    Portal hypertension induces a splanchnic and systemic low-grade inflammatory response that could induce the expression of three phenotypes, named ischemia-reperfusion, leukocytic, and angiogenic phenotypes.During the splanchnic expression of these phenotypes, interstitial edema, increased lymph flow, and lymphangiogenesis are produced in the gastrointestinal tract. Associated liver disease increases intestinal bacterial translocation, splanchnic lymph flow, and induces ascites and hepatorenal syndrome. Extrahepatic cholestasis in the rat allows to study the worsening of the portal hypertensive syndrome when associated with chronic liver disease. The splanchnic interstitium, the mesenteric lymphatics, and the peritoneal mesothelium seem to create an inflammatory pathway that could have a key pathophysiological relevance in the production of the portal hypertension syndrome complications. The hypothetical comparison between the ascitic and the amniotic fluids allows for translational investigation. From a phylogenetic point of view, the ancestral mechanisms for amniotic fluid production were essential for animal survival out of the aquatic environment. However, their hypothetical appearance in the cirrhotic patient is considered pathological since ultimately they lead to ascites development. But, the adult human being would take advantage of the potential beneficial effects of this “amniotic-like fluid” to manage the interstitial fluids without adverse effects when chronic liver disease aggravates

    Laponite as carrier for controlled in vitro delivery of dexamethasone in vitreous humor models

    Laponite clay is able to retain dexamethasone by simple physisorption, presumably accomplished by hydrogen bonding formation and/or complexation with sodium counterions, as shown by solid state NMR. The physisorption can be somehow modulated by changing the solvent in the adsorption process. This simple system is able to deliver dexamethasone in a controlled manner to solutions used as models for vitreous humor.     Thermo-fluid study of the upc race-track microtron cooling system

    The cooling system of the race-track microtron (RTM), which is under construction at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), has been simulated by means of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The hydraulic and thermal performance of the system for various operation conditions has been studied. Firstly, the hydraulic model has been validated by comparison with experimental measurements at different flow rates. Then, the cooling fluid temperatures and the pressure losses of the system have been determined and the capacity of the current design to remove the generated heat at nominal power has been confirmed. Finally, the maximum and average wall temperatures and heat transfer coefficients inside the accelerating structure have been calculated. These results have allowed us to localize sections of the cooling system with a low convection due to detached flows where, therefore, a risk of zones of high temperatures exists. An optimization of the cooling circuit with the aim to reduce such high temperature zones has been proposed.Postprint (published version

    New ATLAS9 And MARCS Model Atmosphere Grids for the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE)

    We present a new grid of model photospheres for the SDSS-III/APOGEE survey of stellar populations of the Galaxy, calculated using the ATLAS9 and MARCS codes. New opacity distribution functions were generated to calculate ATLAS9 model photospheres. MARCS models were calculated based on opacity sampling techniques. The metallicity ([M/H]) spans from -5 to 1.5 for ATLAS and -2.5 to 0.5 for MARCS models. There are three main differences with respect to previous ATLAS9 model grids: a new corrected H2O linelist, a wide range of carbon ([C/M]) and alpha element [alpha/M] variations, and solar reference abundances from Asplund et al. 2005. The added range of varying carbon and alpha element abundances also extends the previously calculated MARCS model grids. Altogether 1980 chemical compositions were used for the ATLAS9 grid, and 175 for the MARCS grid. Over 808 thousand ATLAS9 models were computed spanning temperatures from 3500K to 30000K and log g from 0 to 5, where larger temperatures only have high gravities. The MARCS models span from 3500K to 5500K, and log g from 0 to 5.     Urinary transferrin pre-emptively identifies the risk of renal damage posed by subclinical tubular alterations

    Nephrotoxicity is an important limitation to the clinical use of many drugs and contrast media. Drug nephrotoxicity occurs in acute, subacute and chronic manifestations ranging from glomerular, tubular, vascular and immunological phenotypes to acute kidney injury. Pre-emptive risk assessment of drug nephrotoxicity posesman urgent need of precision medicine to optimize pharmacological therapies and interventional procedures involving nephrotoxic products in a preventive and personalized manner. Biomarkers of risk have been identified in animal models, and risk scores have been proposed, whose clinical use is abated by their reduced applicability to specific etiological models or clinical circumstances. However, our present data suggest that the urinary level of transferrin may be indicative of risk of renal damage, where risk is induced by subclinical tubular alterations regardless of etiology. In fact, urinary transferrin pre-emptively correlates with the subsequent renal damage in animal models in which risk has been induced by drugs and toxins affecting the renal tubules (i.e. cisplatin, gentamicin and uranyl nitrate); whereas transferrin shows no relation with the risk posed by a drug affecting renal hemodynamics (i.e. cyclosporine A). Our experiments also show that transferrin increases in the urine in the risk state (i.e. prior to the damage) precisely as a consequence of reduced tubular reabsorption. Finally, urinary transferrin pre-emptively identifies subpopulations of oncological and cardiac patients at risk of nephrotoxicity. In perspective, urinary transferrin might be further explored as a wider biomarker of an important mechanism of predisposition to renal damage induced by insults causing subclinical tubular alterations

    [EN] Agrobiodiversity and adaptability to environmental changes derived from global warming are challenges for the future of agriculture. In this sense, landraces often have high levels of genetic variation, tightly connected with the changing environmental conditions of a territory. The genus Phaseolus, with five domesticated species, is one of the most important sources of proteins, carbohydrates and micronutrients in various countries. This study aimed to compare the adaptation capacity to drought, in the vegetative growth phase, of a commercial cultivar and two landraces traditionally cultivated in the Mediterranean basin of Phaseolus lunatus (Lima bean). Growth and biochemical responses of the analysed genotypes to different water¿deficit treatments were evaluated and compared. In addition, the effectiveness of the voltammetric method for evaluating stress levels in cultivated plants was tested. The studied parameters revealed that P. lunatus is a drought tolerant species, showing similar results for the three cultivars. However, contrary to what was expected from the germination phase results, the commercial variety Peru showed some better responses under water stress conditions.     Aripiprazole as a Candidate Treatment of COVID-19 Identified Through Genomic Analysis

    Background: Antipsychotics modulate expression of inflammatory cytokines and inducible inflammatory enzymes. Elopiprazole (a phenylpiperazine antipsychotic drug in phase 1) has been characterized as a therapeutic drug to treat SARS-CoV-2 infection in a repurposing study. We aim to investigate the potential effects of aripiprazole (an FDA approved phenylpiperazine) on COVID-19-related immunological parameters. Methods: Differential gene expression profiles of non-COVID-19 vs. COVID-19 RNA-Seq samples (CRA002390 project in GSA database) and drug-naïve patients with non-affective psychosis at baseline and after three months of aripiprazole treatment were identified. An integrative transcriptomic analyses of aripiprazole effects on differentially expressed genes in COVID-19 patients was performed. Findings: 82 out the 377 genes (21.7%) with expression significantly altered by aripiprazole have also their expression altered in COVID-19 patients and in 93.9% of these genes their expression is reverted by aripiprazole. The number of common genes with expression altered in both analyses is significantly higher than expected (Fisher?s Exact Test, two tail; p value = 3.2e-11). 11 KEGG pathways were significantly enriched with genes with altered expression both in COVID-19 patients and aripiprazole medicated non-affective psychosis patients (p adj<0.05). The most significant pathways were associated to immune responses and mechanisms of hyperinflammation-driven pathology (i.e.,?inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)? (the most significant pathway with a p adj of 0.00021), ?Th1 and Th2 cell differentiation? and ?B cell receptor signaling pathway?) that have been also associated with COVID19 clinical outcome. Interpretation: This exploratory investigation may provide further support to the notion that a protective effect is exerted by aripiprazole (phenylpiperazine) by modulating the expression of genes that have shown to be altered in COVID-19 patients. Along with many ongoing studies and clinical trials, repurposing available medications could be of use in countering SARS-CoV-2 infection, but require further studies and trials.Funding: The present study was part of a larger prospective longitudinal study, the “First Episode Psychosis Clinical Program 10” (PAFIP10) study.     Estrategias de Afrontamiento Cognitivo, Auto-eficacia y variables laborales. Orientaciones para prevenir el Estrés Docente

    Teachers often face a variety of stressful situations at their work that may come to threaten their psychological well being. The so-called coping strategies are responses to a stressful situation implemented to try to manage or neutralize it. We analyze the relationship between cognitive coping strategies, self-efficacy, and job variables in a sample composed by 413 teachers. The evaluation was conducted through a questionnaire with 3 different stressful situations, as well as items of the Brief COPE, the CERQ, and other items designed to assess cognitive coping. Self-efficacy was evaluated asking the teachers to what extent they feel able to cope with each situation of stress successfully. The job variables evaluated were: type of school, educational level, and usefulness of received training to face this kind of situations. The results show that teachers of public schools use more the strategies of Pessimistic Passivity and Obsessive Self-Reference than those teachers of private schools. Teachers of Infant and Primary Education use more the Rational Planning when they face problems of students’ behavior, and also use less Pessimistic Passivity when they are work overloaded, than teachers of Secondary Education. We also found significant differences in Pessimistic Passivity and Rational Planning according to the level of efficacy perceived. Finally, those who consider more useful their training use fewer strategies like Pessimistic Passivity and Obsessive Self-Reference. The results suggest the importance of adequate the interventions to prevent teachers stress to their educative level of teaching and to the kind of school in which their work. Also the results point out that it is necessary to design trainings of quality for teachers that became useful for their daily work and make them feel with much more efficacy.ResumenLos profesores se enfrentan a menudo a muy diversas situaciones de estrés en su trabajo que pueden llegar a poner en juego su bienestar psicológico. Las denominadas estrategias de afrontamiento son respuestas ante una situación estresante puestas en marcha para tratar de manejarla o neutralizarla.  Se analiza la relación de las estrategias de afrontamiento cognitivo con auto-eficacia y con variables laborales en una muestra de 413 profesores. La evaluación se realizó mediante un cuestionario donde se presentaron tres situaciones estresantes diferentes, junto a ítems del Brief COPE, del CERQ, y otros ítems diseñados para evaluar el afrontamiento cognitivo. La auto-eficacia se evaluó preguntando a los profesores en qué medida se percibían capaces de afrontar cada situación de estrés con éxito. Como variables laborales se evaluaron: titularidad del centro, nivel de enseñanza y utilidad de la formación recibida para afrontar ese tipo de situaciones. Los resultados indican que los profesores de centros públicos utilizan más las estrategias de Pasividad pesimista y Autorreferencia Obsesiva que los de centros privados. Los de Infantil y Primaria emplean más la Planificación Racional ante los problemas de conducta de los alumnos y menos la Pasividad Pesimista ante la sobrecarga de trabajo que los de Secundaria. También aparecen diferencias significativas en Pasividad Pesimista y Planificación racional en función del nivel de percepción de eficacia. Finalmente, quienes encuentran más útil la formación recibida usan menos estrategias como Pasividad Pesimista y Autorrefencia Obsesiva. Estos resultados sugieren la importancia de adecuar las intervenciones para prevenir el estrés al nivel educativo y tipo de centro en que trabajen los docentes, así como la necesidad de diseñar iniciativas formativas de calidad que resulten útiles para su práctica cotidiana y les hagan percibirse significativamente más eficaces. AbstractTeachers often face a variety of stressful situations at their work that may come to threaten their psychological well being.
