Physicochemical Studies and Biological Activity of Mixed Ligand Complexes Involving Bivalent Transition Metals, 2-Aminomethylthiophenyl-4-Bromosalicylaldehyde Schiff Base and Glycine
The Mixed-ligand complexes of Co(II), Ni(II), Mn(II) and Zn(II) with 2-aminomethylthiophenyl-4-bromosalicylaldehyde Schiff base (ATS) and glycine as a representative example of amino acids have been achieved. These complexes namely [Ni(ATS)(Gly)] (1), [Co(ATS)(Gly)].H2O (3) [Mn(ATS)(Gly)].2H2O (2) and [Zn(ATS)(Gly)] (4) were characterized by elemental, molar conductance, infrared, magnetic moment, and electronic spectra. ATS behaves as mononegatively charged bidentate ligand with coordination through azomethine nitrogen and phenolate oxygen groups while glycine acts as monobasic bidentate ligand is coordinated via amino and ionized carboxylate group after deprotonation. The low molar conductance values suggest the non-electrolytic nature of these complexes. The magnetic and spectral data indicates a square planar geometry for Ni2+ complex, tetrahedral geometry for Zn2+ and octahedral geometry for both Mn2+ and Co2+ complexes. NEW INSIGHT INTO THE MIDDLE EOCENE CALCAREOUS NANNOPLANKTON BIOSTRATIGRAPHY AND PALEOENVIRONMENT FROM FAYOUM AND BENI SUEF AREAS, EGYPT
The present study deals with calcareous nannoplankton paleoenvironmental and biostratigraphic implications as well as the genesis and the stratigraphic significance of an event bed recognized from the middle Eocene Beni Suef Formation in the sections of Gebel Na’alun (Fayoum area) and Gebel Homret Shaibun (Beni Suef area), Egypt. Calcareous nannoplankton biostratigraphy indicates that the Beni Suef Formation in the two areas is synchronous, covering an interval that may be correlated with the calcareous nannoplankton Zone NP17. Paleoenvironmental implications from calcareous nannoplankton suggests deposition of sediments in the Beni Suef Formation under relatively stable, temperate and mesotrophic conditions, with a short interval of eutrophication in the basal part of the Homret Shaibun section
The impact of childhood food allergy on quality of life of the paediatric population in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
BackgroundFood allergy is an allergic reaction to any type of food that differs in its severity and impact on the patient's life as well as on caregivers. AimsTo measure the quality of life in the paediatric population with food allergy at National Gourd Health Affairs Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.Methods The food allergy quality of life-parent form was used in this study. The sample size is 75 participants. An Arabic translated and validated version of both questionnaires, with minor modifications were used. Demographic profile, allergy profile, and symptoms profiles were described as frequencies. Cronbach’s alpha was calculated for each food allergy quality of life domain. Food allergy quality of life domains were described using the average scores of the summed corresponding variables. A two-way MANOVA was carried out.Results The total score for patients aged 0–3, 4–6, and 7–12 are 2.01, 2.56, 2.33, respectively. There was no significant interaction between the independent variables (p=0.123). Age group and gender had no effect on the combined score measuring the quality of life (p=0.061, and 0.465, respectively). The total score for parental concern about food safety is 3.56±1.15 (SD) and the total score for child's concern about food safety is 2.81±1.45 (SD). Total score for these domains general health perceptions, parental emotional impact, general mental health, and family and child's activities are 1.6±0.79, 2.84±1.36, 3.09±1.28, 2.39±1.27, respectively.ConclusionThere were no significant differences between age groups or gender in the overall score. Only minimal differences were observed in (emotional, social and dietary limitation). We highly recommend further studies in the same field to be able to generalize the results in the Saudi paediatric population
Design, synthesis, molecular docking, and molecular dynamic studies of novel quinazoline derivatives as phosphodiesterase 7 inhibitors
Introduction: Phosphodiesterase 7 (PDE7) is a high-affinity cyclic AMP (cAMP)-specific PDE that is expressed in immune and proinflammatory cells. In this work, we explore the possibility that selective small molecule inhibitors of this enzyme family could provide a novel approach to alleviate the inflammation that is associated with many inflammatory diseases.Methods: A series of novel substituted 4-hydrazinoquinazoline derivatives and fused triazoloquinazolines were designed, synthesized, and evaluated in vitro for their PDE7A inhibition activities, in comparison with Theophylline, a non-selective PDE inhibitor, and BRL50481, a selective PDE7A inhibitor. This series of novel quinazoline derivatives were synthesized via multi-step reactions. The reaction sequence began with selective monohydrazinolysis of compounds 2a,b to give 3a,b. Schiff bases 4a-h were synthesized by the reaction of the quinazolylhydrazines 3a,b with various substituted aromatic aldehydes. The reaction of 4a-h with bromine in acetic acid, in turn, gave fused triazoloquinazolines 5a-h. These compounds were characterized by satisfied spectrum analyses mainly including 1HNMR, 13CNMR, and MS together with elemental analyses.Results and discussion: The results of in vitro PDE7A inhibition activity clearly indicated that compounds 4b, 4g, 5c, and 5f exhibited good potency. Molecular docking and molecular dynamic simulation studies further supported our findings and provided the basis of interaction in terms of conventional hydrogen bonds and π-π stacking patterns. The present results lay the groundwork for developing lead compounds with improved phosphodiesterase seven inhibitory activities
Genetic relatedness and virulence potential of Salmonella Schwarzengrund strains with or without an IncFIB-IncFIC(FII) fusion plasmid isolated from food and clinical sources
A total of 55 food and clinical S. Schwarzengrund isolates were assayed for plasmid content, among which an IncFIB-IncFIC(FII) fusion plasmid, conferring streptomycin resistance, was detected in 17 isolates. Among the 17 isolates, 9 were food isolates primarily collected from poultry meat, and 8 clinical isolates collected from stool, urine, and gallbladder. SNP—based phylogenetic analyses showed that the isolates carrying the fusion plasmid formed a subclade indicating the plasmid was acquired and is now maintained by the lineage. Phylogenetic analysis of the plasmid suggested it is derived from avian pathogenic plasmids and might confer an adaptive advantage to the S. Schwarzengrund isolates within birds. IncFIB-IncFIC(FII) fusion plasmids from all food and three clinical isolates were self-conjugative and successfully transferred into E. coli J53 by conjugation. Food and clinical isolates had similar virulome profiles and were able to invade human Caco-2 cells. However, the IncFIB-IncFIC(FII) plasmid did not significantly add to their invasion and persistence potential in human Caco-2 cells
Submarine record of volcanic island construction and collapse in the Lesser Antilles arc: First scientific drilling of submarine volcanic island landslides by IODP Expedition 340
IODP Expedition 340 successfully drilled a series of sites offshore Montserrat, Martinique and Dominica in the Lesser Antilles from March to April 2012. These are among the few drill sites gathered around volcanic islands, and the first scientific drilling of large and likely tsunamigenic volcanic island-arc landslide deposits. These cores provide evidence and tests of previous hypotheses for the composition and origin of those deposits. Sites U1394, U1399, and U1400 that penetrated landslide deposits recovered exclusively seafloor-sediment, comprising mainly turbidites and hemipelagic deposits, and lacked debris avalanche deposits. This supports the concepts that i/ volcanic debris avalanches tend to stop at the slope break, and ii/ widespread and voluminous failures of pre-existing low-gradient seafloor sediment can be triggered by initial emplacement of material from the volcano. Offshore Martinique (U1399 and 1400), the landslide deposits comprised blocks of parallel strata that were tilted or micro-faulted, sometimes separated by intervals of homogenized sediment (intense shearing), while Site U1394 offshore Montserrat penetrated a flat-lying block of intact strata. The most likely mechanism for generating these large-scale seafloor-sediment failures appears to be propagation of a decollement from proximal areas loaded and incised by a volcanic debris avalanche. These results have implications for the magnitude of tsunami generation. Under some conditions, volcanic island landslide deposits comprised of mainly seafloor sediment will tend to form smaller magnitude tsunamis than equivalent volumes of subaerial block-rich mass flows rapidly entering water. Expedition 340 also successfully drilled sites to access the undisturbed record of eruption fallout layers intercalated with marine sediment which provide an outstanding high-resolution dataset to analyze eruption and landslides cycles, improve understanding of magmatic evolution as well as offshore sedimentation processes. Global, regional, and national burden of diabetes from 1990 to 2021, with projections of prevalence to 2050: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021
Background Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, and affects people regardless of country, age group, or sex. Using the most recent evidentiary and analytical framework from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD), we produced location-specific, age-specific, and sex-specific estimates of diabetes prevalence and burden from 1990 to 2021, the proportion of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in 2021, the proportion of the type 2 diabetes burden attributable to selected risk factors, and projections of diabetes prevalence through 2050. Methods Estimates of diabetes prevalence and burden were computed in 204 countries and territories, across 25 age
groups, for males and females separately and combined; these estimates comprised lost years of healthy life, measured in disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs; defined as the sum of years of life lost [YLLs] and years lived with disability [YLDs]). We used the Cause of Death Ensemble model (CODEm) approach to estimate deaths due to diabetes, incorporating 25 666 location-years of data from vital registration and verbal autopsy reports in separate total (including both type 1 and type 2 diabetes) and type-specific models. Other forms of diabetes, including gestational and monogenic diabetes, were not explicitly modelled. Total and type 1 diabetes prevalence was estimated by use of a Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, to analyse 1527 location-years of data from the scientific literature, survey microdata, and insurance claims; type 2 diabetes estimates were computed by subtracting type 1 diabetes from total estimates. Mortality and prevalence estimates, along with standard life expectancy and disability weights, were used to calculate YLLs, YLDs, and DALYs. When appropriate, we extrapolated estimates to a hypothetical population with a standardised age structure to allow comparison in populations with different age structures. We used the comparative risk assessment framework to estimate the risk-attributable type 2 diabetes burden for 16 risk factors falling under risk categories including environmental and occupational factors, tobacco use, high alcohol use, high body-mass index (BMI), dietary factors, and low physical activity. Using a regression framework, we forecast type 1 and type 2 diabetes prevalence through 2050 with Socio-demographic Index (SDI) and high BMI as predictors, respectively.
Findings In 2021, there were 529 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 500–564) people living with diabetes worldwide, and the global age-standardised total diabetes prevalence was 6·1% (5·8–6·5). At the super-region level, the highest age-standardised rates were observed in north Africa and the Middle East (9·3% [8·7–9·9]) and, at the regional level, in Oceania (12·3% [11·5–13·0]). Nationally, Qatar had the world’s highest age-specific prevalence of diabetes, at 76·1% (73·1–79·5) in individuals aged 75–79 years. Total diabetes prevalence—especially among older
adults—primarily reflects type 2 diabetes, which in 2021 accounted for 96·0% (95·1–96·8) of diabetes cases and 95·4% (94·9–95·9) of diabetes DALYs worldwide. In 2021, 52·2% (25·5–71·8) of global type 2 diabetes DALYs were attributable to high BMI. The contribution of high BMI to type 2 diabetes DALYs rose by 24·3% (18·5–30·4) worldwide between 1990 and 2021. By 2050, more than 1·31 billion (1·22–1·39) people are projected to have diabetes, with expected age-standardised total diabetes prevalence rates greater than 10% in two super-regions: 16·8% (16·1–17·6) in north Africa and the Middle East and 11·3% (10·8–11·9) in Latin America and Caribbean. A record of spontaneous subduction initiation in the Izu–Bonin–Mariana arc
The initiation of tectonic plate subduction into the mantle is poorly understood. If subduction is induced by the push of a distant mid-ocean ridge or subducted slab pull, we expect compression and uplift of the overriding plate. In contrast, spontaneous subduction initiation, driven by subsidence of dense lithosphere along faults adjacent to buoyant lithosphere, would result in extension and magmatism. The rock record of subduction initiation is typically obscured by younger deposits, so evaluating these possibilities has proved elusive. Here we analyse the geochemical characteristics of igneous basement rocks and overlying sediments, sampled from the Amami Sankaku Basin in the northwest Philippine Sea. The uppermost basement rocks are areally widespread and supplied via dykes. They are similar in composition and age—as constrained by the biostratigraphy of the overlying sediments—to the 52–48-million-year-old basalts in the adjacent Izu–Bonin–Mariana fore-arc. The geochemical characteristics of the basement lavas indicate that a component of subducted lithosphere was involved in their genesis, and the lavas were derived from mantle source rocks that were more melt-depleted than those tapped at mid-ocean ridges. We propose that the basement lavas formed during the inception of Izu–Bonin–Mariana subduction in a mode consistent with the spontaneous initiation of subduction
