    Endemic Vesical Stones in Sudanese Children Seen at Gezira National Center for Pediatric Surgery

    Objectives: To determine the pattern, demographic features, clinical features, the common types of vesical stones and diagnostic tools accuracy of endemic vesical stone in children. Materials and Methods: In this study the records of 73 patients with endemic vesical stones were reviewed at Gezira National Center For Pediatric Surgery (GNCPS). The data were analyzed for age, sex, locality, clinical features the diagnostic tools, the treatment offered and outcomes. Results:  A total of 73 patients were included in this study, males were 64  (87.7%), < 5 years were  54 cases ( 74%), the majority from rural areas of low socio-economic status.  Conclusion: Endemic vesical stones in children is common in males below  5 years  and low socio-economic status, with UTI like symptoms and penile itching

    Semantic-based decision support for remote care of dementia patients

    This paper investigates the challenges in developing a semantic-based Dementia Care Decision Support System based on the non-intrusive monitoring of the patient's behaviour. Semantic-based approaches are well suited for modelling context-aware scenarios similar to Dementia care systems, where the patient's dynamic behaviour observations (occupants movement, equipment use) need to be analysed against the semantic knowledge about the patient's condition (illness history, medical advice, known symptoms) in an integrated knowledgebase. However, our research findings establish that the ability of semantic technologies to reason upon the complex interrelated events emanating from the behaviour monitoring sensors to infer knowledge assisting medical advice represents a major challenge. We attempt to address this problem by introducing a new approach that relies on propositional calculus modelling to segregate complex events that are amenable for semantic reasoning from events that require pre-processing outside the semantic engine before they can be reasoned upon. The event pre-processing activity also controls the timing of triggering the reasoning process in order to further improve the efficiency of the inference process. Using regression analysis, we evaluate the response-time as the number of monitored patients increases and conclude that the incurred overhead on the response time of the prototype decision support systems remains tolerable

    An Electronically Reconfigurable Patch Antenna Design for Polarization Diversity with Fixed Resonant Frequency

    In this paper, an electronically polarization reconfigurable circular patch antenna with fixed resonant frequency operating at Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) frequency band (2.4-2.48 GHz) is presented. The structure of the proposed design consists of a circular patch as a radiating element fed by coaxial probe, cooperated with four equal-length slits etched on the edge along x-axis and y-axis. A total of four switches was used and embedded across the slits at specific locations, thus controlled the length of the slits. By activating and deactivating the switches (ON and OFF) across the slits, the current on the patch is changed, thus modifying the electric field and polarization of the antenna. Consequently, the polarization excited by the proposed antenna can be switched into three types, either linear polarization, left-hand circular polarization or right-hand circular polarization. This paper proposes a simple approach that able to switch the polarizations and excited at the same operating frequency. Simulated and measured results of ideal case (using copper strip switches) and real case (using PIN diode switches) are compared and presented to demonstrate the performance of the antenna

    Effect of homogenisation conditions on recrystallisation in the Al-Mg-Mn alloy AA5454

    The purpose of the present work is to understand the microstructure development and, particularly, to control the progress of recrystallisation in hot strip in the Al-Mg-Mn alloy AA 5454, which is typically used for the manufacture of structural automotive components. The chemical composition, together with the thermomechanical processing history of this material, has a strong influence on the microstructure of the product and the resulting properties as it is supplied to the customer. Electrical conductivity measurements, thermal analysis and electron microscopy have been carried out to characterise the evolution of precipitation state at various stages in the processing route. The conditions of the homogenisation heat treatment have been varied, and the effect on subsequent recrystallisation after hot rolling has been evaluated in both the as cast and rough rolled condition by optical microscopy techniques. Results indicate that the conditions of homogenisation heat treatment and roughing rolling are critical for the generation of a suitable recrystallised microstructure in AA 5454 hot strip. A new two stage homogenisation practice has been developed to expedite post-rolling recrystallisation in this alloy

    Post-harvest Storage of Guava (Psidium guajava, L, var. Taiwan)

    Guava fruit (var. Taiwan) were stored at room temperature (26°C), 200e and 50 e and the characteristics of the fruits during storage were evaluated. Guava fruit has a post-harvest life of about 1 week during room temperature storage and post-harvest life can be extended by a few days during storage at 20°C. At 2~ eand 200 e, post-harvest life is limited by the occurrence of rots. At~e, bronzing of the guava skin occurs at about 2 weeks of storage. Rots were not evident during storage at 5°e. The average pH, total soluble solids and titratable acidity of guava at harvest was 3.5,5.4°Brix and 62.8 ml O.lNaOH/ 100g respectively. The levels of individual soluble sugars were: fructose 1.60 g/100g, glucose 1.06g/1 OOg and sucrose O. 78g/1 OOg at the commencement of the study. There were significant increases in total soluble solids during storage at all temperatures. Titratable acidity did not change significantly during storage for 10 days at room temperature and 200 e and during storage for 4 weeks at 5° e. There were significant increases in fructose, glucose and total soluble sugars but no significant differences in sucrose levels during storage at room temperature. Significant increase in fructose levels and total soluble sugar levels were also obtained during storage at 200 e and 5°e. The fructose/glucose ratios significantly increased during storage at all temperatures

    Epidemiology of antibiotic resistance in culture-positive hospitalized patients in selected hospitals in Khartoum, Sudan

    Objective: To study the prevelence of antibiotic resistance and the prevalent bacterial isolates in hospitalized patients in Khartoum hospitals. Materials & Methods: A cross-sectional prevalence study was carried out during the period of April–November 2015 in Khartoum; 226 bacterial cultures were included. Identification of isolates using standard biochemical tests and antibiotic susceptibilities were determined using disc diffusion method. Results were interpreted according to the standards of the British society of antimicrobial chemotherapy. Results: Eight bacterial species were isolated: Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus spp., Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas spp., Escherichia coli, Proteus spp., and Acinetobacter spp. S. aureus was the most prevalent, the majority of which were resistant to methicillin/oxacillin (MRSA). Cultures in our study were mainly from urine (36.7%), blood samples (37.2%), and wound cultures (19%). More than 90% of the tested isolates were resistant to cefuroxime; 54% and 73.8% of Gram-positive and Gram-negative isolates, respectively, were resistant to ceftazidime. Furthermore, there was a high meropenem resistance among Gram-negative isolates tested. Multi-resistant Acinetobacter spp. as well as vancomycin-resistant S. aureus was isolated. Gram-negative isolates showed good susceptibilities to aminoglycosides as well as ciprofloxacin. However, the high resistance rate to these antibiotics was observed in Gram-positive isolates in these hospitals. Conclusion: Methicillin-resistant S. aureus was the most prevalent organism. Gramnegative isolates showed good susceptibilities to aminoglycosides and ciprofloxacin. There were high resistance rates to cefuroxime, ceftazidime, and meropenem.
