water resources. This gives a high strategic value to Tajo-Segura transfer and to the rivers originating in other regions such as Júcar, Turia and Segura, whose use has generated the so-called «water wars» with adjoining regions, especially with Castilla-La Mancha. After a detailed report of the different kinds of competition, the possibilities of establishing (economic) agreements between water for irrigation and water for urban areas is assessed. This study concludes with a section on Land Use Planning that contains proposals to reduce and to monitor urban-tourist supplies

An Innovative Project to Strengthen and Improve the Knowledge Acquisition in the Degree in Chemistry Using e-Learning Tools

Comunicació presentada a EDULEARN2018, 10th International Conference on Education and New Learning Technologies (July 2-4, 2018, Palma, Mallorca, Spain). The subject "Chemistry II (QU910)" is taught at first academic year (second semester) of the Degree in Chemistry at the University Jaume I. Some of its specific and general competencies are selflearning and writing and oral communication, regarding the main chemical concepts: chemical reactions, elements of the periodic table and calculations of the concentrations of the formed products and the remaining reagents in acid/base, complex, precipitation and redox reactions. We have noticed that 65% of the students have not studied any chemistry subjects (or only one) in High School or Professional Training before undertaking the Degree in Chemistry. The present project aims firstly to help these students to overcome their lack of background, secondly to compare the academic results of the students with and without previous contact with chemistry and finally, to establish actions to solve this prejudicial situation. This objective was reached by the implementation of a zero course, a course including the basic content of chemistry taught in the last years of High School, the month before the beginning of the first academic year. After the first year, students having attended chemistry before university obtained only 0.75/10 points more than the others. The Virtual Classroom, the emails and tutorial played an important role in the achievement of this zero-course

Patterns on the numerical duplication by their admissibility degree

We develop the theory of patterns on numerical semigroups in terms of the admissibility degree. We prove that the Arf pattern induces every strongly admissible pattern, and determine all patterns equivalent to the Arf pattern. We study patterns on the numerical duplication SdES \Join^d E when d0d \gg0. We also provide a definition of patterns on rings
